Don't believe a movie review if the reviewer doesn't understand the movie. In this case, Ceilings of Sound is misunderstood. Don't dismiss it. Its really a very powerful and useful plug-in. I reach for it before I use the usual EQ stuff like Pro-Q. You just gotta spend time to learn how to use it. PS the "rocky" interface has been removed and now is much more pro looking!

I have that plugin and I its my go to. The presets are the magic. Each presets changes the tone on what ever you use it on. like drums or vocals.

I agree. They should do away with the rocky interface however, I use this eq and like it, because it helps me find an even distribution of frequencies very quickly- especially on pianos (be it to a pink, brown or even gray curve). Once I have the even distribution of frequencies in the range I want, I peel back on areas of the eq to say, to lower the subs to make way for a bass guitar- using it just like I would any other eq. I also find that, because frequencies are more evenly distributed, my compressors don't seem to have to work as hard- which is something I really like as I try like hell to use compressors as little as possible. And for those beginners who can't get your mixes to sound good on cell phones, this will help you get there more quickly. Remember, a lot of the best mixes over the years have roughly conformed to a 6db (Brown) curve. Users of iZotope's Ozone 8 EQ know that iZotope includes a 6db eq option. Unfortunately, they dropped that option in Ozone 9. And yes, I also agree that as time goes, hopefully, more features will come. So, I understand the knocks everyone is making on the plugin but, honestly, it has helped me. I'm not affiliated with the company in any way.

If you're going to review something then review it properly. Had you loaded a preset and clicked conform or created a "ceiling" of your raw sound source, manipulated it then clicked conform the true nature and power of the plugin would have been glaringly obvious. There's a reason why those who already endorse it use it. The audio industry is always chasing noise, it is what we follow when mastering audio, designing & tuning recording studios, concert halls and movie theaters, for just as the spectrum of light is perfect color the spectrum of noise is perfect sound. Imagine if you could harness noise itself to drive your equalization process. That's what COS Pro does. After 15 years of development the process works beautifully and yes the 50-band and 31-band equalizers are fully automate-able. The GUI is supposed to be fun and granted needs a make-over which is what we're doing now but if that's someones benchmark of a good plugin they're buying plugins for the wrong reason. A 7-day trial is more than enough since everyone who tries it understands why it's called a Hyper-EQ immediately. It was designed to be insanely easy to use, fit into anyone's workflow and be utilized in many different ways which is why it is already many peoples go-to equalizer around the world and the number is steadily rising. It's been two years since I've been using COS Pro and I'm super happy with my decision .. It's super versatile and precise .. I admit that it took me some time to understand its principle but the result is sensational .. Only the convenience and (maybe the misunderstanding ) you would prevent some from approaching this incredible plugin!

With pink noise there is equal energy in all octaves, while white noise has equal energy at all frequency’s. That’s also why pink noise sounds more natural.

Yes, Pink Noise is also called Fractal noise - it's got slopes that reduce on a per-octave mathematical basis, but it's not clear if there is a perfect rate. I wouldn't call it equal energy (I think the Wikipedia octave is using loose language when it says that - it is equal only in that the slope follows a per octave rate rather than a per-frequency rate - but equal energy to me leaves out the slope factor). Menno seems to have found that Fibonacci 3 & 5-based slopes are conducive to natural noise - which is a concept I like - being a Fibonacci nut. Also, the presets in his EQ are phenomenal. I recommend getting the demo and, just for kicks, checking the kick drum presets out on a kick sample.

The stones at the side are gone now. Using noise profiles as a ceiling of perfect sound is quite smart. Ayaic mixing monolith is another plug-in to look at!

Interesting. When you matched the track to pink noise it actually sounded ok here on my earbuds but you only played a microsecond of it. Would have been good to maybe adjust from the pink noise line to your taste. As you say, all those eq points cab bring phase problems but it might be a good guide ... I guess you could create a pink noise setting in FabFilter match eq to do similar thing?

I found an interesting article here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colors_of_noise I wasn't aware that there were other colors of noise. I thought pink noise was based on the human hearing range, but it is not. That said, it is a good starting point for tuning a room. Human hearing also changes according to the sound pressure level (SPL) i.e. volume. Perception of high and low frequency increases as SPL increases; thus the loudness button on your old stereo amp. I remember when The Rolling Stones albums in the 60s and 70s would have a note saying: "This album was mixed at high volume and should be turned up loud for full appreciation." Or something to that effect. Nowadays we tend to mix at low volume to avoid ear fatigue and hearing loss, but every now and then I like to turn it up just to check...

