Distressor Part II would be awesome. Thanks for the breakdown, I definitely benefited from this tutorial. It's one of those compressors that's hard to know what it's actually doing because every tweak makes the compression almost entirely different. It definitely made me reach for it less because of how overwhelming it seemed.

Ive been using the UAD Distressor for quite some time. I can say that it is very good especially on vocals it surprised me actually. I will say that if you really crank it, you will start to hear a noticeable difference compared to the hardware unit but since I'm not using it that aggressively it does a really great job within my workflow.

I own a hardware Distressor and the UAD version. The UAD version is very good but to my ears, the software does not emulate the Dist 2 or Dist 3 very well. However, the UAD is still very good.

There are videos on KZbin doing this. Lots of guys with the hardware say they are hard pressed to hear the difference at all, especially in a mix. There will always be some differences with relation to what your setup is and how the analog components output. But this is probably one of UAD's better results of giving you what a hardware unit gives you.

Fun fact about the distressor. If you own a physical unit, take the lid off. They file away all of the values on the chips inside so if you ever need to repair it, it has to go back to ELI.

When you engage the HP filter at 80Hz on the Distressor, it doesn't cut or reduce frequencies below 80Hz in the audio signal itself. Instead, it prevents low frequencies below 80Hz from triggering the compressor as aggressively.

The thing with the dual bypass buttons may also have to do with audible clicking when bypassing using the switch on some DAWs when the processing is cut off, compared to a more seamless transition when just bypassing the effects with them still running in the background. It's a bit of a knish reason to have something, but it's for sure something I've noticed in the past with certain plug ins that have both an on off, and a bypass button.
@sony_mdr7506 Жыл бұрын
i definitely notice this with some plugins in ableton and its always such a hassle to get rid of the clicks, so i do appreciate this
@DaftFader Жыл бұрын
@@sony_mdr7506 Yeah it's especially helpful when automating effects that punch in/out at certain times. It's useually caused by the daws inbuilt delay compensation for plug ins skipping or jumping back a few samples when a latency causing plug in is turned on or off. Some DAWs have their own internal bypass that doesn't change the delay of anything when bypassing, but not all, and even when they have it, it's not always on by default afaik.

This plugin uses 6.5% of my CPU per instance which is huge! And I'm using a Ryzen 9 7950X! I've generally found that UAD plugins are overly CPU hungry compared to the likes of Arturia plugins which are better in every way. Sadly Arturia doesn't offer a Distressor yet. It does make one wonder if UAD's poor CPU efficiency is simply a lack of optimisation, or a means to sell more external processing hardware units...

Gotta try this. It seems you are critical regarding autogain. Doesn't not having autogain make the plugins more authentic since you don't have that option on the original analog units? Keep up the good work. Love your channel.
@crookman4211 ай бұрын
it may be more "authentic", but in a very stupid way. The thing with analog gear is, that you can use it with 2 hands simulatenously to turn one knob up and another one down. You can't do this with your mouse cursor, therefore adding autogain (better yet: switchable and/or adjustable autogain) would actually match the original hardware experience better

so with auto-gain... I sort of agree with your two hands argument (you don't have two hands to gain match ITB).. HOWEVER, depending on your DAW you can map the input/output to a midi control surface, which I find better because you can do a small gain cut/boost if you want to.. put another way, I find plugins with "gain compensation" frustrating because they're often locked together, and quite often they're NOT actually 100 gain matched (because of the processing) which means A/B'ing is a nuisance

I never understood why the Distressor hype. I had a pair (hardware) in my L.A. studio for about 10 years, but ultimately ended up selling them on Reverb. OK, yes, it works well to squash the hell out of overhead mics but that's about it. It has a muddy tonal character that (to me) negatively impacts vocals, acoustic guitars, etc. Its sidechain doesn't use an RMS signal-to-control voltage converter so that the decay of any ringing chords (think chorused clean electric guitars or acoustic ones where complex harmonics occur) is quite choppy and chattery. It is true that this unit came out quite early when there were not too many alternatives (other than the 1176, LA2A and Fairchild, not counting the DBX stuff and a few others). To me, there are better plugin compressors these days making this unit obsolete.
@leebuck8532 Жыл бұрын
They probably make more sense to guys like me. I'm not swinging at the fences for it, but I'm a metal guy and we tend to like saturation. But acoustic guitars? Yeah, those probably shouldn't be distorted lol
@zorantodorovic6713 Жыл бұрын
@@leebuck8532 I love saturation when it can be added in controlled amounts. But a compressor should, first and foremost, provide a transparent dynamic control. It shouldn't be foggy, and the Distressor is. Maybe I'm old school, but the less one notices the action of a compressor, the better. Pumping, breathing and chatter are results of an imperfect side chain. Yes, they can be used as an effect, that's fine when it's useful, but they are mostly unwanted. Same with a slow attack that makes funk muted guitar licks pop out. Or a pop of a snare drum or a tom. But in all other cases, you want to get rid of it. Try putting a Distressor on a slapped bass and you'll be quickly discouraged.
