@robertmcauslan61914 жыл бұрын
You need more female ducks. Looks like you got two drakes at least, that’s why they are going after the chickens. Drakes are a little, um, amorous this time of year. Muscovy are tree ducks more so than pond ducks.
@kidznkiddz074 жыл бұрын
Great advice. My muscovy kids bathe, but don't swim.
@brendanfallon9714 жыл бұрын
Muscovy ducks won't breed with other breeds of ducks (unlike muscovy drakes), so technically you have 1 duck for 2 drakes. Which isn't enough you need more ducks and then your drakes won't be attacking your hens.
@suicunas48884 жыл бұрын
Yeah its true mascovys don 't like to swim on a pond whole day long. They use the pond to wash themselves they mostly hang out in the long gras around a pond. And they need more females also because the males are very sexual these time of the year. But keep up the good work you do a great job for the animals. 😁
@christinavaldez67374 жыл бұрын
Was about to comment the same thing. A drake can kill a chicken hen if it mates with her. They don’t have the same anatomy.
@evelynwildman12904 жыл бұрын
I was going to write the same post then saw yours. Totally agree. Same thing happened at our house n we had two couples. They have way too many males to female. Gonna hurt that poor duck Amelia. Three males to one female omg! Poor poor duck. Get more females stat. Like at least 6 for the number of drakes u have maybe more. They will really really hurt her

@White House, great project! I'd also suggest to extend the "ramp" of the platform about a foot under the water, or you can make an extension of the ramp with floating STICKS MADE INTO A RAFT! That way the ducks can mount it on foot, otherwise I don't think they can lift from the water unto it. And, I don't think that the mesh will help them for climbing because their flat feet will only slide on it. Wooden bars across the ramp, like you have on the ramp slide to the chicken coop, might do the trick.

We close up our ducks each night in a 6'X8' dog kennel with a tarp fastened on top and plastic mats underneath. We let them have some food in the morning and then turn them out on the lake for the day. Once they are out of the kennel, I hose down the plastic mats to remove the poop and refill water bowls. Then each night we call them in with food and lock them in at night. It took them a few weeks of herding them in with the boat to figure out the routine, but after that I've had success for 7 or so years.

There's a guy on YT that trained his ducks by saying all ducks go to bed and they go inside...and release the quackens and they come outside...
@jessikaye014 жыл бұрын
Haha! I've trained my guineas similar by using mealworms from about 1 week old and on. I did a bunch of research before I purchased them and knew that they wouldn't learn to put themselves away at night so I have trained them with mealworms. Idk if that would work here or not...

Amelia was floating really low in the water, I wonder if that's bc she hasnt needed to preen her feathers with the oil they use to float since she didnt have water before. Can you keep us updated on if she starts floating higher or if its just because shes a chunky girl lol
@patriciatompkins69314 жыл бұрын
My in-laws have a pair of that kind of duck and the male is so big he can not swim! I feel bad for him, he is a swimmer and sits on the sideline and watches all the others swim!!
@ilsehomburg4 жыл бұрын
I definitely think it’s because she had to preen her feathers, my peking duck is twice as chunky and he floats way higher . When one of my ducks was inside with her baby’s for a while she didn’t float anymore either.
@Sunniiiiiiiiii514 жыл бұрын
i thought i was the only one noticing. Her Feathers also do seem to get quite wet, i would assume it's because she didnt preen her feathers. This could also be dangerous as it makes it way more exhausting for her to swim.
@christinahayman35404 жыл бұрын
I was wondering about that as well and was concerned for her.
@si_vis_amari_ama4 жыл бұрын
I have read that Muscovies dont have as much oil as other ducks, and arent as waterproof. It would be nice to get Amelia a female friend of the same breed. They talk a different language from the other ducks.
@smellyolegoat1504 жыл бұрын
This was a fun video. Your pond is gorgeous. I would suggest that you put a low cover on your floating dock. Then fence all around it, and put a gate on it. Since you have the little paddle boat you could feed them on the dock and lock them in there at night. I think if you did that for a couple of weeks they would start sleeping on the dock. Maybe not Amelia, since she can fly, and she wants to nest in the nest boxes. I think she’s going to be very hard to get to stay down there for that reason. Maybe you could mount a nest box for a hen her size on a pole in the pond. It would just be a larger version of a Mandarin Duck nest box. Maybe with a substantial perch just below the opening. Now that you have the pond. Maybe you could get a male for her again. Muscovy Ducks are so wonderful and broody. I bet they would raise lots of babies on that magnificent pond for you all.

But I'm glad you caught Amelia and put her on the raft They havnt had water like that so their oils arnt built up so their feathers get saturated She could have drown. That's probably why she stayed on the raft. I would say build them a house on that raft and pull it to shore in the day. feed them down there. Keep putting them out there but dont force them in the water :) once they start going into the house at night you can move it onto the water
