There are other versions of the Addams Family in which Gomez and Morticia have had a few problems occur in their marriage. For starters, in an episode of the 60s TV show, Cousin Itt is trying to find a career and they think maybe he could try being a marriage counselor. With that, Gomez and Morticia play a fake couple for him so he can give them advice. During the fake argument, Gomez says something in which Morticia thinks according to the tone of his voice is true. She thinks she is a waste and is a toy to him. Because of this, Morticia doesn’t let Gomez sleep in their bedroom that night and he goes to sleep in the living room. They let it all be in the past the next morning. Another time, which was the most serious, was in the Broadway musical. Morticia notices that she has crow’s feet and fears she is getting old. She asks Gomez if she looks old and Gomez replies with “Not from where I’m standing” after he took a few steps back. He tries to make it a little better by saying at dinner he had a dream. He says that he was a goat trying to impress a female goat. Then he says a crow appeared saying “I will walk on your face!” Gomez he said to the crow to leave them alone, but then the female goat turned into a giant plum in which he took a bite out of and said it “It was nice!” Morticia then says “So I’m a goat who turned into a giant fat plum?!” Morticia also finds out that Gomez had been keep a secret that Wednesday is engaged to be married, thus causing trust issues since Gomez never kept anything from her before. In addition to feeling old, she says she doesn’t want to end up like Grandma who came for the weekend, but is still living in the attic 13 years later smoking weed, unwanted. She even says how even though they both like speaking French, they’ve never been to Paris. Morticia actually points out that she wants to see the sewers there most of all. With the thought of losing Morticia, Gomez thinks about killing himself with a knife, but ghosts of his ancestors stop him and help him know he must win her back. Morticia actually tries to abandon the family due to these terrible feelings she has. Gomez then wins her back with saying how they should live before they die, laugh before they cry, and they do their first tango in a long time. Just like in this movie, Gomez asks “Are you unhappy, my darling?” and Morticia says “Oh yes. Yes! Completely!”

The Addams Family is based on an anthology of one-panel dark humor comic strips created for the New Yorker magazine by Charles Addams. With the exception of Cousin Itt and Thing (and possibly Lurch as well), all the Addamses are actually human. They're just... creepy, cooky, mysterious, spooky, and altogether ooky. Definitely give Addams Family Values a go next. And maybe a few episodes of the old TV show from the 60's.

Them being humans was true in the OG comic but they've been reinvented/more added since the 60s show. Which explains how they survive all of what they do and how they can use magic. The og Addamses meaning fester and Gomez ancestors were undead raised by necromancers hence the superhuman strength and tendency to to recussitate enherited by pugsley and Wednesday too. The grandma is Morticia's mother their bloodline the Frumps are witches. Wednesday has inherited the magic from her mol side however only when she I'll turn 16 will she inherit the Frumps magic of her mother. So basically the mother side are witches who at some point has ancestors who also have been bitten by a vampire and the father's side are superhuman due to necromacy. Due to their ancestors have been turned undead by necromancers in the period of crusades. The butler is an undead made of several dead corpses who have been reanimated, hence how he's slow and can't speak. Cousin it is a monster and the hand is an experiment of the kids. A body part that was reanimated through necromancy which volumes are kept in their vault. If any of this is human to you I think you're wildly off.

Oddly enough, if you think about it, the Addams family is a perfect family! Yes, they have their own peculiarities, but: 1) they do not wish evil to anyone (if not threatened, of course); 2) Gomez and Morticia love each other as rare couples do (in the TV series, it is emphasized by Fester: "Just look at those two lovebirds, still as much in love as on the day they met"); 3) all the family members are ready to protect each other when needed and share interests. Hope you'll watch the 2019 toon version. Cool in its own way

@@jdb101585 That's just it. In the TV series, they are very hospitable, but, considering that their house is stuffed with traps (great fun, huh?), the consequences are... emm... quite eerie for the visitors. However, sometimes they are used intentionally: in the episode describing the story of how Morticia and Gomez met, it is revealed that initially Gomez was to marry her sister Ophelia, whom he immediately disliked, so Fester and Lurch set some traps for her to shoo her off... but did not succeed because they worked on Gomez (accidentally!)

