True nostalgia. I'm 74, and raised in Wisconsin. I've had the following on my playlist for decades: Since I Don't Have You, This I Swear, The Loser (Jack Taylor on the lead), Somewhere Over the Rainbow, When I Fall in Love and I'll Be Seeing You. This group and their music was an extension of WWII's Greatest Generation of people. It will never return and is a tremendous loss.

What a great interview with Jimmy B - is now and always has been one of the classiest and most knowledgeable spokesman for the Skyliners and other classic vocal harmony groups of the '50's and '60's.

Thank you for the post. Jimmy had his wonderful day in the sun along with his fellow singers -- and what a marvelous day it was. Well-deserved. This I Swear and Since I Don't Have You ... two monolithic songs, both of which I love. And Jimmy's lead vocals were superb. And Janet with her earth shattering divine note at the end ... oh, my!

@Mark Ehrlich You left out the best lead voice of them all: Tony Williams of the Platters.
@Steve52344
@Steve52344 4 жыл бұрын
@Mark Ehrlich I understand what you're saying. I grew up and sang in that doo-wop era with a number of NYC groups. None of us attempted Platters' songs because no one even came close to Williams' voice. But...they weren't "adult pop." The Four Aces and Four Lads were "pop." The Platters were a bridge between Tin Pan Alley and R&B with enough elements of doo-wop in their structure and sound to please the ears of the young rock & roll culture. Even though they didn't sing up-tempo R&R, their ballads were rhythmic with a great lead voice and splendid group harmony. The only other lead singers in Williams' class were Homer Dunn of the Rivieras (on Coed) and Ray Pollard of the Wanderers. And then of course, as a soloist, you had Jackie Wilson whose voice was on par with the great Tony Williams.

Jimmy talks about playing at the Apollo Theater and being concerned about how the mostly black audience would receive him and the Skyliners. Back in the '70s I was working in Washington, D.C., and had a black co worker who said he went to see the Skyliners at the Howard Theater in D.C., also a mostly black acts and audience theater at the time. I remember he told me he thought the Skyliners were a black group and how surprised they were when they saw the Skyliners were a white group. My wife and two friendsI saw the Skyliners back on February 10, 2013 when they played in Sebring, Florida, at the Tanglewood Club House. At the end of the show I shook Jimmy's hand and told him that I thought Since I Don't Have You was, IMO, the best Doo Wop song of all times. Never, back in 1959 did I ever think I would one day meet Jimmy to shake his hand 54 years later!

In 1949-1950, bandleader, Ray Anthony, had a vocal group calling themselves, The Skyliners, which consisted of three males and one female. Having a female voice in a group goes way back, long before songwriter, Buck Ram, start managing what would later become, The Platters, in the 1950's. In fact, Buck Ram knew about the 1930's & 40's groups, like The Pied Pipers (w/ Jo Stafford or June Hutton), The Modernaires (w/ Paula Kelly), Donna (Wood) & Her Don Juans, The Quintones (40's group which Buck Ram had some association), The Four Hits & A Miss, The Snowflakes, The G-Noters, etc. etc. which is why he liked The Platters with Zola Taylor.

Yes, I though so too, immediately, and the lip smacking. My dad did that he had COPD, and would smack when he wasn’t wearing his oxygen in his nose.
