Do you think the name "Mohammed" would be more likely or less likely to be called back for an interview as compared to a name like "Michael"? I really think it would be less likely in most cases. If "Mohammed" is not a preferred name, why do you think that is? Do you think its about racism? How could that be? Islam represents 1/4th of humanity, it is possibly the most ethnically diverse religion/culture. No ethnic group makes up the majority of Muslim adults living in the US, 41% of whom identify as being white. So is it really about racism or is it about a cultural bias towards Muslim names in a society who favor biblical names? Common sense would favor the later. Going back to what I said earlier. Do you think people named "Jethro" (Country folk) or "Moonbeam" (free spirits) would be preferred over the name "Michael"? Do you think maybe Jethro, Moonbeam, and Tyrone all face the same kind of bigotry? Isn't it more plausible people are just hating on them for the culture where they are from, that's no fault of their own, rather than outward appearance. It's not as if job applications are submitted with a passport photo. The employer has no idea what these people look like. Remember Islam has people of all races, including whites.

An interesting thing about "You have to look at the background of why people are in the United States" and "Asian people do well because they did well in Asia and could emigrate here" is that if you break down Asian immigrants into their origin countries, the importance of background becomes even more apparent. For example most Vietnamese Americans came to the US as migrants as a result of the Vietnamese War (although a lot were also the well-off bourgeoisie feeling from communist, which lessens the discrepancy), and this can be seen as the median income from Vietnamese Americans is significantly less than Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, and many other Asian Americans.

I will admit that I do not know all of the ins and outs of BLM. My impression of BLM is that they believe that the reason that African Americans are suffering in this country is because the country is systemically racist. I disagree with this notion and think it is unhealthy for the black community to tell them that their flaws are not a result of poor choices but systemic oppression. However if I was wrong or misinformed please correct me, I am always looking to learn more.

To not believe in systematic racism is to deny the history of this country. I think I see your problem. You don't want to completely blame the status of blacks in this country on racism because, as it's been sociologically proven, socioeconomic status is the more powerful determining factor when it comes to positive behavioral outcomes. I don't disagree with this. However, as Destiny tried to get across, this is... awfully simplistic. I'm working on my MPH, and something that's hammered down to us on day one is to holistically look at the communities we serve and to avoid myopic viewpoints and strategies when considering that communities problems. Centuries of slavery and decades of Jim Crow have delegated a specific race to the lower echelons of society. Because of this and a history of other discriminatory practices (see: Redlining and Voter Id Laws), race and socioeconomic status are irrevocably tied in this country. Harmful policies that exist today that target poor, urban communities will by in large hurt black communities by association. This is what is we mean by "systematic racism. Maybe there's a better word for it ("proxy discrimination ???"), but, regardless, blacks are hurt because of their association to poverty, which is due to historical racism. There are a number of sources from researches and authors more reputable than me, but one book I highly recommend reading is "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander.

Again, there are no harmful policies that outright target black communities. Any policy that hurts a low-wage, working-class community will most likely by proxy hurt black people. Voting laws are an example. Whether it be in the form of Early-Voting cuts, cuts to Same-Day registration, or Voter ID laws (this is the most contentious), these policies typically hurt poor, black communities by putting more unnecessary barriers to place their ballot.

No answer from the public defender's office, nothing from any law office at all. Didn't he kind of specifically clarify the distinction between applied and transcendent morality? I don't think the distinction is without value and worth clarifying. If we say that someone who threw himself on a grenade to save his comrades committed some kind of extraordinary good, we are acknowledging that while we don't expect everyone to doing a certain act, that act IS a greater good than not doing it. This represents a different notion than saying that because we can't expect everyone to sacrifice themselves to save others, it is not the more moral act.

