White privileges DOES exist. As a white muslim convert I can tell I have seen a big difference since I started wearing the hijab.
@ZenonJack7 жыл бұрын
Marick2009 You changed colour of your skin by wearing hijab? NO? So it is not about "WHITE PRIVILEGE" but solely about lack for certain cultures acceptance.
@Marick20097 жыл бұрын
Zenon2086 Jack Yes it is! Like Dina said you are no longer like the majority, you are no longer invisible! Of course it is not as bad as someone with darker skin but you are treating differently! I traveled with a friend with darker skin and I saw that she was treating different than me! So yes White privileged exists!
@ZenonJack7 жыл бұрын
Marick2009 They treat you differently because they expect you to be less of a radical Muslim in their eyes. That is all. And it is not about being in majority. I am a dark skinned (darker than Dina's husband) partially Persian male living in Poland (population: 99,9% white and like over 90% catholic), I openly admit that I am an atheist and I face almost no negative reactions because of both of these features. Why? Because they don't see me as a great risk for their set of values and not as an immoral, they would easily accept their daughters bonding with someone like me, they would quite easily accept their children becoming quite like me, despite differences.
@Marick20097 жыл бұрын
Zenon2086 Jack well my friend is not religious and dark skin and she was victim of discrimination and she was treated differently! I guess people are not as racist is Poland!
@ZenonJack7 жыл бұрын
Marick2009 Actually you could have faced negative reactions in Poland exactly because you are a Muslim, conservative enough to wear Hijab. And people like your friend but lacking hijab are also treated same way? Maybe you just wish to see people as genuine racists while they are intolerant of Islam, yet they assume you as a white convert might be far less radical even if you wear Hijab. I am not a racist: I think badly of all Muslim women covering themselves, no matter what their skin colour is. :)

People tend to get really offended when talking about white privilege but when they want to make racist comments and jokes I'm too sensitive? As someone that has done trainings on these issues - it's important to realize and stress white privilege is a by product of systemic racism. It's systemic - so much bigger than us. It shouldn't be about guilt it should be holy shit I got this privilege so what can I do to use it FOR GOOD!

White person convert over here. Shout out to yo momz. Since before I became Muslim I have been aware of the shitty difficulties POC deal with-- and had a problem with it. I wasn't AS aware of my privilege until I started wearing hijab out and realized "hey this isn't as hard as I thought", "people aren't glaring at me or harassing me much". Wait a minute-- why? Because even when I wear hijab, I still have white privilege.
@ShakirahIbaad7 жыл бұрын
My whiteness as revert who wears hijab just confuses people further. For some reason they can't tell what race I am, and if they know I'm white; they are just confused as to how someone can be white and Muslim at the same time lol.
@janetjack94727 жыл бұрын
lezlie maarcker And why your whiteness tempers their fears? Because they are racist? Or maybe because they assume white girl is probably mild convert and probably she is quite educated. Is it completely irrational to think so? Maybe that whole WHITE PRIVILEGE is bullshit and you just proved it is about culture? In that case one coming with Islam.

Thanks so much for explaining that point Dina. Speaking from a person who is white, I never thought of it like that. I don't know why, just thanks for opening my mind a bit. Guess just from my own ignorance and maybe not wanting to see it. Or maybe just due to the fact that I haven't lived my life other than living as a white woman. I just don't like how society is and how it has been shaped to see white as the norm when we are all just humans trying to make it in this world. And God created us all. I just asked my son who is 18 living in America and who is of mixed race if he sees white privilege. He said he sees it all the time, and said not from everyone of course but yea he said he sees it. As his mom, that's hard because I want him to be treated as an equal and seen as an equal. But you did an excellent way of explaining it Dina. Because that video had me really thinking. And this has enlightened me. Thanks Dina. And of course I will be voting for you, you don't have to beg. Anything for you Dina :)
@yardleysb52997 жыл бұрын
kimberly bless you, it does exist. But acknowledgement is the first steps for change. If anything it makes other people strive and aspire more, makes us more driven. It comes down to confidence and self belief and knowing that we are all indeed equal in the sight of God. Only difference being by our deeds and actions are we elevated in the sight of God. And that's all that really matters right? Your son is very lucky and blessed to be so self assured and loved.. that is a credit to you! And you are his prime example that not all people are the same. .. sending blessings to you and yours! 😊😊
@ayeshaniazi72177 жыл бұрын
It's always really interesting to see when people don't realize they have the privilege. When I hang out with my friends and the whole group is minorities and one person is white, other white people look at the one white person in confusion, (I guess wondering what's different about them or why they're part of that particular friend group).
@StayHuman20117 жыл бұрын

honestly, I love you for speaking about white privilege and colourism in your videos. I remember you talked about colourism and anti black racism in one of the sid and dina asks a while ago and it was so well put and on point. keep being real! speaking openly about things like racism is so important because young people who experience racism often lack the understanding for it and can't put their finger on why they feel uncomfortable with certain things like flippant remarks or 'jokes'. naming racism, privilege, and oppression gives them the language to understand their own experiences