This one and it’s sequel are some of my very favorite family Halloween movies. The Addams Family started off as a comic strip in a magazine in the very early 20th century. It’s never ever been out of the popular consciousness since then. The TV show in the 1960s was amazing partially because the parents were some of the first on television that had an obvious sex life.

Gomez and Morticia are literally the BEST couple in cinema. This is one of my comfort movies since I was little, this and the second one are two of my favourite movies of all. I definitely recommend watching the second one! Fun fact: Fester turning on the light bulb with his mouth is a thing they got from the 60s tv show. I decided to watch the show from the 60s last year and it's SO good! They didn't change much of their personality in the movies. A few small details changed but nothing important. Fun fact 2: During the party scene you can see a blonde woman with braids and flowers on her head.... that's Ophelia, Morticia's older sister. In the 60s show she was betrothed to Gomez (kinda of an arrangement between the families) but when he met Morticia they fell in love immediately and he married her instead. The headless doll Wednesday carries around used to belong to Morticia when she met Gomez.

to add on to fact 2 Ophelia actually marries cousin It in the original and the reason is because when gomez decided he wanted to marry morticia instead he and fester devised a plan to get ophelia to fall in love with cousin It so she would cancel the wedding the reason he couldnt was because there parents had arranged the marriage to unite the familys since they were friends it almost didnt work but when ophelia got to the alter she ended up saying she didnt want to marry gomez and the parents didnt want the wedding to be in vain so gomez married moticia and ophelia married cousin it. also the reason morticia cuts the heads off of the flowers she grows is because gomez is allergic to them this is another reason why he and ophelia werent a good match as she has flowers growing out of her hair.

The Addams Family's net worth is around $2 billion. Gomez keeps investing in weird things he likes. He bought a swamp for ‘scenic value,’ and subsequently discovered massive oil deposits underneath. He purchased a mummified hand at a flea market, later determined to be priceless remains of an Egyptian pharaoh, etc. Also, Morticia has her own lighting in both films, because of course she does!

In the TV show, Gomez was a defense attorney, and he prided himself on his absolutely dismal record of successes; after all, think of how many criminals got put away thanks to him. In other adaptations, he basically picks investments at random, and they almost always soar as soon as he invests in them.

Morticia and Gomez have the most healthy relationship in movie history (at least of that time period) and no one can convince me otherwise. Plus they're devoted to their kids and the rest of their family, including becoming friends with the (now ex?) wife of someone who tried to steal everything from them just because she's friends with cousin It. I've got nostalgia goggles on, but I can say this this movie has held up pretty well for the last two decades :)

I like that it's him bonding with the kids that brings Fester back around subconsciously, also I've been wondering this for a while: since that story Craven told them about finding Fester tangled in a tuna net in Miami turned out to be true, does that imply she knew he really was Fester all along? Especially that line while she's waiting/looking for him: "I never should've used him."

Fun fact, Gomez Addams is one of the top 10 wealthiest fictional characters in all of literature. His investments are all unorthodox, purchases that should never turn a profit, yet Gomez Addams turns them to gold. He purchased a swamp that no one wanted and discovered an untapped oil reservoir. He owns his own crocodile farm called Crocodiles Unlimited. Despite his seemingly aloof personality, Gomez is one of the smartest business investors in literary history.

Family goals! the Addams family were designed to be an opposing fold to the "typical" American family. Like the father that is unemotional and not hands on with the kids. The wife that is demur and complacent mother. The kids are like the son who is into sports and all-around American boy. The princess daughter and the rough and stupid brother. The rude and bossy mother-in-law.

