Where does the part on "white slavery" start? What does the sinking of the Squirrel and loss of Gilbert fit into the story of colonialism? Will this be a 22h documentary? Your title is totally misleading.
@dagdathe6 ай бұрын
not sure what's misleading as this is like part 2 of a 20 part video series. we're giving context on England's vision of what the colonies would look like. yes, it will be like 10-11 hours long in total.

22:16 You've misattributed that quotation to Shakespeare. No idea where you got it from but there are no non-fiction texts of which he's the proven author.

indeed lol that's a quote from the Vagabonds Act of 1572 not William Shakespeare. gotta pay more attention when editing the vid ha

I guess I expected more about white slavery in early colonial American history, but this gives a good and informed backdrop. Please note that the Canadian territory is New-Found-Land, with the emphasis on either the first or second word. It is definitely NOT New FINland. Also the proper spelling of the descriptor "ElizaBEthan" is just that, not "ElizabeTHIAN."

The treatment by the English government and crown of English of the poor and petty thieves was terrible. The act of forcibly exporting them to the new colonies of America was disgusting. But they were not really slaves, as in 'chattel slaves.' Most were considered criminals and given sentences of a certain amount of years. Or they were 'indentured servants,' who had to work for their masters, for a limited number of years. Usually 5 to 7 years. Some poor English people, mostly men, actually volunteered to become indentured servants, so they could be transported free, to the colonies. Once they had worked their term, they were free to take up land there. Or if the were a transported convict, they were free, after they had carried out their sentence. Obviously that meant they were on their own to make a living, and most never returned home. The treatment of these people could really vary depending how their masters behaved. Some were beaten and treated very badly and often died. Others fared better. A lot of Irish people, including prisoners of war, were also treated this way. I suppose in a general sense they would be considered slaves.
