That is very true that they have no idea how to fight with an air bender. Since the air nomads had been invaded by the fire nation almost 100 years ago, the fire nation never ever experienced with fighting air benders. They have literally zero clue to fight with them. Which is a huge point in this show.
@alarrim295742 жыл бұрын
Even before the genocide they prolly didn’t have much experience fighting airbenders because the airbenders were pacifists

Regarding what you said about how Aang held his own against Zuko, it's even more than just who is stronger, even if Aang was an average airbender he would have won. It comes back to how no one has fought an airbender in 100 years, no matter what martial arts they know they don't know the strategy of an airbender nor what they can actually do with the air. It takes time to size up an opponent like that. And regarding 14:35 i always found it heartbreaking in episode 1 when Katara said while sliding on a penguin "i haven't done this since i was a kid" she is like 15 and Aang says "you still are a kid!" It just shows how kids that grow up in war don't have the option to stay a kid, they have to grow up faster. That's why Katara and Sokka are like that, and Aang grew up in a normal world so he is able to let himself have fun and he isn't completely mature just yet. I loved how they showed this in the show.

Actually, aang didn't just grow up in a normal world he was raised by monks. The monks have isolated themselves from the rest of the world in order to see the bigger picture. In the end, maturing means overcoming the darkness of the world by finding joy. To put out positive energy and, in doing so, you attract it as well.
@brianalambert11922 жыл бұрын
One of the things that I and a lot of people love about this show is the attention to detail. You may have picked up on it, but the bending is all based on real martial arts. It'll be obvious later, and it's not a spoiler, but each bending style is based on a different martial arts method. Waterbending is Tai Chi Earthbending is Hungar Firebending is Northern Shaolin Airbending is Bagua You can really see the Airbending attention in this episode because Bagua translates to Circle Walking. It's a technique based in spiral movements so when you see any airbending, the air or the character's motions are all circular. The goal of the style is to be able to get your hand on the spine of your opponent so you can feel which way they move and keep behind him, which you see Aang do in this episode. Another thing that is cool (and I hate to bring this up but it's the only way to make my point), in the movie that shall not be named, they reworked it so that Firebenders could only bend existing fire, not create their own unless they were a high level master (which defeats the point in my opinion). They did this because Firebenders are the only ones who can create their own element in the show. Problem with this is that it makes the Fire Nation not as threatening. The entire threat of them was that each Firebender was a weapon who could create destruction from their fingertips. The reason I bring this up is that these 20 something creators were smarter than a writer with half a dozen (albeit not so good) movies under his belt. If you think about it, of all the elements presented, fire is the only one which is both actively created and destroyed. You turn a lighter on, it creates fire, you turn it off it goes out. Fire requires an impetus to come into existence and it requires fuel in order to maintain. So of all the elements where it would make sense for them to be able to create it themself, it's fire. And even the show explained in the last episode that Firebending is energy. "The breath becomes energy in the body, the energy extends past your limbs and becomes fire". Never mind in that same sentence you need to breath in order to create fire. Fire needs oxygen And of course there is the multiple cultures that are depicted with as much Asian influence as possible (anybody who says this show is cultural appropriation is idiotic, this is probably more respectful of Asian cultures than most incarnations at the time). My father watched the series with me and he is a major Asian cultural fan, having spent years in Asia himself and growing up on Asian made films and growing up with native Asian friends. He was able to pick up on so many little details that I myself had missed over the years.
@whitenoiseanimereacts2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, lots to say here! I like M Night movie tbh. Signs is amazing and same with The Sixth Sense. I totally love the detail about the martial arts, I had heard that but didn’t know which ones. And I do agree with detail about fire. Not only does it not make more sense, it actually adds way more threat to the fire nation.

