This is the fifth year for our deer mineral pit. Over time we've learned what works best. This year that lead us to mixing it up, after trying out the Lucky Buck Mineral product from the Mar-Vo mineral company last year, I decided to put in two different products in this year to get a good long lasting mix.
Picked up sixty pounds of Trophy Rack Four65, which is basically a Trophy rock ground down to rock salt size. Since I really liked the Lucky Buck from last year I picked up one twenty pound bucket to use in combination with the Four65.
Lucky Buck really brought the deer in last year, but faded a little bit about after about four to five weeks. It's best to refresh your Lucky Buck pits every thirty days with about five more pounds. Since I don't get up there that often I went with the Four65 as the base because it would last longer. Then spread the Lucky Buck around the edges of the pit.
Both together should make for a heavily used, long lasting mineral pit. If you can't find the Four65, try Imperial Whitetail 30-06 minerals. That's another great product that I've had success with in the past.
Try to have a water source close by, and don't forget to check your State's Game Laws before proceeding.
Good luck in 2016!

Whoever at Trophy Rock came up with the idea for the 465 should get a raise they figured out how to sell the scraps of the broken up rocks which was genius.

Per your advise in your last mineral site video, we use Lucky Buck. I can't say enough good things about it. Like you, within a weeks time of putting it down we had pics on the game cameras. However, we do keep a mineral site up on the off seasons as well. Were lucky enough to be able to visit our property on a bi-weekly basis.Deer can't get enough of it! Love the videos! Keep em coming my fellow Pennsylvanian!

homemaid is much cheaper....one part stock salt....two parts trace minerals.....one part Di-calcium phosphate.... depending on prices in your area you can end up with 200 lbs of minerals for cheap price... stock salt is about 7.00 per 50lb bag trace minerals (red kind) is about 7.50 per 50lb bag the Di-calcium phosphate is more but can be left out i think it was about 18 bucks per 50 lb bag i get one bag of stock salt and one of the Di-cal then two of the trace minerals since it calls for two parts of that....so thats right at 40 bucks for 200 lbs of mineral....it works great too....get tons of pictures....

+B Shaker Thanks, may try something like that next year. Put it off because I have to haul all the stuff up there, then down to our pit. We have a 4-wheeler now, should make it a lot easier to transport.

It works great.. I do top it with a sweet liquid attractant to really get them using it. Just what has worked best for me. And I add water to what's left in the jug and pour it in on my next visit.

The lucky buck I put down lasted about three weeks. The traffic was incredibly heavy for those three weeks. I'm going to add the minerals that you suggested so hopefully the area holds up a bit longer.

You are right about that, the only thing I don't like about Lucky Buck that it disperses too quickly. I would suggest adding a Trophy Rock in there. That's what I will be doing up the Cabin this year.

The lucky buck will get into the soil when it rains or if there is moisture. The deer will literally dig the soil up to get to the mineral that's soaked into the earth. I poured some over a dead log and they literally ate part of the log out

Jealous of the little natural spring you have there! I have a creek running through my property so can’t really use it to mainly focus on to hunt cause it’s hard to pinpoint and exact area where they drink from it

I hope this is a great year for you guys at Go-time Camp, with all your work, I look forward to your camp videos, have you guys had any luck yet with the Pennsylvania gobblers ? I've been hearing them but no luck yet seeing them in range. Thanks for sharing your videos.

+john blackie Hey John, no not yet on the turkeys. Just had our spring trip last week, when the video comes out you'll see why. The rain didn't help either. Going to try to get back soon and give it a go.

Great video and very informative. Wow, that is quite an impressive mineral pit. Do the bears ever bother with the mineral pit? What a beautiful place to deer hunt, thanks again for sharing. Regards Mark

+backcountrypipe Hey Mark, been working that pit for a while now, normally go pretty big with it. Bears come and go, they don't seem to be as regular to it as the deer. Checked our game camera there last week. Had deer in within eight hours of putting the minerals out, if I get a chance in a few weeks I will freshen it up a little. That's a key when your putting down ground up products. It's a good area, problem is the hills, here in DE the elevation is about the same as your kitchen floor, flat, flatter, flattest. I get spoiled by it.

+whiterook85 I've used it for 5 years now and I definitely notice a difference in the antlers size of the deer.

I can't use that here in NY, but what is the difference between deer that do get the minerals and ones that dont? Big difference in antler size and fawns or not?
@whiterook85
@whiterook85 7 жыл бұрын
I think there will be a difference, but will it be significant, honestly probably not as much as the makers of the product will admit too. But having said that, I think it helps bucks with antler development, and the fawns with growing stronger and healthier. Plus it keeps the deer in your general area. I still plan to put some out again this year and years to follow.
