I can't remember when I saw it, but I was probably about 8 or 9. It was on TV and I was dead scared of ET. Then someone just HAD to give me a life-size ET doll. Scarred for life! Of course I find him funny and cute now. 😂

I saw this movie when I was about 6 or 7 years old in theatres at the time of it’s release together with my parents. (Jeezz I feel old now lol ;) . At the end I literally cried, and my mother asked me: “Why are you crying?” I answered: “ Because I’m sad the movie is over”. Crazy that this happened so long ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday. This is such a wonderful movie, and it never gets old. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are best friends. They actually each have different properties of each other in their movies. For instance, you can see C-3PO and R2-D2 in one of the Raiders movies. In fact, ET’s species is actually in episode one of Star Wars. So the species is actually from the Star Wars universe. Which makes sense now why he said home when he saw Yoda. Because he would recognize the species. Kind of interesting. It’s what happens when you have two friends that mix each other’s properties for fun.

It was also a surprise for Lucas, as he didn't know "Yoda" was going to be in "Steven's Film" and apparently when he saw ET during the screening at ILM, he loved it and put E.T. into the Senate while making PHANTOM MENACE (Spielberg and Lucas' friendship was solidified for life when Lucas gave a screening of STAR WARS for his filmmaker friends and NO ONE liked it, apart from Spielberg who immediately knew STAR WARS was going to be a game-changer for film)

I like how there's no real bad guys in this film. The kids act like kids, and the government does pretty much just their job - to study this most important find in human history, not to treat it with hostility or anything just scientific caution.

One thing I really is like how the man with the keys is almost always shot from a low angle, whether as a faceless villain or a benevolent authority, we are seeing him from a child's perspective; it embodies both the threat and the comfort in such a fundamental way.

This was actually filmed in the same neighborhood and at the same time as Poltergeist. The kids from both movies hung out together on their breaks. Drew Barrymore actually auditioned for the role of Carol Anne and Steven Spielberg thought she’d be better for Gertie.

You’re right about that & there is a reason why they were filmed in the neighborhood. Director Steven Spielberg explained in an interview that he learned people in the suburbs thought the family that loved Nextdoor to their family & the family after that were all pretty much the same family. Director Steven Spielberg wanted to show how families could be different despite being the same neighborhood.

Fun Fact: E.T. is Canon in the star wars universe! In one of the prequels during a senate meeting of all the different planets, you can very faintly see off in the corner, one of the booths is full of little E.T.'s!😊

Fun Fact: Spielberg used real doctors to operate on ET, to make it seem realistic. Gertie's tears in that scene were real, she really hated seeing ET hooked up to all of those machines like that. 😿💖

Fun fact: Originally they wanted to use M&M's but Mars was not interested when they approached them. So they went to Hershey who agreed to product placement for their relatively new Reeses Pieces line which blew up massively in popularity due its appearance in the film. I am sure Mars was sorry they said no. Wanted to add a second fun fact. The Neil Diamond song Heartlight (great song btw) which came out in September 1982s shortly after E.T.'s release appeared heavily inspired by the film to the point where Diamonds record company settled out of court with Universal awarding Universal $25,000. The lyrics seem to clearly reference the film. The repeated line "Turn on your heartlight" along with the section of the lyrics in the song that refers to a young boy flying across the moon does not seem coincidental. Here is that section. "Turn on your heartlight In the middle of a young boy's dream Don't wake me up too soon Gonna take a ride across the moon You and me"

I was 10 when the film came out, and also read the book as well. In the book, ET knew he had a connection with Elliot, so he purposefully shut his system down to save Elliot, who was also very close to dying. He was also afraid of Keys, thinking the keys the man had were teeth taken from other aliens.

You've watched so many different versions of *Peter Pan* lately that I think I should point out that in the scene of E.T.'s apparent death and revival, Spielberg seems explicity to have attempted to create something similar to the scene where Tinker Bell almost dies and is revived (in most versions) by childrens' belief in fairies, which is shown by their clapping. To underline the point, earlier in the movie, he actually shows us a scene of the Mom reading this passage to Gertie from the book, *Peter and Wendy,* and shows Gertie clapping her hands to revive the fairy, with her mom's encouragement. Since it's a movie, he can't have Elliott turn to the audience and beg for applause, so he does the next best thing: right before E.T. revives, he has Elliott say, "I'll believe in you all my life," and then adds, "E.T., I love you" (which is almost exactly what Disney's Peter says to Tink), and as with Tinker Bell, we know he's come back when his light comes back on.

