Acid Based Disorders - Metabolic Vs Respiratory, Kidney And Lungs, Equations, Primary Disorders

The second of our five video series on Acid-Base Disorders. In this video we dive into understanding the main human buffering system, that of the Bicarbonate-Carbonic Acid System. Where carbonic anhydrase helps potentiate this system. We use this equation to explain the physiology that occurs in the kidneys and lungs to assist in maintaining a normal blood pH. We then define metabolic versus respiratory acidosis versus alkalosis and introduce the changes in the bicarbonate and carbon dioxide levels that lead to these disorders. We again reflect back on the equations to better understand how the physiology drives the acidosis or alkalosis. Lastly, we discuss how quickly the kidneys versus lungs can start to compensate.
