The last time I went there a car with two black men stoped next to me, one wanted to drag me into a pickup truck, I had a nine year old child with me. I screamed but nobody stoped. I hid him and pushed him of the pavement and ran away, that is a bedtime story my child would never forget, what about the rapes onthe school girls that was only 8 to 10 years old, even the native women wanted them hanged. What irritates me the most, are these hippocrates coming back to this country, acting as if everything is just great here. You have a truckload of money in the bank, working a very high-end job, and you make as if there are lots of opportunities for everyone. I was a child in the "apartheid" although I did not like the cruelties that went on in that time. It however was much safer in those days for blacks and whites alike. Poverty was not really lessened for the poorest of the poor, the white people was just added to this category. More people will still leave this "murder dungeon" of a country if they just could, but immigration rules of various countries makes it difficult, and if you are not financially "privileged", you are stuck as well. How many skilled whites are sitting in squatter camps, but just because they have the wrong skincollour, they are left to basically die. For 21 years now the other regime are in the chair, and everything just worsened exponentially! Wake up and smell the beans people. You can't just take it from a clip like this to have you believe falsely that her are "quality of life, growing economy, and political stability". I think the biggest problem in South Africa is the British mentality of 'equal rights for all'.. If Afrikaners had their way, South Africa would be far more mixed race/white then 'just black'... I think white people in South Africa have become very disillusioned with their own identity. I think this is a far bigger reason why people are leaving, then simply because of some 'security issue'. I think the moral here is finding self-agency... If you're OK with your identity in all its strengths & weaknesses, then home should be South Africa regardless of other's perception!

Lots of horrid nasty comments I was a product of the apartheid area as I am now 62 years of age but unfortunately I cannot be held responsible for what Verwoerd, deklerk etc did. I do not agree with the sorrows and how the rest of Africa was deprived of a good life BUT you are all now given the equal opportunity to better yourselves and lives where schooling, medical etc etc are offered to all - but if the mindset is as most have commented you have no hope of survival. War proved nothing as the hierachy sat there commanding and millions of innocent lives were lost and most damaged beyond repair. The same is happening the hierachy doing all the damage and the people are left squabbling, murdering, hating and our politicians continue once again to do the damage. Life in Africa will never change overnight and only two decades have gone by, I love this country and its people for whatever they suffer and endure and have hope that one day it will rise again with the rainbow nation in a better frame of mind and the word apartheid will no longer rise on our lips. This is somewhat of a sore subject for me as I was born in England and have lived here most of my life (I lived in France for awhile) however everything about me is pretty much South African as most of my family were either born there lived there or moved there (we originally came from Ireland if you go back far enough) and unfortunately my mom has had neither the money nor the safety to go back and take me which I find very sad but we are saving for it now and hopefully we can return home and not be the outcasts of the country anymore.

You can only realise that South Africa is a good idea once you have lived in the so called western countries, they dont give a fuck about you. US has the most expensive medical care system in the world. The standard of living in EU countries is very high, accomodation alone can take uptp 40% of your earnings. Most who left out of emotions after 1994 to Australia, Canada and others did not survive, some got backrupt and were forced to come back. Went back two years ago to visit my family for the first time in 15 years. So sad to see how much places like Durban have deteriorated. I visited my old house on Berea Road, my friend's house, DPHS & DHS & they are like fortresses, barbed wired with security details. Downtown Durbs is like an urban ghetto, I couldn't visit the museum that I loved as a child. I respect all that still live there & fight for a decent way of life, but I would never move back with my wife & my little girl.

I don't what to comment when someone writes: South Africa was safe and prosperous during the apartheid years. Well, I would just say it is as if someone would claim that Germany was safe and prosperous during the nazi years. Of course it is true! You just had to fit the bill. Both regimes had a lot in common. One of the only difference was in SA, the majority was living in the ghetto while serving a tiny minority. Now, the challenge is to redistribute the same amount of resources enjoyed by a minority to a great majority! It is as if you were enjoying this bottle of wine with your 5 friends and now more guesses are showing up, you find yourself having to accommodate 50 guesses and all want a share of that wine. Meanwhile, you have lost some fingers to serve to your new guesses because those fingers were white and left the country by fear. Of course some idiot will claim it was better when we were only 5 and enjoyed each a full glass! One has only to look at the numbers, somehow same resources, more people to feed, to shelter, to accommodate, to educate etc meanwhile in a traumatic and stressful period of time.. If anything I'm amazed they were able to do what they have done so far. Yet, much is to be done and great leadership is badly needed.

Have lived and worked in London since 1997 in banking. I still own property in SA and go back regularly. Tried to return 2009 and couldn't find a job despite my degree and experience abroad. All the jobs go to "previously disadvantaged" people. Much better weather in SA, but I won't swop London for anything again. I found a job right away on my return. My skills are valued. I sleep sound at night and earn money in a proper currency. Enjoy all the 1st world has to offer too. Cheers