That is, it's possible to discuss the morality of things not immediately applicable to us. Like, you could be trapped in a meat eating society disincentivising non-participation in that and know what the morals are (just go with me here) while lacking the actual moral courage to perform them. The immediate application is separate from the principle. So don't go talking about the discussion of moral principles being worthless without immediate application -- then when pressed to perform said immediate application, in order to give your theories meaning, turn around and speak about the distinction of application and principle while suddenly believing the conversation didn't become automatically useless right then and there like you first believed.

i am it’s conflating trolls with conservatives. A troll says trans women aren’t really women to piss people off, but a conservative says it because they honestly disagree that they should be considered women. We can argue about that issue, but that doesn’t mean conservatives aren’t acting in good faith. Yup this was an incredibly disappointing "debate." I came across Destiny a week ago or so and liked some of his debates but lost a lot of respect for him after watching this. Destiny was giving ground to and agreeing with a lot of racist bullshit. Destiny clearly has a huge blind spot here as a privileged suburban white kid who grew up with white gamer culture. I'm saying that as another privileged suburban white kid who had to confront that blind spot an (and still am). The biggest gap I noticed is a huge lack of empathy for what it's like to grow up black, even if you're in a privileged socioeconomic class. Quite simply, you're not treated the same as the white kids even if you dress "nicely," talk "professionally," etc. A lot of people are really uncomfortable around any black person, and black people pick up on that. On top of that, if you're a black person in a higher socioeconomic class, then by definition you're going to be a small minority. Being surrounded by people who don't look like you, many of whom are uncomfortable to be around you, is not pleasant or conducive to academic success. You also have a dearth of positive role models in the dominant culture. Oh sure, there are always the exceptions, but the vast majority of the time, blackness in media & culture is associated with poverty, crime, "ghettoness," etc. Then, to make matters worse, your blackness is a mark against you in the dating game and sexual marketplace. Everyone always gets uncomfortable when you bring this up, but yes, the fact that you wouldn't date a black girl is a sign of racism. It doesn't mean you're personally racist in a traditional sense, but the beauty standards and peer pressures that lead one to be averse to dating a black girl stem from a racist culture. People always like to say "well it's just natural to be attracted to your own race" and yet white guys go crazy for Asian girls because culturally they're seen as submissive. For me, reflecting on my attraction (or lack thereof) towards black women was what really made me start to realize I had internalized a lot of racist stereotypes. How Destiny somehow failed to bring up any of this stuff when discussing the hypothetical of "would I be worse off if I grew up in the same socioeconomic class but was black instead" is mind-blowing to me, and I can only conclude that he just hasn't thought that much about what it would be like to be black, or seriously interrogated some of his own racism that he absorbed from white culture.

Answer to kidney problem: for me the answer is in the act. We define the acts of murder and saving. And we see what the act is by first thinking of a non act. If a person needs a kidney to survive what happens if we do nothing, they die. Therefore the act is saving them. And in law you're not forced to save someone. Now if a woman is pregnant and does nothing does the child die or survive, in most cases it would survive so the act isn't saving it because it would have survived, so the act is murder. So by law an abortion would be murder while kidney transplant an act to save someone so they aren't equivalent. So if abortion would be illegal you don't need to worry about someone coming and trying to take your kidney xD.

That idea that a person's struggle might be multi-faceted - the result of their position in society, such as their bio-geographical origins ("race"), their sex, their class status, their physical appearance etc - there's a name for that. It's called intersectionality. So, a poor Black American's class status might intersect with the fact that he or she is Black. Similarly, a poor White American's class status might intersect with the fact that he or she is white. The theory of intersectionality is a very useful one, but the anti-sjws and some sjws, without knowing what it means, have rendered it just another meaningless buzzword.

Late to the party, but - It's not about whether socioeconomic disparity is 'more' or 'less' impactful than racial disparity. It's the fact that racial biases work as *aggravating factors* which can make the kinds of problems that socioeconomic disparity already imposes on the poor as a whole even more damaging and regularly-occurring for minorities. It makes the generational cycle of poverty even *more* near-inescapable than it already inherently is.

With the "Sacrifice 1 person to save X" problem, i feel like the entire point is moot if we don't take into consideration the present and potential value of both sides. I ll take two extremes ends for the example: "A 20 year old prodigy who has just finished something super prestigious in the technology field and has a bright future ahead of himself has the choice to sacrifice himself to save 100 95 year olds living in hospice centers around the world." This one person's VALUE outweighs the 100 95 year olds both in present and potential value. This line of thinking can get really dangerous really fast and would likely be debated forever on what the "Value potentials of a person" is, but there is no logical argument that could be made in saying there isn't a difference in value from person to person.

