This is the main EQ I use for voiceover recordings. It really helps me decolorise the sound of my small booth during initial playback before manually tweaking it. After I'm satisfied with a correction, I render a short sample of a voice and use it as a reference in Smart EQ to create the voiceover profile. This allows me to maintain voice consistency across multiple sessions, as the voice can vary slightly from session to session. Once, after recording a couple of sessions, I had to change a mic for one of them, and the reference profile did a nice job of minimising the difference between the two mics.

@:4:48 . . . when loading in your own reference track, it's a good idea to chop your reference track into (for example) a chorus, verse, intro, etc . . . otherwise you might be trying the balance your chorus with a reference that is averaging everything within your reference track (chorus, verse, 2 minute ambient outro, that weird 12 second bongo intro . . . etc etc).

This was really helpful. I was having a hard time using this in my lofi productions as it kept trying to brighten things I was trying to darken. I didn't understand "track" vs "group", so this helps a lot!
@zach62153 ай бұрын
I also make lofi type music, did you ever solve this problem? I assume since you can use your own reference tracks, a big way to solve it would be to just use a lofi track as reference. Have you tried this?
@TeslaOsiris3 ай бұрын
@@zach6215 for LoFi, I just use smart:eq on “group” mode and it just notches frequencies that would be interfering based off of how I have them prioritized. The “track” mode wants to do tonal shaping against what I’m wanting the sound to be for LoFi…but “group” seems to be more about unmasking.

Great video, Wytse. I recently mastered a project the traditional way: EQ, comp, limiter, etc., but the client wanted a different outcome. Then I remembered that I own this plugin. Did a project where we recorded 90 songs in a week then mixed them over the following week. Group EQ was a game changer for this work as often I had 4 songs from the same artist. It meant that I could get one song mixed and then relearn the group EQ for each song which was a huge time saver when starting the next song.

Love SmartEQ. Hands down my favorite EQ. The one thing I wish it did is side chaining to bands. I often use a dynamic EQ on my guitars and sidechain snare to a specific frequency guitar to help it cut through. Same with vocals to instruments. So I use a different plugin for that, but for everything else this has become my go to. So hopefully if they ever make smart eq5 it will have ability. 👍

Thanks a lot for this video!! One thing which I would have loved to see would be the order in which you place Smart EQ on your track processing chain, especially when using it in group mode. The way I would normally use an EQ is to shape the tone before adding saturation / distortion (and potentially after it to clean up some added frequencies) and time effects. However here I understand that you need to shape a track in its entirety in comparison to the others - which might then have undesired consequences on your time effects or any type of groove you might add to the track via sidechaining or other. In the end, I guess my wish would be for having this plugin taking care of the last 10% fine tuning of my mix, when I did already 90% myself - but I’m not sure if that’s its intended use? Would be happy to have some insights onto how you’re all using it! Thanks!! 🙂

I have heard that while sonible smart eq handles phase shifts internally, it is not designed to correct phase misalignment between different tracks, is this true? If so whats the point of this damn thing? Isn't phase misalignment between different tracks fairly important? And if it is true, would Mastering the mix's Fuser correct phase misalignment between different tracks?
