I thought General shards didn't count for SVS

You can see in the video it works. You need to convert them to the hero shard you need first then ascend the hero.

Yeah definitely save them for events! They give massive points in SvS and other ones like King of Icefield. So you get something back for using them.

Some people do save until SvS prep phase to help out the server. I would still try to complete events and save a bit to finish this one too. Rewards are pretty good. This is largely dependent on how active your alliance is and how much spenders you have. As F2P your priority should be to get into the most active alliance you can. Every chest helps