The more pressured I'd feel, the more likely I would overcome my selfishness and self-sacrifice for a million people. Like if I was being held hostage and overlooking the city of Los Angeles, and my captor told me I had to agree to let him kill me or he'd drop a nuke on the city, and he could easily prove his ability to do so. In that case, I'd probably submit, but maybe due to a feeling of helplessness more than anything. Now if someone texted me saying, "Here's proof of my ability to drop a nuke on the city of L.A. Also, I've left a package on your front doorstep with a gun inside. If I don't have news of your suicide within 72 hours, I will drop a nuke on the city. Get moving." At that point, I wouldn't feel nearly as pressured, and my selfishness would take over. I'm not sure even my own morals would tell me what to do in a situation like that. I'd probably try to notify authorities but by no means would I do it.

Here's what I think is the inherent problem with morals: morals attempt to assign an absolute value to things like "people", "puppies", "pain", "pleasure", etc. But the reality is that the value of these things is constantly in flux and contextual - never absolute. There's no way to definitively answer the question "Is it moral to sacrifice one person for X amount of people." Imagine a post-apocolyptic scenario where the one person is the last man on earth, against a million women who aren't the last women on earth. That man has more value because of the context. Realistically all we can ever hope for in a moral code is this: that it promotes decisions that maximize the total value achieved for all parties involved in any given situation. It's still an impossible task given the amount of variables at play in the universe but at least it isn't naively searching for absolutes that aren't there.

The moral thing to do is to sacrifice yourself to save a higher number of people but it is immoral to expect and pressure people into that moral system. It doesn't really break the moral system it just makes it more realistic by allowing people a neutral choice to not have to do every moral action all the time. It's a logical fallacy to think that because doing something immoral is immoral, not doing something moral is immoral too. Not doing something moral and selfishly protecting your own life is not immoral, however someone taking your life to do something moral is immoral. It's kinda weird maybe for some people but it's still logical.

on Destiny's observation that people agreeing with him on his past views on the allowance of the use of racial slurs being bigoted, im of the mindset that racial slurs are fine so long as you are not using them to denigrate other people based on race. my position on this doesnt change at all when it happens to be to the determent of white people, which im a part of. maybe this isnt significant because the one exception of me doesnt meaningfully effect his position on this, but i dont think everyone who is in favor of the more liberal use of racial slurs are all too emotional and tribal to avoid being hypocritical when it comes to slurs about their race. #NotAll also, to the notion that there are basically no ways to insult a white straight man, speaking as one, id say that bringing up the fact that white straight men slaughtered innumerable amounts of people in their conquests to colonize the world, nearly genocided the Native American population in horrific ways and fucking enslaved a race of people would make me feel like utter dogshit and deeply ashamed to be associated with those monsters who did this due to the color of my skin. i borderline despise my own race for what it's associated with from its past, but even still i dont want people to feel like they cant discuss these facts just because it bothers the fuck out of me. calling me a slave driver, sarcastically calling me "massuh" or calling me the equivalent of a Nazi but against Native Americans would make me feel ashamed of my race, but i wouldnt suggest that anyone avoid saying it to me if they genuinely believed it to be worth expressing. maybe im just specifically sensitive about feeling guilty for things, even things i didnt even do, and very few other white people have a problem being associated with these atrocities, but i think the real difference is that we havnt been consistently denigrated for our past based on race as much as other races have. im not sure that there is much more to this issue specifically than that.

If we had a society where doctors can randomly kill people on the streets because their life can save 2 lives of more, that has a hidden downside. Nobody wants to live in such a society, living in fear. It decreases the quality of life for everybody else. Utilitarianism is often great but sometimes the real world effective pros and cons of different policies and stances are hard to calculate. There's a set of morals if humans were logic machines, but that set of morals often fails in the real world and causes more harm than good. A set of ethics that causes more harm than good in my view is just bad. But also I agree there are things people should do to be moral that we don't do and that makes perfect sense because once again, we are imperfect beings.

Look at it this way, if one person would want to sacrifice himself for a million people that would be narcistic. This is because the person would value himself on the same level as a million lives. But if a person NEEDS to sacrifice himself that is a different scenario, but one cant live without another. These kind of examples are immoral itself as killing a person is immoral by itself.
