FULL DISCLOSURE AS SOMEONE WHO GREW UP IN A BLACK HOUSEHOLD I WAS A CLOSET HEADBANGER BACK IN THE LATE 80'S. I HAD TO HIDE THIS FROM ALL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY ALL THE TIME. DON'T GET ME WRONG, I LOVED HIP HOP& R&B, BUT I ALSO LOVE HAIR METAL. I COULD'NT SHARE MY SECRET WITH ANYONE. I WOULD WAIT UNTIL EVERYBODY WENT SLEEP LATE ON A SATURDAY NIGHT AND THEN I WOULD WATCH HEADBANGERS BALL ON MTV WITH THE VOLUME TURNED DOWN. THIS SONG WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. SADLY I HAD TO HIDE WHO I WAS. A BLACK KID WHO LOVED HEAVY METAL. WHAT CAN I SAY, I WAS A WEIRD BOY.

I wouldn't say weird at all. You love music. I mean shit look at me. I'm a white dude and I listen to Eric b and rakim, big daddy Kane, boogie down productions, public enemy, ice t. All the old school rap is fuckin awesome. After snoop came out, I listen to him, but I can't listen to new rap. They honestly don't know how to. Shit I don't even like Eminem.
@BlackieNuff4 жыл бұрын
Hey Kevin, if it's any consolation, it was the same story on the other side of the tracks! A lot of white kids and metalheads with "closet" appreciation for rap, hip-hop, R&B, and whatever else was out there. Hell, even among the white kids, there was some serious clique shit going on - metalheads (or headbangers, as they were called then) versus the preppies (the mainstream "pop" crowd), and they were the two main "rivaling tribes" (or so they were in my little world), and if anyone DARED like anything else (country, classical, etc) it was simply unspoken lest ye be shunned and shamed. What a messed up mindset, so much wasted time and unnecessary shame for liking all kinds of music which could have only brought a lot of people together sooner. I was that dorky kid who was dismissed as a "wannabe" metalhead - I liked the music and the style, but I just was not "cool enough" to be officially welcomed into the fold of that crowd, and certainly not trendy enough to be accepted by the "preppy" crowd... so I sat on the outer fringes of both... and that might have been the best thing cos by not being completely immersed in just the one genre or clique, I was able to explore other genres of music (and retain those I was exposed to as a child courtesy of the parents, which was country, lol). There is no bad music except the commercialized crap they make today, lol.

more like led zeppelin 1 and 2 robert plant. Plant had moved on with different styles from led zeppelin III and onward. I grew up on 60s and 70s music with my mom, but Whitesnake was the first band that was Mine, that I claimed as my own. I was absolutely in love with David Coverdale (this was all before I discovered Aerosmith and threw my heart at the feet of Steven Tyler), and I loved every single song that I heard from this era of Whitesnake, but this one scared me half to death. Granted I was about twelve at the time; now I absolutely adore it. Is my favorite song they ever did, I think it's just absolutely spectacularly crafted and fantastically done, and David is at the height of his vocal talents in it (and Steve Vai on that guitar just kills it). This album (their epynonymous one), and the next one Slip of the Tongue, were IMO their to best albums; just loaded with hits and songs that should have been hits, and really just fantastic all around.

Quintessential 80s hair metal but that said, they had the musicianship and musical chops to sound great playing it.
@shawnloeffler60254 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I feel like Whitesnake were lumped in with glam metal, while they were stylistically outside of it. Their roots were firmly entrenched in 70s rock and were a bit more "mature" musically to be truly glam metal. Also, Coverdale, in general was too old to be a heartthrob for teenage girls, which was kind of a prerequisite for glam metal.
@purplebeard15264 жыл бұрын
I mean, Def Leppard could be put in that same basket. They started in the late 70s as well. But I mean the HAIR, the power ballads, and the guitar work are all in the makings of that era even if they started before the era actually caught on to be the era.