Season 1 is definitely more on the childish side and feels more episodic but later seasons really get dark. I would never recommend anyone skip season 1 (not like you will) because having a great understanding of these characters makes their development in later seasons so satisfying and exciting to watch. This is a show that definitely builds as it goes and it is so important to see where all of these characters start so you can appreciate where they end up by the finale. One of the things I really like about the first two episodes of Avatar is the characterization of Zuko, particularly in the first episode we see a lot of Zukos flaws, he’s got a temper, he’s impatient and he’s obsessed with catching the Avatar, but we also get two of Zukos more redeeming qualities. You’re right that giving the “bad guy” what they want as part of an agreement is typically a bad idea but Zuko keeps his word, and secondly Zuko is tenacious, whether he’s leaping off the tower of his ship or climbing up the anchor you can not keep him down. Seriously if he hadn’t managed to grab on to Aangs ankle he would have fallen like 20 to 30 feet onto the solid metal deck of his ship and there is no way he doesn’t at least crack some bones from that, Zuko is determined.

There's this game where Mai Whiteman voiced in called The Legend of Spyro:The Eternal Night, ironically it is alot like ATLA and Dark Spyro is also like the ethereal form Aang has but DS much more violent and terrifying, he has a melee attack which involves flips and other forms of attacks off the ground and at lightning speed, DS is like the size of a small dog but is able to inflict alot of force and hits, he ends off with a slow yet hard smack so yeah and the element he's using for it is Dark Aether/Nether and it's specifically made to deteriorate at the atomic level as it's the element of darkness and the plane of death compared to Aether which is for purity, balance and the plane of life.

I'm always on the fence as to whether Avatar is my favorite show or Clone Wars. If I have to be critical, Avatar is clearly the better project as a whole from beginning to end. It's just better handled, they found their footing very quickly, and it's building up from nothing to create something amazing. But that's the key, Avatar had the luxury of starting from a blank slate compared to Clone Wars which had to overcome so much in order to get where it got. It's starting from a series of movies that people are highly critical of, it's pilot movie was poorly received and admittedly not that good, and it had the challenge of not only standing on it's own but making the prequels work. I still don't like rating them though; Avatar was a groundbreaker when it comes to hand drawn animation for the reason that it proved that the medium or the target audience wasn't an excuse for not trying; that you could still make an epic targeted at children that was well done. If this had been released in live action, guarantee it would have been hailed as the next Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter immediately. Clone Wars on the other hand in some ways had more challenges to overcome because it was starting from such a tough area. Though I do like the fact that both of these shows were underrated gems that slowly grew a devout fan base. Dave Filoni's career has been a slow burn

Actually, I would say that, at least as of now, Aang is the better bender. Iroh is still drilling Zuko on his basic forms whereas (and I don't think this is a spoiler) Airbender only get their tattoos once they've achieved a mastery. But, Aang is also a defensive fighter, where Zuko is very aggressive. So it's interesting to watch a master evader against a journeyman fighter.

I think this piece of aang is missed in the first season but he IS a master of air bending there is a piece lore that shows up in a few episodes down the line and it's that in the air nomad tribe to be considered a master you must create your own technique of airbending (the air scooter) So aang beating zuko this episode is a mix of aang never being in a real fight (so no practical experience) before and anyone in the fire nation never seeing an airbender for a century

I love this show, but to this day I will never understand why Zuko didn't IMMEDIATELY torch the ever loving crap out of aang's leg when he caught him in the air.
@needyverse2 жыл бұрын
After a century without airbenders, most people aren’t prepared to battle one - practically no one has had any experience against them, and even when the Air Nomads were alive, their culture was one of peace (if you noticed Zuko mentioned Aang was raised by monks). A lot of the airbender skillset was based in defensive or meditative maneuvers (or plain fun). Teamed with Aang’s youth, playfulness and humour, many people struggle to understand that mindset. For example, Zuko is very well-trained for battle but he’s never fought an airbender, plus Aang isn’t interested in directly fighting, so a lot of Zuko’s approach doesn’t apply well yet. Aang also isn’t fighting to necessarily win or cause pain, which is alien to many people after a century of the world being ruled in a brutal military fashion.

This is not a spoiler, it's mostly a little bit of background about Aang. He's actually a prodigy in airbending, having mastered the element by the age of twelve (most airbenders become masters at a later age). This is why he's able to stand his ground so well when he fights against (or rather evades) Zuko, who's 16 years old at this time. Aside from being the Avatar, Aang is actually very talented and powerful for his age.