I was little when I first watched this movie. The moment in the beginning, when the government agents drive up in their cars, accompanied by the menacing music really scared me. I felt so bad for Gertie when she was watching the doctors shock E.T. with the defibrillator paddles. Her reaction was very genuine.

I remember the discussion about this but Henry Thomas's reaction May have just been a rumor. I hope not because it was the perfect response. Somebody asked him about a decade ago if he wanted to be in a sequel with ET coming back when Elliott is an adult. The rumor I heard is that Henry's response was "that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard." And I agree there are probably other movies, but off the top of my head I can't think of any movie that would be more ruined by an attempt at a sequel then ET would be. This movie is about as close to perfect as you can get.

My ugly cry scene was when Drew was reacting to E.T. crashing on that gurney. To later find out that literally NO ONE TOLD HER THAT THAT WAS A PUPPET!! She was lead to believe that E.T. was a REAL ALIEN. To this day Drew is still affected by that.

I didn't see it in the comments, but you have to check out the actor that played Elliott's audition tape for this movie! He did it with another person reading from the script while Steven Spielberg was in the room. It was so good that he gave him the part on the spot. That "same vibe" you mentioned was just what it was like then and my favorite thing about the movie. The movie was doubly nostalgic because it is also reminiscent of the movie existing in that time. It is an excellent slice of life at the time, with the toys and other items in the house, the talk of arcade games and whatnot. You could lose yourself in a game or a magazine, or even TV shows and without the distractions of the internet connecting you to the rest of the world. The Star Wars stuff is there because every kid at that time had Star Wars toys. It was really the one movie-related action figure line and toy franchise. A year later there would have been Masters of the Universe and maybe G.I.Joe toys along with it.

Curious fact... John Williams, being the genius that he is, is a very humble man in terms of his work, and in those days it was customary to compose music by adjusting the music bars to the film, frame by frame. but in the last reel of film (16 min. approx.). John Williams tried to adjust the orchestra during the recording sesion simutaniusly to the projection of the film, but after several attempts, it was impossible, and Steven Spielberg recognizing John's genius told him, "forget about the projection, shut it down , and just conduct the orchestra with your heart, I will later edit the film to fit your music". Ladies and gentlemen, you don't see that every day, a movie genius honoring another genius.and those last 16 minutes of flim were not just the must exciting ones of the movie, but the must endearing, and bouth movie and music score earned to maestro John Williams and E.T: The academy award, I love John Williams. (E.T. academy awards: sound, sound editing, visual effects, original score). they coud have recieved more awards but something big happened that year... 'GAHNDI'). Nevertheless, Mr. Williams I salute you, you are a genius and enormous talent composer . may God give you more years to live and recieve all the honors you deserve.

E.T. was the movie that really got me into being a fan of John Williams' music. I bought the sound track to E.T. because the music in the movie touched me and was such a fantastic score. And yes, those final minutes of the movie wouldn't have been the same without that grand score that John Williams' created... excellent!

I think this is one of the best depictions of children and how they interact within a family, especially one going through a divorce. That scene with Elliot talking about their dad going to Mexico with his girlfriend (who was more than likely the reason for the divorce), and Mike being protective of their mom, was so utterly believable. My parents split up when my brother was Mike’s age and he was just the same.

Mom took me to see this when it came out in 1982. I was 3. Cried so hard when ET and Elliot were sick in those tents that she had to take me home. Didn’t get to see how it ended until 3 or 4 years later. First movie I saw all the way through in theaters was “Gremlins” when I was 5. Reese’s Pieces made a lot of money off this film, btw.

I heard Spielberg himself said he wouldn’t ever make a sequel to E.T because it’s one of his most personal movies. I kind of agree though I think they ended it on a great note. (: There is a mini sequel commercial though and it was quite touching! Look up E.T commercial infinity or something along those lines.

This was filmed in Simi-Valley, CA, where Spielberg and Tobe Hooper also shot Poltergeist. I also shot (less notably, of course) a film school project here in my aunt and uncle's house. They lived in one of these homes in a cul de sac right near those hills, not unlike Elliott's. Spielberg liked it cuz it screamed sprawling suburban expansion.