Hahaha I remember when I first started using Fabfilter 10 years ago and I was the only one using it at the time. Everyone was saying the same shit your saying about Sonnox plugins and Metric Halo! But the real "Money in the bank" or whatever the fuck slang you call it nowadays, is that there will always be a new next greatest must have plugin! And that is a fact! For right now it might be Fabfilter, but next year it might be something else! Or the year after that...etc. Pretty soon there will be one and then well see if your still doing sound in say 5years what you think is the next greatest pugin! Hell I remember when Softube first came out! Their 1176 clone was "The Must Have PLugin"! And now not many use it on every session! Instead you see CLA's 1176 one's all over the place still to this day! And the reason? They sound pretty good and are cost efficient! I prefer their sound to most of the 1176 clones out there! And even though many people dog Waves plugins....everyone's got em! They might not be the nest greatest thing, but Pro Producers still use them every single day. So ...to the point with this rant....Plugins are all just the same shit, recycled over, and over again! And it's the money machine that really makes you use it! Not that you NEED IT or it will make your mix sound the best ever! Hell Fabfilter is really a jacked up eq7 from pro tools on steroids, with a couple tricks in it! But does it have a sound? Can you boost all frequencies on it and it will still make your mix/guitar/vocal/etc. sound like tits dipped in gold ringing in your ear? Nope ! I remember you used to add eq more on analog gear than cut, and now on digital with plugins you HAVE to cut more and the whole process makes the mix lose something! Well NO SHIT! That's because your cutting all this shit outta of your recording! It's making it lifeless! When you watch legends such as Chris Lord Algae mix, do you ever see him cutting the piss outta his mix's? NO! He uses his desk and adds this, adds that, etc.! If there's a big problem he'll cut a little, but that's it! Meaning, that if you have to cut anything outta the mix, it was not recorded correctly and you should go back and re-record it! But NOOOOOO! No one does that nowadays! Which is a shame and why everything sounds like piss in a pail, instead of sounding like piss off a mountain into an ocean! It's a bland eq, the only thing that makes Fabfilter great is it's ease of use. But tbh, it should be a stock plugin in your daw, as it does NOTHING special! It's just a well, laid out idea! I want more colour to my mix, where....Yes I'm gonna use that on Overheads every time now, as it makes my cymbals sparkle.....Yesss I'm gonna use that on snares every time as it makes em crack! Yesss I'm gonna use that on bass every time cause it makes it deeper! Yesss I'm gonna use that on vocals every time cause it makes em pock out of the mix in a killer way, etc. You see what I mean? Good talk! Carry on!

You got that wrong, pink noise is equal energy per octave and gives you a flat line, white noise is equal energy per frequency. Pink noise for checking rooms, white noise for checking electronic gear. This time you really should have read that manual then made the video, you aren't doing the company any favours by guessing when their software is on test when they gave you a license for free.. The white noise is more structurally accurate, Pink noise is not calibrated to human hearing, it simply represents the energy divisions in which human hearing operates within. As for those stones, I think they were stoned when they did that bit.

white noise is equal energy per frequency. pink noise is equal energy per octave. humans hear logarithmically (in octaves), ie we don't give the octave from 10khz-20khz the same importance as 0hz-10khz. white noise does because it's the same amount of individual frequencies. thus white noise sounds "brighter" (more and more high frequency energy). pink noise is a representation of what we interpret as flat.

I have a question. What is your opinion on transient designers? And have you ever used one. If you're not familiar with what it is, it's basically a device that lets you boost or cut the attack and/or sustain on a percussive sound signal. Unlike compressors, they are volume independent ie. they don't have a threshold.

I like these kinds of EQ, but I don't really use them like traditional EQs . I mainly would use it to alter the sound.. versus correct some part of the original spectrum. I'd use something like this for soundscape effects to shape a new sound. Great stuff.

White noise has equal power across all frequencies, but we are more sensitive to sounds as they get higher. Pink noise is white noise that is weighted to human hearing. (it rolls of in volume as it goes higher)

Rather than using a bank of filters like a graphic EQ, couldn't they be using convolution? Generating an impulse response based on the curve you draw every time you press the "conform" button? Seems like that would be a better approach in terms of both CPU load and not having to deal with the problems associated with using a bunch of filters. Or it could be FFT based, if I'm not mistaken tat also gets around the phase distortion problem.

It does seem to be a sort of MatchEQ, from just watching your video here. What seems to be seriously lacking is an "amount" control where you are matching to pink noise and then setting a percentage toward that rather than all or nothing. Also constraining the high and low end by dragging in "do not touch" filters from the right and left sides seems to be in order. It looked like it made a curve for you with 32 nodes that you could then adjust? Something that does this in the best way possible, better than any other, I would certainly purchase. They have a "Tutorials" tab on their website which I will watch to see if I can learn more. I like the idea and want this to be something special, which it might not be. If the plugin would auto-generate a ceiling in range you tell it, rather than the whole range, that would make sense, but it's a bit different with this particular approach. This isn't at all like Gullfoss because IMHO with the plugin you're trying to understand optimal acoustical instrument behavior, and if you tell it you only want part of that range to be computed, I'm not sure why that can't work well, but you can edit the whole range and then zero out the values on top and bottom where you don't want to influence the sound.