Even before coming in contact with the europeans, fairer skin was considered more beautiful in asian countries such as japan therefore i don't think you can talk about white privilege, only beauty standard as "white" clearly refer to the race (which they had not encounter back then) 🤔 also many civilisation considered fairer skin more beautiful because tan skin was associated with the working class -> working in fields makes you more exposed to the sun (the case in Europe and in Asian countries) so i feel like white privilege is a concept which should be carefully applied as i feel like it's only relevant in western primarly white countries.... (sorry for my poor english, if you disagree let me know i will gladly discuss it with anyone 😊)

Start paying your attention to things that actually matter. Like Islamic terrorism and the fact that slavery is still a common occurrence in Africa.

Aminah And what is white? I am a partially Persian guy with a dark skin, but Persians are very closely related genetically to Slaves and to Western Europeans. Am I white? Jews are white? Arabs are white? Who is more privilaged: a black guy living in Manhatan or a white dude in some town in Syberia, Russia? Blacks are not offered good jobs because they are black, e.g. in US? Dear white people: nobody is saying that your life isn't hard and physical illness don't discriminate. Prejudice on the basis of sexuality, gender, ability, and age can limit every race's opportunities. Socioeconomic inequality and limited class mobility negatively impact working people of every colour. Our education and health care systems disadvantage every race's youth and rural people of every race largely don't have access to essential resources that our government should guarantee. Nobody is saying that these issues don't exist or that your life is easy When we talk about white privilege, we're not saying that white people don't have problems. We're saying that white people don't have problems purely derived from whiteness. The criminal justice system favours white defendants. White immigrants are far less likely to be mistreated or deported. People with white-sounding names are more likely to be hired and promoted. White women don't struggle with a culture of racial disrespect and fetishisation. The Western standard for physical beauty centres around white features and the face of the media is largely white. Even our history books tell the white man's story, leaving centuries of racial oppression in the footnotes. The average white person won't recognise this as privilege, because these things aren't perks. They're basic rights guaranteed in a way that people of colours rights never were. So ifsomeone tells you that you have white privilege, don't get offended; it's nothing to be ashamed of. It's something to recognise, understand, and use for good. It's what makes you an ally
@RS-xv5qi7 жыл бұрын
LOL white women are fetishised all the time especially blonde hair or pale skin.
@griswoldrust44887 жыл бұрын
These facts are just simply untrue. People are deported or less likely to be allowed in the countries because of the extreme crime rates and poverty rates of the place they came from, they might happen to be a different color, but that has nothing to do with it.
@suleymanthemad11405 жыл бұрын
Most of the things you listed are simply untrue. I'm eastern european and i'm considered white - still i go through extra security check on airports. White women, with typical blonde hair and blue eyes are hugely fetishsized in the middle east, india and pakistan.

I think it would help if people understand the concept of "privilege " if you live in a predominately white country yes perhaps they will be seen as close to the indigenous look as possible, for example in South Africa, white people live in slums and find it very hard to find jobs what shall we call that Black Privilege? Also in Saudi asians get treated like slaves regardless of their shade of colour whereas black /dark skinned arabs are treated with more respect. If a white guy tries to RAP music industry is not so inviting ... do you see where I am going with this?

Just going to raise my hand as one passing male, pale & stale idiot who doesn't give a shit what people look like. So long as you aren't doing anything annoying like wandering down my street in the middle of the night, banging a frying pan and drunkenly singing "we will rock you", I'm honestly not fussed. Some of us exist... in fact, quite a few. We're sorry about the rest.

I think maybe "white privilege" should actually just be "light skin privilege" because like you said, you can "look white" but not actually be of white European descent. I say this because my uncle is 100% Slavic like me but looks very middle eastern (dark hair, olive skin, etc). He has been treated differently because of that even though he is technically "white". So yeah, I think a more accurate term is light skin privilege. Also, when I lived in Korea, I'd often see women (usually older women) carrying umbrellas to shade them from the sun. And I remember asking a Korean friend why they did that (like didn't the want a nice bronzey tan like me? Lol. But my friend explained that fairer skin is seen as more beautiful because way way back it signified that you did not have to work hard labor out in the fields all day but that you were wealthy enough to stay indoors. I have actually learned that this was a commonly held belief in Europe too. So sure fair skin or light skin privilege exists in all cultures but I honestly think it stems back to the whole notion that being fair or white, if you will, in skin tone means that you are wealthy or privileged to not have to do terribly hard work outside. Just my two cents.