Technically, ET was filmed in "San Fernando Valley" not Simi Valley, although adjacent to each other. The home where Elliott's family is in Tujunga. I've been to the home and it's still there. I know Poltergeist was filmed in Simi but I don't have that bravery to go to the home where it was filmed cause Poltergeist the movie; pretty scary movie lol. Los Angeles is one big movie studio...

The neighborhood bike chase scenes were indeed filmed in The Valley. The film crews actually set up on the lawn of friends of mine to film it. They were told at the time by the crew that the movie was called "A Boy's Life" (the original title). Easter egg in Gremlins...A Boy's Life is the movie playing in town at the theater.

This is, in my opinion, John Williams finest creation and that's some body of work to pick from ! The whole suite from the beginning of the final escape and chase leading to that final rainbow stanza is PERFECT. It never, ever fails to reduce this 50+ year old guy to tears. Wonderful work from the Maestro of Maestros and he knew it because it was one of the rare occasions where Williams actually asked Spielberg to hear what he had composed without the footage. Why ? Because he couldn't match the visuals with the score as per usual but he knew he had something special. Spielberg agreed and once he'd heard it he took the movie back and re-edited the final scene to match the score. Henry Thomas nailed his performance. Do you know the story about his audition ? He wasn't the first choice, another kid was chosen and but whilst he could act, after losing a game of Dungeons & Dragons being played on set during further casting he showed his real colours when he lost. He kicked off and became a real asshole of a kid and the casting director realised the real person behind the act wasn't the sweet innocent 9 year old they wanted and nobody liked him so they axed him. Word reached them about a young boy from Texas called Henry who seemed to be the real deal, a great kid who could also act. Due to time restraints after the first error of judgement with their initial choice for Eliot, Spielberg had him flown out to audition in front of him in person along with the Producers. He was given a general premise and asked to improvise - and it was filmed. The second time I saw *E.T.,* I saw it with a group that included a talented musician and arranger. After it was over, he had nothing to say about the plot, the story, the acting, the special effects, or the directing, but talked endlessly about the excellence of the music, which until then I had hardly noticed as a thing separate from all the other movie-making elements.

They were going to do a sequel in 2020, but then Covid happened... They did make a short, to get people excited about the sequel. It's only 4 minutes and 54 seconds, but I think it's worth watching. The short is called "E.T. A Holiday Reunion".

Steven Spielberg originally worked on a film based on his own childhood about the divorce of his parents which eventually became "E.T." Over 40 years later he finally made his story into "The Fablemans." It's no secret that Spielberg is ultimately optimistic about humanity and E.T. is the one film that best crystalizes that part of his personality. It's a great film about kindness. The family behave like a real family, too, which you don't see in hollywood movies.

If you go back and watch either The Phantom Menance or Attack of the Clones, I can't remember which, you can actually see some of ET's species in the Galactic Senate. Which canonically makes ET apart of Star Wars. Just like you said, Spielberg and Lucas were good friends so ET appeared in star wars as a nod to ET, where Yoda appeared. Which also means when ET saw the kid dressed as Yoda he knew who that was haha

You guys must try the ET ride at Universal studios Orlando! You get to sit on a bike and ET is in your basket! It's the sequel to the movie designed by the director himself! He had to make the ride the sequel because he knew he wouldn't get to make another movie for ET! It's such a great ride with practical effects and its just so magical!

Yes, Spielberg probably just got Lucas to approve the use of Star Wars property for the film (and also for Poltergeist). But more than that, it was a good depiction of how *huge* Star Wars was back then. People had the toys and wore the costumes. It was everywhere. As a kid watching this movie in the theaters I never even batted an eye that this merch would show up. That’s how it was.

A running theory that was indeed confirmed by both Spielberg and George Lucas is that E.T. is a Jedi from Star Wars. If you can zoom in on a Republic scene in Episode 1 the phantom menace, you can see a deligation of E.T.'s in the room. And when you see E.T. reacts to a kid in a yoda costume he says home. It was the connector to the two movies. Plus Spielberg was the co-creator of Star Wars. ETA 1, The dark bearded Doctor I was told was indeed Lucas ETA 2, I was just 3 years old when this movie was in theaters in 1982. So this was a major part of my childhood. Man!!!! I feel ancient!!! Just realized that this came out 40 years ago!!!.

