Fun fact: The comic is supposed to play as an absolute reverse to the typical suburban family of the time. Which is why Morticia and Gomez actually interact with their children and are deeply interested in their day to day lives. Instead of the children being an accessory/burden to the parents and seen but not heard.

Certified therapists have remarked that Gomez and Morticia are the ultimate married couple goals. It becomes even more clear how awesome they are as parents in the next film, supporting their kids even when they aren’t happy with certain things. That will make more sense after you watch the second film. For me they are the top tier perfect pair and no other couple, fictional or otherwise, beats them.

Fun thing about the Morticia dress... The wearer literally had to be sewn into it. This absolute form-fitting nature resulted in some very scene-specific poses. if you had to sit, you were always sitting. If you had to to be upright, you were always upright. So imagine it, in scenes where she had to be standing and/or walking, she could not sit down and the best rest she could hope for on breaks was to be propped up against a padded plank. Glamour has it's cost.

fun fact: Morticia’s lighting, specifically around her eyes, was inspired by Bela Lugosi’s Dracula from 1931. When I worked at Paramount, I was in charge of the quarterly financial reporting for Addams Family and the sequel. Even before DVD and streaming, they were quite profitable. Lady Colyton, the second wife and former lawyer of Charles Addams, who conned him into signing over his cartoons’ rights to her, used to call me up several times a year when she was going on vacation to give me her contact information in case I needed to get ahold of her…which was really funny to all of us in my department, because never was there ever any kind of need to contact any client that way. Anyway. On one occasion my boss talked to her, and didn’t refer to her as “Lady” Colyton, and she quickly reminded him that “She was a Lady, and would be addressed as such.” 😆 But in all fairness, overall she was a really nice, considerate woman, and I got a kick out of talking to her.

The tv series, in turn, was based on a comic strip by Charles Addams. The films remain true to the essence of the original, and all things Addams Family are just absolutely iconic, in large part due to the deep love and affection between the family members that is incredibly healthy and supportive and accepting of all of their quirkiness and kookiness.

The neat part about the Addams family is that they're an amazing family and Gomez and Morticia are basically the best parents - they're madly (in multiple ways) in love with each other and Gomez wasn't kidding when he said he'd die or kill for Morticia, they share each other's kinks and likely invented a few whole new ones so they're clearly still romantic/passionate, they genuinely care about their kids and actively encourage their educations and pursuits/hobbies (no matter how dull parts might be, like sitting through a kids' recital), they have a pretty substantial social circle (of shall we say "interesting characters" in their own right) and are socially active, and they maintain a connection to their past/ancestry but don't let that determine their present or future.

There's another actor in this movie you might have recognized. Carel Struycken, who played Lurch here, was Grandpa Flick in Doctor Sleep. The reason the Thing effects work well is because it was played by Christopher Hart, a well known magician. Christina Ricci was not the original Wednesday. Lisa Loring, who died recently, played her in the 60's TV show. It says a lot about the talent of Raul Julia that they attempted a third Addams Family movie in 1998 with Tim Curry in the role, and not even he could pull it off.

The Addams Family started as a print cartoon by Charles Addams, which appeared mostly in The New Yorker magazine between the 1930's and 1980's. In fact, the opening scene of this film came directly from one of his cartoons, with the family up on the roof preparing to pour boiling oil down on the carolers. Although Addams' strip was always intended as a funny cartoon, it was much more macabre with darker comedy. The lighter take came about with the 1964 TV sitcom. In fact, the characters didn't even have names, until the series, when Addams had to come up with them specifically at that point.

The Addams family began as a series of one-panel cartoons drawn by Charles Addams for the New Yorker magazine. The house was inspired by the same Edward Hopper 1925 painting, House by the Railroad (of a still-standing house in Haverstraw, NY) that inspired the house in Pyscho. The cartoon did not name the characters. The cartoon series inspired the tv sitcom, which gave the characters the names, and this in turn inspired this movie series, plus a bunch of other spinoffs. 12:49 “I bet this movie was so much fun to film!” Nope: It was decided that Morticia should have eyes which slanted upwards at the sides, an effect which was achieved by attaching an elastic strap to the back of Angelica's head via fabric tabs glued at her temples, which pulled the corners of her eyes upwards. A second strap was added to balance the appearance of the lower part of her face with the upper. The bands caused extended discomfort to her and, unless she removed them at lunchtime, she would suffer severe headaches and rashes later in the day. Removing the bands for a break entailed hours of extra work in both removing and then re-applying her makeup and wig. On top of this, the bands would snap at the slightest turn of her head, causing yet more grueling repair time. Eventually, she learned to pivot and turn on her feet without moving her upper body or head.

Interesting little detail about the movie: The original idea of the ending, was going to be that he wasn’t actually Fester, but that essentially he was going to be considered an honorary member of the family. But none of the cast liked this idea. So they drafted a letter to talk to the Director about how they wanted it to be revealed that Fester really was Fester. And they one of the actress who plays Wednesday to be the one who presented it to the Director. Well, apparently it worked because they decided to switch it at the very end that the lightning bolt was going to jog his memory’s.

The original script would have ended with Gordon not being the real Fester but choosing to stay with the Addamses (tying into the larger themes of found family who loves you being better than the family you're born into that doesn't). Several members of the cast strongly objected and they chose a representative to appeal to Barry Sonnenfeld to change the ending and have Gordon be the real Fester. That representative was Christina Ricci. Clearly, her appeal worked. Interestingly, Christopher Lloyd himself was pretty ambivalent to the whole situation and was fine with either ending.

I’m so glad you liked this, it really holds up. You’ll love Addams Family Values even more, it’s sooooooo brilliant! Great cast, great story & Angelica Huston is ICONIC as Morticia - she had separate lighting just for her eye line which you noticed straight away because the simp count was 15 (I’m sure it was higher in your head!)

What makes the first movie so fun for me is how they built several quick scenes into the movie from the original one-panel cartoons, like the boiling oil dunk in the opening. Anjelica Houston does a great job, but she did have Carolyn Jones as a reference. So far, Christina Ricci is the best Wednesday.

4:37 was my favourite “application of a movie line into a licensed product” - they use that line on the pinball table when you start an extra ball

This movie & it's sequel always put a smile on my face. It's so much fun! I can still remember seeing them in the theater for the first time. I was in awe at how amazing this had become from watching the original black & white TV show when I was a little kid. Such a great cast of actors playing each classic character to a T. (chef's kiss) Secret Phrase answer - You simped for Mortica 15 times.

There's a reason that there's a well-known saying from the modern internet age: "Forget Romeo and Juliet--I want a love like Gomez and Morticia."

“The original Wednesday” Well, about that… there’s a whole TV series. With John Astin (father of Sean Astin AKA Samwise Gamgee) as Gomez. There’s also at least one animated series from the 60s,70s, and/or 80s. (Also, The Munsters kinda hits the same demographic as The Addam’s Family, if you want to check out any of that)