An example of how the Addamses really are the best family ever: in the original version of the script, 'Fester' really was just some random thug who looked a lot like him, and the family ended up liking him and his weird murderous ways so much, they basically adopted him as the new Fester. It ended up being changed since the cast of the movie were upset and felt it wasn't fair to the real Fester who might have tragically died to be 'replaced', so it was rewritten to be the real Fester all along. It's definitely a better ending, but how nice is it that the Addams Family would happily accept a strange, murderous, abused person as one of their own without any hesitation? Doesn't matter if you're not a blood relative, you can still be part of the family.

5:10 You can find Charles Addams's description of each other characters that he wrote out for the tv show - he draw them as single frame cartoons for the New Yorker (or the New York Times, I forget) and then when they turned it into a tv show in the 60s they asked him to come up with the names (got the inspiration for Morticia when he came across a list of morticians in the phone book). The names are Lurch - the butler Thing - the hand Gomez - the father Morticia - the mother Wednesday - the daughter Pugsley - the son Uncle Fester - the uncle (though in the 60s show he was Morticia's uncle, her maiden name was Frump, and her mother was played by the original Wicked Witch of the West) Grandmama - here she's Morticia's mother, in the tv show she was Gomez's mother, they joked about it in the 2009 musical, 'My mother I thought she was your mother!'

I wount repeat what others have said about the tv show (black and white. Set earlier i.e. wensday is younger) but the fun fact about the black and white show : to create the perfect scarry grey they painted the addams house pink. Which was also only used for very wealthy familys as at this pink used to be difficult to make the same shade (like orange and purples) therefore being more expensive! I also believe the tv show house is a museum now. As for the addams family values please oh please! I did not know you didnt know this was a thing but i grew up on these movies and quotes them often. I didnt grow up on Munsters (the Frankenstein/vampire/werewolf family) but i wouldnt mind seeing an episode reaction to them as they are considered tv (more like fan) rivals with addams family.

Idk if someone else said it in the comments, but The Addams Family started as a comic strip in the 1930’s created by Charles Addams, and it was very popular in the 30’s and 40’s. In the 1960’s they decided to make a tv show based on the comic strips, which is where the Addams Family as everyone knows it originated from, and created many of the jokes and characteristics used in the 90’s movies. This is also where the iconic Addams Family theme came from. After the second 90’s Addams Family movie, Raul Julia (Gomez) passed away, cutting off any possibility of a third film with the same cast. A few made for TV movies were made with different casts (Tim Curry actually played Gomez in one), and there were cartoons as well. Most recently, the Addams’ have gotten two animated movies (which aren’t too good imo), and a series about Wednesday Addams is supposed to come out on Netflix soon. Just the fact that The Addams Family is so iconic that it has last for 90 years just says it all. It’s such a fun series and concept.

The best thing about the modern Addams Family movies is that they're as good as the original sitcom. The man who played Gomez (John Astin) was very hard to live up to, for anyone. Raul Julia did as well as anyone could, and the rest of the cast contributed extremely well, to make the whole production work really well. I was surprised how well Christopher Lloyd did, because the original Fester was cast much differently. But it worked. If you want to see the originals, in B&W (unnecessarily, color was common then), KZbin had a dedicated, live, Addams Family channel, last I looked.

1:12 - The Addams Family originated as a comic by a guy named Charles Addams. It was adapted into a sitcom in the 60s, then a short-lived cartoon, then into this movie, then they got another short-lived cartoon, a sequel to the movie, and then an animated movie a year or two ago. Now there's a spin-off series featuring Wednesday. 4:56 - You're confusing The Addams' for The Munsters. An easy mistake to make. 7:17 - Christopher Lloyd. 10:34 - They're human. They're just...creepy. Kookie. Mysterious. Spooky. You know, just sorta...all together 'ooky.' 21:30 - If you like this, wait until you see the play in the sequel.
