Its species name virginianus is a throwback to its first Latin name Dama virginiana, which means Virginian fallow deer. As all deer have crescent-shaped molars, I think the reason white-tailed and mule deer were placed in the genus Odocoileus, which means hollow tooth, is because they were found to have different features from fallow deer. Can you believe all of that?
