If you deal with noisy recording spaces but want to have relatively clean voice recordings (podcasts, narration voice-over etc.): Try the combination Waves Clarity vx and Sonible smart:gate. One plugin cleans within the signal, the other in the spaces between. Astonishing results.

I concur, this is the logical purpose for AI/software learning, and should have come first in their line.....but no matter, it's here....yaaay! 🤗 This is a tool that will speed up everyone's work flow, when dealing with acoustic drums, and that's all that matters. It would take me waaaaay longer to achieve this with a stock gate, and side chaining, and freq focusing. I've been having some good results with the Denise Audio Poltergate. It's much more flexible than the traditional gate, and gives better results. But it still takes time to dial it all in to get great results. SmartGate is the next evolution forward 😉👍

Good analysis. I tend to have a different approach towards microphones in general, if the build quality and such is okay, its purely about the sound. I see microphones as color’s for a painter. This is why I love your reviews. Personally I use standard gate, it has an fully eq able sidechain, mid side processing (with the ability to detect and process different channels, such as detecting a kick with the mid and processing the side to get rid of any cymbal wash for instance), different modes for rms window, percussive, peaks etc. it has fully variable lookahead, ratio, modes for ducking, gating, upwards expansion, oversampling. I think even regarding how good Sonible's other plugins are, this is the most obvious one to get for a mixing engineer. You tried it on drums, but using it for removing/taming breath on vocals saves SO MUCH TIME. I'm testing it today and I'm pretty sure I'll buy it even before the trial ends. By the way, if Sonible's engineers are reading this comment, I'm having very big performance issues using Smart EQ, on M1 Mac with Logic Pro. The plugin looks cool, but I am very skeptical when companies use word artificial intelligence in the plugins. Simply because AI requires lots of processing power and GPU to be truly usable and to do its job. And this feels just a marketing term.. I could be wrong of course, but I feel that it's just a bit more advanced than the regular programming. There is probably a very lightweight neural network that has some kind of AI capabilities, but it's definitely not a full AI implementation. @@Fastvoice thanks for the information! I don't need more gates than I already have, since I'm not usually working with "real recordings" (only vocals). Demoing is a double edged sword. Once you have a plugin in one or multiple sessions you almost have to buy it, unless you're willing to invest the time to switch it for other plugins. Thus, I only demo things that I think I really need and want! I was just theoretically interested.

@@akagerhard I usually try out new plugins in copies of older sessions where I used older plugins of the same kind. So I have a good A/B comparison and don't run into the "must buy" problem you described. I even have created some dedicated example sessions with noisy tracks to try out "noise removers" and gates.

It’s an ok gate, the sonnox gate is as good or better. The thing about Sonible is their customer service is absolutely awful, it’s so bad and they are so rude and unpleasant that a number of influencers on KZbin have severed ties with them just for this

From a philosophical point of view: Now even real recorded drumkits sound like sample libraries. If you can subtract the bleed that well... what sense does it make to record a drumkit anyway? The human feel? bollocks. Record sample drums in real time, there you go. Or take e-drums to trigger the library. The sample libraries of Handheldsound for instance are so good (and big!) that you have no lack of articulations. You can even open the Hi Hat gradually with the mod wheel. I think Glenn Fricker might disagree. But if he is honest, THIS plugin makes the difference literally inexistent.

Having purchased a Polyend play after watching many videos, Bo, Cookie, Ben, everyone , only to find that the midi implementation was awful. I don’t really trust many KZbinr anymore. However, I recently purchased the smart bundle because, the overwhelming majority say that the Smart plugins are really good. My thoughts are that a conspiracy this large would be unaffordable by Sonible😂

The danger of this plugin is, it can make one lazy on mic positioning, no worry we can fix it with the Sonibel plugins... !

@@Whiteseastudio excellent. I've been having wonderful results with it. Initial release was a tad buggy GUI wise (on Windows AAX at least) but they released an update almost immediately. Sits right up there with their other must-have, Trackspacer.

Hello, I'm a fan of you and Sonible, but unfortunately I'm a beginner in mixing. I think it's great to be so enthusiastic, but at the same time so critical. I do very simple things in folk music and old hits and Sonible's plugins give me a lot of positive things. (my products: smart reverb, smart limit, pure limit, smart com 2, smart EQ, true level, true balance and now also smart gate) Unfortunately, I really miss the fact that there are no useful tutorials for the respective plugins, neither in English nor in German. Please please criticize this at Sonible as well. I subscribed to your site today and would be very happy to get some more help for my hobby. Thank you for your critical and also very expert input on Sonible's plugins. Greetings from the Ötztal mountains in Tyrol. Joseph Ribis👋👍

The thing with affiliates discourages me that you need buys to get revenue. So you are instantly in a position of an advertiser, and what advertiser wants to point out the problems in its product? (And it is not a critique for you specifically, I like your videos.) But generally I think it is conflict of interests. If you want more money you have to sell more stuff, but if you make honest reviews where you clearly point out the problems, or clearly say that X plugin does everything that Y does, then who would buy Y? Me, as an average viewer, can never know if the reviewer praises a product because it is really good, or because he wants more revenue, or because he is afraid that the given manufacturer will blacklist him in the future if he says the truth.

Great analysis, and it's something I'm keeping a very close eye on in my own business (and not just me, I've got friends that are really honest towards me). Also, lying to the audience (trying to sell people things they don't need, or that are not good), in the long term will only bring damage. It may lead to benefits in the short term, but I'm not here for the short term :-)

If you was using affiliate links to simply make money shilling, you would have countless videos on here, this is how I see it. I never see you shill on anything unless it is actually speaking for it self. Even the ones you are not impressed by you leave a affiliate link, so you are never swayed to give a good review to get more money. What you are doing is what everyone has do, they have to make a earning some how. So like a corner shop... you have coke-A-cola, you have Tango, you give your honest opinion on both... if I didn't trust your thoughts then I don't need to travel to another shop to buy it, I'm at a computer. Anyone that shops through a affiliate link on channels such as this doesn't do it blindly, they respect you and if they want something, they will do it when mindful toward you as respect just like leaving a like and subscribing. This channel is not like these million subscriber channels that basically do this through their sponsorship, which is a advert without review and that will go unminded . I think these links are fine... you at least do not do a kids TV show like expression to your videos which really undermines peoples intelligence to sell these products like is the next new flavour of Haribo sweets. I think it's a necessary thing to do for the means to continue to make this content and also I think it is a good way to take back the free advertising you give to these companies even if a review is not in their favour. It costs the same to any one that uses it also... plus you aren't making loads of it, just a extra bit of cash flow to keep your boat afloat.