This thing does everything automatically. In other words, you draw your final freq response with this plugin, you're not just moving your EQ bands around until it sounds flat.

White noise is equal energy. Pink noise is equal energy per octave (half per octace =6db, because an octave is double amount of frequencies) GREY noise is ideal. Its just what people perceive to be 'flat' because our ears are not perfect, they have crap prescence end that needs boosting, and have a peak at 1k for speech and stuff like that.

Reporting back... Grey Noise made my mix even better. I sidechaned an Official 24 bit, 96k Grey Noise file from WAVETONES. I EQ matched via FabFilter PRO Q3 and did about 3 db of changes at the highest point. It made my GOOD MIX, Great!! It is even more punchy and open. After my usual mastering chain, the finished product sounds professional.

I don't think the bands crossover points are an issue. They seem to be working together fine. The biggest issue is that it is hard to draw a curve because everything to the right of the point you are moving also moves, which would be a very odd if not impossible way to work. Maybe there is a setting to change this or maybe it will come in an update. The other issue is more fundamental and that is whether it is actually easier to work this way than with a standard EQ. Not sure yet, but I agree that it's an interesting idea that needs more work before it could maybe compete with a normal eq. However I must point out that you seem to have missed the "Auto Generate Ceiling" button, which is how you get a starting point that makes it easier to work with like a normal EQ (but still not because of the problem that everything to the right shifts).

I agree - I wish you could select some points and have only those points move, while keeping the other points in the previous positions. That would be the best upgrade to this IMHO. At present, you can work, as other people have said, by simplifying your initial shape, and you can hopefully eventually learn to get around it, but it would be helpful to have a 10 minute 1st grade tutorial, going through each thought process and user interface move. The video that's pinned to his channel is helpful, but it's still an 8th grade intro (remember first learning algebra?), not at all a first grade intro.

Ozone 7 has a matching EQ feature. This to me does not add any significant benefit. Certainly you can draw your own curve, but using what as a reference?? If it actually creates a smoother curve than Ozone or Fab, then maybe it's "better".

Although it resembles one COS Pro is not a "matching" EQ...far from it. A matching equalizer simply matches two sonic spectrum's and can very often leave things sounding worse. COS Pro adheres its EQs to sound ceilings where each section is in balance with noise itself so the outcome always remains musical. It's very hard to make it sound "bad".

It's all getting too precise and technical these days, - i use Pro-Q2 for corrective tasks and Airwindows CStrip and ToneSlant for tracks and busses, - i personally find the path of least resistance is the most rewarding, both sonically and creatively. ~ also enjoy the newer Fuse Audio Labs equalizers, they're more like frequency saturaters than eq. the VQA-154 and the new free one work really well together and really gel well with the Airwindows plugs... never sounding over-processed or degrading in any way...

I remember iZotope Ozone having this feature (at least up to version 5; I don't see it in 7), and in their implementation, you could "blend" it by specifying the strength, sort of like a mix or wet/dry knob. As for keeping plugin UI's small, maybe they should be adaptable so that those of us with 4K monitors don't have to squint.

For some reason, most plugin developers are super obsessed with shitty-looking skins, instead of just giving us some decent looking knobs and sliders. Due to this obsession with "fancy" graphics, they use BMP files for the graphics, instead of vectorizing them, so scaling is very difficult to implement in a way that looks good (if you can even say they looked good in the first place)

Actually it is nothing like that. COS Pro allows the user to be in complete control of the noise ceiling shapes that drive the EQ. Also if one so desires they can edit the 50 & 31 band Linear Graphic EQ at any time to make unmasking adjustments or automate every band for interesting effects during mix-down.

0dbFS is the digital equivalent of the maximum output of your converters. It has nothing to do with the bit resolution. The bit resolution defines the digital SNR. BTW, the only relevant channel meter is the meter of your masterbus. This is the one sitting before the DA converter. The meters of the tracks are just pure information.

this is not at all what this plugin is designed for. I wish he'd research what the plugin is for before he reviewed it. I've seen a couple vids now where he totally misunderstood what the plugin is for. I really like this channel, but he could do a bit better.

If you want to test a plugin, and you can not see directly what it does, maybe you should read the manual first to get a least a notion of what it can do. Seems like some of the White Sea Studio reviews are the real snake oil. Shame on you!

hmm.. tried the Pro... dont get it.. just a super simple EQ that is not even making my drums sound any better. To me this is pure snake oil. And trying to predict what EQ you want is WRONG!.. use your ears!.. dont look at frequencies!

@@tobytodelafontena I've tried it but couldn't really see what the unique features were. Found it difficult to do everything parametrically. Couldn't see anywhere for drawing in your own matching curve like this, and haven't seen that in any of the tutorials either.
