I've been a beekeeper for about 6-7 years, I volunteered for beekeepers with 120 hives all the way to 2000 hives. I've been the local club President for years and traveled all over the region spending thousands on Seminars with the Nation's best beekeepers & researchers. You yellow hive is always a challenge for new beekeepers, especially those who have not worked a great many hives. One piece of advice I can give you is to next time pinch your colony Queen and remove the body and leave the hive alone for at least 4 days. That will remove all her pheromones out of the hive & help to calm them down because they no longer have a queen to protect. 2) when you go to split the hive you only want to take the comb that has honey for the new hive to put into the new colony. All the comb that has larve from the original queen has her genetics & will continue her bad characteristics just like the rest of the colony. That's what you are trying to break the cycle of. So leave them with lots of honey and frames with drawn out comb. Put the bees in the new hives and put the new queen in. The new queen will be released by the colony and should start laying. This way you automatically have a break in the larve production so that will knock down any mite issues and right from the beginning you get a more docile set of genetics from the new queen rather than waiting another month for the bees that were in the larve in the original frames hatching, being raised, maturing, and becoming forage bees and dying 35-40 days later. Just my humble advice for a future issue. One other thing I would suggest, pull out one frame from each hive and separate the extra space equally in the hive. This will give you much more wax extended past the frame face so you can ditch the tiny wax capping cutter and use a knife and just cut off the wax caps. Then you can extract the honey and leave the wax so the bees don't have to work so hard to rebuild all that extra wax you are currently cutting out. It is much faster & easier for you and it saves the bees a TON of energy and allows them to get to work producing honey much more quickly. Good luck with your channel and your bees. I am sure your son is going to love this hobby the rest of his life, if we can keep our bees safe and viable into the future. People can be short sighted in our politics in this country.

Confession time. I grew up with a profound fear/hatred of bees. I’m allergic to them. So naturally I see a bee…the bee dies or I move on. I cannot say it any simpler than that. I found delight in KZbin watching exterminators kill off wasp nests etc. Somehow I wound up on your channel. Over the course of the past few weeks I find myself (for once) pulling for those little suckers. Seeing how you care for them and nurture them made me see a different side to bees in general. I’m not saying I’m gonna go start my own colony etc. I’m not at that point, but where there was once disdain and indifference has now evolved into …compassion. I’m half way through this video and I’m worried that the yellow hive won’t survive the split. IM FRIGGIN WORRIED ABOUT THOSE BEES!!! sigh. What have you done to me? I’ve now finished the video. I am super relived that the yellow hive saga has ended well. I was actually excited.
@Sea-cucumber11512 жыл бұрын
@ mellow dramatic - look at it like this without bees we would probably go extinct ….eventually. We would not have diversity in food, food that you couldn’t pollinate by hand/ manually would die. People would start starving. Grains, and grasses that need pollination would not be able to feed the animals. It would be a slow decline but eventually there would not be enough food to feed the masses. It’s why we must protect our pollinators, even the smallest creatures can change our world with their loss. Without plants and their respiration we wouldn’t have oxygen in exchange for our carbon dioxide. It would be a subtle downhill cascade that would eventually lead to our demise.
@littlemai52862 жыл бұрын
I think you misunderstand why bees are considered important. First of all honeybees are bad in general, Native bees are good. But for a while people thought bees were needed for crops but studies have proven we don't need bees pollination, other insects pollinate as well and some have even more advantages than bees, they just little less effective in actually pollinating.

TY for inviting us on this journey. I am really happy the queens were accepted. It was great the 1000+ other bees in the yellow hive went into the new box and/or the older red box. I truly hope this does result in calmer bees. First, I don't like the idea of wasted life so this solution warmed my soul. Part of my training before medical school was in biology. Usually wild genes are hardier. So keeping these workers, it is hoped that they will survive this colder winter coming. These workers will keep the new brood fed & groomed well. I am truly hoping for the best outcome. It is great to see all of your children are getting a great farming (life oriented) education. They seem to be willing to help and learn. @@susanwehe8270 this!! Honey bees are not endangered. They're agricultural livestock, and their numbers are not threatened in any way. It's wild native bees that are endangered, and honeybees actually put more pressure on those endangered species, which causes them to decline further. Native bee species also pollinate different plants than honeybees, and biodiversity of plants decreases as native species are pushed out, since honeybees are not native to the various areas they are kept, and are therefore not attracted to many native plant species.

