Sturgeon refers to a family of large, long-lived, and primitive fish species known as the Acipenseridae family. Here are some key points about sturgeon: 1. Appearance: Sturgeon have a distinctive appearance with elongated bodies, scaleless skin, and a shark-like tail. They have bony plates called scutes instead of scales and a cartilaginous skeleton. The family includes various species, such as the Beluga, Russian, and Atlantic sturgeon. 2. Habitat and Distribution: Sturgeon are found in freshwater and saltwater habitats in various parts of the world. They are native to regions like North America, Europe, and Asia, depending on the species. Some species, like the Beluga sturgeon, are known for their long migrations in large river systems. 3. Size and Lifespan: Sturgeon can grow to impressive sizes. Different species have varying sizes, but some can reach lengths of over 10 feet (3 meters) and weigh hundreds of pounds. They are also known for their long lifespans, with some individuals living for well over 100 years. 4. Caviar: Sturgeon are famous for producing prized roe, known as caviar. Caviar is highly valued for its taste and texture. However, overfishing and habitat destruction have led to a decline in sturgeon populations and the need for conservation efforts to protect these species. 5. Conservation Status: Many sturgeon species are considered endangered or critically endangered due to factors such as habitat loss, pollution, and overfishing. Their slow growth, late maturity, and vulnerability to environmental changes make them particularly susceptible to population decline. Sturgeon are fascinating prehistoric fish that play an essential ecological role in freshwater and marine ecosystems. Efforts are being made to protect and conserve these unique species to ensure their survival for future generations (totally not stolen from AI)

That was super cool, Dustin, and I'm not talking just the gorgeous scenery and waterfall. Those sturgeon were a sight to behold. I'm not a fish person myself (but I'll knock someone over to get to the lobster/crab/shrimp first!😁) but even from Ontario, I knew sturgeon were catch and release only in BC. My soon-to-be ex-father-in-law is a huge outdoorsman and conservationist, and was invited out to BC to speak at a conference about it a few years ago. He drove all the way there and back with his wife, the truck and camper, and would do it all again in a heartbeat for the scenery and the fish.

Used to catch massive Sturgeon on the San Francisco Bay and up the Sacramento Delta. Maybe 30 years ago. Back then we kept them and ate them. Sturgeon steaks are very tasty! I believe in California now there are size limits. You cannot take them over a certain size. Because they take so long to mature and be able to reproduce. I think reproductive age is up around 20 years old. One of the biggest we caught was well over 8 feet, and 150 pounds or so. Took two of us to lift it. From what I understand they can get over 20 feet and weigh upwards of several thousand pounds! And yes, they are a challenge to catch. Put up one hell of a fight!
