that's the packer. higher heel with no curve and a smaller toe box. the rancher is the same as the smoke jumper, just without the vibram 100 lug sole.

My only problem with my Packers is the stitching on the bottom of the sole is not sunk in so it wears out crazy fast. They need to cut a groove around the rim of the sole and put the stitching in that. It's simple to do and makes the stitching last years longer.

Thanks for the info. I agree with you regarding the premature wear with the sole stitching. When I send my boots in for a resole I'm going to change to a Vibram mini-lug.

@@legalsolutions07 I am waiting on a pair of Whites boots called the Stockman. It is similar to the Packer, but is built on the 55 last, which has a little less severe arch on the instep, and has the Vibram mini-lugs. I hope they are everything I have been told they are. They were almost $600 dollars after shipping. $588.99 to be exact. I would have tried to find a pair gently used on Ebay, like you did, but really wasn't sure of the sizing. I sent a tracing of my feet so hopefully after this pair I might get a second pair.

The stitching thru the sole acts more as a peg than a traditional stitch. It doesn’t matter much if the loop ends are intact or not. They’re going thru so much material. They’re also glued and clinch nailed in the arch and at the heel.

The stitching on the bottom of the sole is not meant to stay intact lol. It's stitching.. How would it be possible for stitching on the sole to remain intact?

I have a $580 pair of the Whites packers, and they are amazingly well built boot. They are light years beyond any off the rack boots you can buy. That being said, there are some downsides to the packer. They are a be-YOTCH to break in. Seriously. I've had them for years now, and I still feel like I am breaking them in. With the higher arch, they can make your feet feel like they have been crushed repeatedly. I have buddies that have sworn by their break in method of standing in warm bathwater for an hour, and then wearing them dry. I've not been able to bring myself to doing that though. Seems like a recipe for problems, but who knows? If I had the chance to buy Whites all over again, I would definitely go with a logger style "smokejumper" boot. The packer offers almost zero in the way of traction, which can lead to some slips and falls on the ice. Whenever (or IF) I ever wear out the soles, I will see if they can put a vibram sole on them. And the narrow and angled heel can fatigue your feet if you aren't accustomed to them. Roaming around through rocky terrain can lead to some stressed ankles. Make sure you lace them up snugly to avoid twisted ankles. Overall, you will buy once, cry once. These boots will last a lifetime. But if they don't, you can have them rebuilt and they will be as good as new. Amazing, and well worth the investment.

Thank you for your comment. I agree with you on the break-in period. I haven't broken-in these Packers yet as I don't wear them enough but I won't soak them to quicken the break-in. I have another pair of White's that I'm sending in for a rebuild. I think they were originally a Packer that someone put a Smokejumper fire sole on. I cut the heel down as it was too tall, but even though the sole has plenty of life left the tops are cracking. I wear these a lot and this pair is broken in and they fit like a glove. I'm going to get either a Smokejumper or Ranger lower put on with a rough side out. That's one of the best features of these boots is you can get a full rebuild. Nothing I've ever tried on or worn feels like a pair of White's or Nicks boots. They're both great.

@@legalsolutions07 There is one trick that I have found, and it does work very well. You slip your boots on, lace them snug but not tight. Use a spray bottle and mist the areas of the boot that are tight. Rub the water in, and you will soon see that they will suck up the water very quickly. Keep spraying and massaging the water in. I did mine on the sides of my feet and the top of the foot. Do that until you are confident that the boot leather is damp and saturated, but not squeezing out of the leather. I found stepping into an empty tub contained the overspray. Do squats in order to really expand your feet in the boots. When you feel the boots loosen up, stop and lace your boots up SUPER tight. Resume spraying as needed and flex your feet a lot. Soon the boots will expand, allowing your feet to breathe a little. The thing I noticed right away, is that with the boots placed up super tight like that, they become nearly 200% more comfortable right off the bat!! Wear your boots until the leather begins to dry (an hour or two), and take them off. Repeat if needed. This will ensure that they are form fitted to your feet WITHOUT submerging every part of your boot. This process kept me from just letting the boots collect dust in the closet!! 😁

I have heard that over oiling them winter twice on the inside and outside will help the leather get more pliable and break into your feet.

What about using mink oil, shoe stretcher liquid or baseball glove conditioner in conjunction with a shoe stretcher? Shouldn't that help the leather soften up?

criminy, sell them to a real country boy that will wear them instead of a metro city boy. Whites boots will last as long as you will and are completely able to be rebuilt. these are WORK boots not biker boots.

I have whites that have lasted 25 years in harsh industrial environment before sending in for resoling to Spokane. they make dress boots but those farmer/ranchers will outlast you. Use them of sell them!
