In this video I share how I built a queen sized white oak bed frame. Full design credit goes to Foureyes Furniture (their build video linked below). Inspired by their "Moon Fry" bed design, I build a version with a higher backboard and less angled feet. This was one of a couple bed frames I made over the past few months. The dowel joinery has proven to be very strong and the metal hardware makes disassembly and moving this bed frame simple and easy. While not shown, this bed frame has a fifth foot in the middle of the bed (middle of the central support beam). I have also started adding 3mm felt on the side rails and central support to help cushion where the bed slats sit.
Thanks or watching!

What a beautiful bed. A lot of woodworkers who are picking up the hobby get disheartened by not owning a table saw. You showed them that although the work would be a lot easier. There are other ways to get things done. I respect that. I’m my experience I’ve had a head board split because of wood movement. I had used dominos instead of dowels but the same theory applies. I would suggest what I’ve done to fix that issue. Secure it using dados cut from router. Use dowels on the top plank only and left the middle and bottom plank float freely. But hey, if it works. It works. You might not even experience this. But it’s good to know a work around I guess

Thanks! yeah having a table saw would certainly make things easier. Good point about the wood movement - I will monitor it to see how it moves through the seasons. I like the idea of fixing the top plank with dowels and letting the bottom ones slide in a groove (like a sliding dovetail dado). Il incorporate that in the next version!

Good workmanship, good video quality, and good results. Cannot ask for anything else. I get the impression that you would enjoy working with more hand tools. Have your thought about adding some planes or spoke shaves to your tools in the future. A small lottery win should give you all you need. A good woodworker to check out on what you need would be Rob Cosman on which ones to start out with.

Thanks Andrew! I have a small block plane which I use frequently! I have yet to invest in more hand planes (but I plan on it). I really enjoy Cosman's work and his workbench design with back tray and dovetail corners was inspiration for mine. At the time I didn't like the shoulder vise but when I make another bench I will include one. I will keep an eye out for some handtools. I think a spokeshave would have been very handy for this project.

@@calvin.cooper I have a large number of planes. If I could change things I would not have bought so many Lie Nielsen planes even thought IMO they are the best. IF you learn how to sharpen planes like Cosman most planes will serve you. Woodriver would be my top choice because they are not to expensive. Then Lee Valley's Veritas planes are close behind Lie Nielsen in quality. My last advise sir. Keep on woodworking.

The stretches are 60 inches wide but have that middle support so max is 30 inches unsupported.

@@calvin.cooper Cool that you retooled it/replicated it. But you should mention your inspiration. That's a big channel and the woodworking community might give you what for without attribution. Plus, it's a good opportunity to help people understand that they can make their own plans and maybe show people how you can develop your own plan by looking at someone else's designs. Great work btw!