This movie I think is Steven Spielberg’s best film (at least for me personally that is). It made an incredible impact on me when I was a kid, and for a film to be able to impress a young mind like that, it must be something pretty special right? ;) It’s also a movie that I would say is a true 80’s masterpiece, and having grown up in the 80’s I just love it. It hasn’t aged, it’s just timeless. Which is why I think you guys would love Stranger Things: it’s pretty much a love letter to all things 80’s, so if you haven’t already, be sure to check that out ;) Anyways: as usual your reaction was very enjoyable to watch, loved the enthusiasm you guys always bring to your videos. You mentioned if Spielberg ask Star Wars about cameo the Yoda character. In Star Wars 3 I believe there was three ET characters jumping up and down when the Chancellor claimed himself as Emperor. It was short and very quickly but they were there. You noticed that when he saw Yoda he said home.

Goes all the way back to when I was 4 and I remember going on the ride at Universal Studios Florida😍 Fun facts: Harrison Ford had a cameo as Elliot’s school principal but it was deleted. Steven Spielberg is (Gertie) Drew Barrymore’s godfather. The actress who voiced E.T. Also voiced Princess Leia when she she was disguised at the beginning of Return of the Jedi. E.T.’s race had a cameo in one of the Senate scenes of Attack of the Clones.

If memory serves, they asked M&M's to sponsor the film so they could use the candy in those ET scenes, but I think M&M's said no? So Reese's Pieces did it, and they became HUGE because of it. (Not that M&M's aren't plenty recognizable, lol, but still... they could have been ET's candy!)

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is one of the greatest science fiction movies of all time. The story, performance's, music, images, direction, and cinematography was spectacular and phenomenal. It also gives a insightful and articulate representation of emotional resonance, love, faith, hope, humanity, social acceptance, loss, and friendship. It was decent. To this day I still watch it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old. 😍😎💯👍

This is one of only three movies I've ever cried my eyes out to while watching it as a kid. The other two if from my native Denmark, and I've rarely met anyone who hasn't cried while watching it. Masterpiece. Even long before I ever saw the movie, I had this E.T. figure toy, that if you put a battery in it and pushed a button, the tip of its finger would glow like it did in the movie. You might want to check out "D.A.R.Y.L." from 1985. Also "Enemy Mine" from 1985, as well. Both are faves.

in star wars the phantom menace you see E.T.'s species in it, and you see E.T. recognise Yoda, so we can safely say E.T. is from the star wars universe, and we see him use telekenisis etc. so to me it's obvious that E.T. is clearly a jedi using the force.

Actually John Barrymore is Drew Barrymore’s grandfather and his son John Drew Barrymore was her father. Lionel and Ethell are John’s siblings so they are Drew’s Great Uncle and Great Aunt. Lionel, Ethel and John were known as the Royal Family of Brodway. Irving Thalberg coaxed them to do movies and Lionel and Ethal both won Academy awards. Health issues plagued the three Barrymores. Lionel had early onset arthritis and that is why you see him in wheelchairs a lot. Ethel had a heart condition but lived to be 80. John was an alcholic and because of this his acting in the movies was very mediocre. Sorry I tend to ramble on about trivia. Loved you reaction to this movie that was a part of my childhood.

Steven didn't have to get permission for all the Star Wars characters references because he and George Lucas are REAL good friends. George put little E.T. references in the prequel at the scene where a huge conference with all the Alien nations present, and one of the areas had several "E.T.'s as some of the members. Spielberg also put a little R2D2 on the rim of the mother ship in CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. So they both put references to the other's movies in THEIR movie.

I saw the movie at a special preview about 2 weeks or so before it's release. This was a movie that I was highly anticipating as I was so intrigued by the teaser trailer that came out maybe 3 or 4 months before the release. What I find funny thinking back on it was that it was obviously a kid's movie, but it was the ADULTS who really responded to it (I personally saw it easily 6 times when it first came out). I don't know how you two managed to NOT cry when they have that final embrace. I still can't watch that scene without losing it - and I'm a 63 year old man. Shesh. But either ways, the movie was one huge phenomena when it came out and it went to #1 in seemingly no time. I can't believe it's already been 41 years. Seems like yesterday. AND THANK YOU HOLLYWOOD FOR NOT MAKING A SEQUEL TO IT. LEAVE THIS STORY ALONE. IT'S FINE THE WAY IT IS!!!
