I don't think the audio needs to change depending on the plugin format. The plugin just gets buffers full of floats, whether it's vst or CLAP or anything else. Afaik.
@Whiteseastudio3 күн бұрын
One of the concepts I’ve discussed, but afaik is not in CLAP, is communication between the plugins in the chain. That way, if 2 plugins that are next to each other are oversampling at the same rate, no downsampling in between is needed.
@DanWorrallКүн бұрын
@@Whiteseastudio that's a tricky one: my guess is the DAW would have to be involved, it wouldn't be possible for the plugin or plugin format to do it independently. I could be wrong about that. But also, it's actually worse from the point of view of reducing aliasing, so I don't think you could assume it's always desirable.

Heeey Wytse, happy new year! 🙃 Sascha here (former Tegler Audio) As good as the FabFilter videos are, I just loved your Pro-Q4 review. It was so much fun watching you explore one feature after another and being so excited about it 💚
@THAMNOS3 күн бұрын
17:43 - Yes, it definitelly scales the amount of processing. I made myself a template where I have Pro-Q 4 on every single track (around 300 tracks lol). And it's very fast when all of them are activated but unchanged. The simple bands are also quite fast. It starts to get a bit slower when you turn on the dynamic functions, and ESPECIALLY when you turn on the spectral functions. If you also turn on the Linear Phase and make it High quality or better, it can really make your computer struggle.
@pewburrito3 күн бұрын
if you don't mind me asking, what sort of music do you make w/ 300 tracks? I'm assuming some kind of EDM? or is this more for TV/Movie sound production? I've made songs w/ 64 tracks, and maybe the first 40 or so were actual instruments. The rest were doubled vocals and sound fx, lead in, lead out, etc.
@THAMNOS3 күн бұрын
@@pewburrito I'm making metal, but I add a ton of orchestral and electronic elements. I pretty much approach metal as if it was a cinematic soundtrack in a way. The 300 tracks are just in my template, I usually don't use all of them. I keep them in my template so I can quickly use it if I need it!

Good reason to use spectral EQ is for example for de-essing. You cannot fix that at the source, you need to do that in post. And there are many things you need to fix in post. This why we have these modern tools, these FFT filters. Back in the day we said "you can't fit it in the mix" but nowadays we can fix a lot in the mix. In fact we will fix everything after it was recorded. I never ever hear something that is untreated these days. Everything is polished.

P.S., on the manual reading vs going in blind, I actually find it super helpful to see the first impression without reading the manual! If there's a thing that's annoying or a missing feature, I'd love to figure out that it's not an issue upon reading the manual for myself, but going in totally blind is a great gauge on how intuitive a plugin or piece of gear is by nature. Don't think your approach should change!

Happy New Year Wyste! Yes, please make both plugin comparison videos! I don't think the Omnipressor plugin is going to hold up to the hardware. Only because how much is going on inside. The Omnipressor plugin is very good tho! However, I feel like the difference between the Pultec clone and software will be MUCH closer. Very curious to see how they turn out. Ya, I surprised Pro Q4 didn't have transient/sustain mode as well! However, I would still use Split EQ for it because while other companies have given the option they don't have all the other parameters to tweak like Split EQ does. So FF would have to make sure to have those same options as well for me to get rid of Split EQ. Those extra options make ALL the difference most of the time (Seperation, decay, and smooth). The other thing I would like to know is what "sonic" changes were made because on the FF website it says (or at least it did, it's possible they changed it) that the also updated the sound quality but I've seen several null tests that disprove this. Pro Q3 and 4 perfectly null with each other. So I would like to hear an explanation from FF about what they meant when they said that and why it was said. I belive it was the top listed feature in the updates on the product page! Or at least on of the top ones.

I'd be interested in both the videos you mentioned, the Pultec & Omnipressor one. Did you see the Eventide video a few years back with the original engineer talking about the omnipressor and someone says something like "of course you wouldn't be able to make something like that now for a reasonable price" and the engineer looks thoughtful and says "well maybe you could". Don't know if it was a set up but it was a few years before the remake appeared.

Another use-case for spectral compression is working with sample libraries and modeled instruments. I had a solo violin lib that was great for its many articulations but I wasn't ever happy with its basic tone, which was infected with some obnoxious inharmonic resonances. For the first time, thanks to ProQ-4's spectral filter I am able to use it without grimmacing.
