So when installing new valve does the dial have to be in open or closed position?

It doesn't matter if the valve is open or closed. Just make sure the control aligns properly so it fits properly. The control knows position of the valve from the alignment.

Do I have to drain the pipes before I remove the valve

Hello Paolo, Turn the boiler off first. Hopefully you have shut off valves before and after the valve. If not, shut off every valve you see in your system. All of them! We want to avoid draining your system. Be ready to collect water off the valve when you remove it. If you don't have shut off valve then just remove (relieve) some pressure by draining just a little bit off water from the boiler drain. After you replace the valve make sure you add water to the system until it reaches 12-15 lbs of pressure (your feed valve should do it atuomaticlly, Also you might have to bleed air out of your system. Either that or you can look at the instructions for wiring 1311 and for that model 5 is power at all times. And 4 opens when it makes call for heat. And six closes when it opens energizing 6. Therefore your 3 wire. Using a certain type of thermostat for 3 wire.spdt thermostat. So 1 would be always 24 v neutral and 2 24 v hot from the transformer. Refer to wiring instructions.