It’s crazy to think that simply killing the Queen and separating the bees into different hives made all the difference. As soon as they moved they seemed so much calmer and happier! And it’s so good you didn’t have to cull the bees as well, so kudos for that!
@NWolfsson2 жыл бұрын
It's very plausible that the Yellow Hive was just soaked with stress pheromones, and that it's why they were still aggressive around it while separated parts of the hive were much calmer (in addition to the moved hives having a queen). Indeed a good thing that the hive ultimately just had an overpopulation/stress problem, and wasn't problematic in nature!

I hope that you take this with love and respect that I have for you both. Please get a small Extractor from some place like Mann Lake or another Bee Equipment supplies company. I have been a beekeeper for almost 20 years. Where did you learn to "Squeeze" out the honey? I have never seen anyone do it that way. The extractor that holds 3 frames at a time is about $300. You crank it and it pulls all the honey out of the frames. It goes down into the tank and the tank has a honey gate valve that you can open and strain the honey through a stainless steel sieve, into a 5 gallon food grade bucket, which can also have a valve so that you can fill your jars. The method that you use is probably pretty messy, sticky, and then there is the clean up. There are methods to use natural comb. You can use stainless steel wire and the bees will build their comb around it. You can harvest honey but it may have too much moisture in it, IF it isn't capped by the bees, this uncapped honey will FERMENT. PLEASE, don't let your Baby eat the honey. It might lead to Botulism poisoning. Please read about these things. I hope you will consider this. If you find a mentor, he or she may have extraction equipment. You might be able to use it. We wish you all the best. GOD bless

Love that you persevered and saved the bees. Would love to keep bees but I am not sure I could cope with bees when they swarm.

My poor husband. Every time I watch your channel my One Day list grows. "Hey, babe? What do you think about getting ____ one day?" Lol hoping to start with chickens in the spring and go from there!

We will eventually. Thinking about making an outdoor kitchen for next year to harvest chickens/turkeys and harvest honey in. Then we could put an extractor in there. Problem is we have two different kinds of hives, so the frames wouldn't fit from the horizontal hive.

Nearly every single bee video they post for us, they always get stung by the bees, and yet they still post exciting content to this channel for us to watch. They are legends.

Put the red hive where the yellow one is for a day(remove the yellow one completely). All the bees will end up in the red box. Then move the red box at night to the new location (I am assuming it's far enough away, if it isn't that far there are some tricks to get the bees to re orient to the new location without having them all fly back to the original hive location).
@naomic.51802 жыл бұрын
What are the tricks you talk about? 😜🤩🐝
@robertmabry41722 жыл бұрын
@@naomic.5180 Lock them in the hive for a couple of days and block the entrance with branches so they don't have a direct flight out. When you open it back up they have to do a re orientation flight. You can remove the obstruction after a day or so.

Beekeepers: you need to destroy the hive whoth: nah lets just move the frames with new queens
@kathyk4793 жыл бұрын
Beekeepers... you don't have to destroy your bees. Re queen but take out the queen. Look for a second queen because that does happen in big hives. Destroy all queen cells. Split the hive into 2 or 3 or 4 hives depending on size. Re queen with calm queens like he's doing. Leave new queen in there cage for 2 to 3 days so the hive gets used to new queen sent. By no later then day 3 let new queen out and pray! Feed bees in the process.

What a lot of people don’t consider when dealing with an aggressive hive are the drones. 100% of the drones’ genes come from the queen. An aggressive queen is producing drones that could potentially spread the genes responsible for that aggressive nature to other colonies.
@bobjeff38633 жыл бұрын
@@nztasha true but most drones end up dying out
@barbarahouk19832 жыл бұрын
Well we will just have to "stay tuned" and see. I have observed enough genetics from many species (both plants and animals) to realize the whole reason for SEXUAL Reproduction in nature is for variation. So changing the queen indeed introduces a huge variation in a hive. The other wild genes the drones have might very well be a positive in that the next generation hive would retain the strong immune system characteristics. I think this new queen continues on in this hive til the end of her life then as Jake explained the bees produce queen cells. These queens I understand goes looking for a mate and then returns to her hive. I don't think she mates with drones in her hive. I really need to read more about this.
