Luv the fact that buckwheat is so easy to grow as well. I’m dealing with sandy soils so buckwheat does wonders. Great topic Jeff. Thanks

Great info Jeff. The no till program that you show has worked excellent here in SW Wisconsin. I have been using it for the last 4 yrs and the soil shows the results. Have a great day looking forward to the fall planting coming in the next few weeks.

Very informative, just confused me on one part. You mentioned that you throw seed before you crimp and spray the buckwheat, then later on in the video you mentioned that you throw seed after crimping and spraying. Can you do it both ways or did I just not understand something?

my plots are in a pine forest and the soil is more like sand and has a low PH. Each year i do buckwheat in the spring and a fall plot in July. Slowly we are getting a a decent outcome. I wouldn't spend good money on fancy seeds until you get buckwheat growing like mad. Then you know your soil is on the up and you will be happy with the plot. Cheers Jeff, learning lots!

I planted my food plot in buckwheat June 1st, I do every year. The deer are hammering it this year. I planted my front lawn 2 1/2 weeks later. It's 8 inches taller than my food plot currently.

I used to plant buckwheat 15 years ago when it was $20 a bag. I miss those prices! We always start out first year plots out with them in the late spring to compete with seed beds, then plant annual fall blends. After two years of that, switch to perennials. That rotation always works well

I had trouble with my buckwheat germinating this year doing no till process. After 2 years of no till I had too much thatch on top of my soil, not allowing seed to dirt contact. I had to drag my plot and re plant the buckwheat and now all is well. It may have to do with the large qty of popple leaves that fall onto my plot. What are your thoughts Jeff?

Didn’t plant buckwheat this year did John Komps soil builder blend to have a little more variety then straight buck wheat! Going to spray in a few weeks

I planted a small plot of buckwheat, about 1/2 acre. Idk if it's just the does and fawns, or the turkeys too, but the whole thing got absolutely devastated. This is a recent property I bought in the middle of big woods and swamp country. I've done everything to avoid the summer "doe factory" but still too many in the area?

So you seed after you crimp and spray or do you cast seed into standing buckwheat, then crimp and spray ?

When you plant your buckwheat spring/mid summer planning to over seed and spray/pack down for the fall blend. Are you working the ground before the initial buckwheat planting or just seeding on top and packing it in? Thanks!

Hey Jeff, great stuff as always! Off topic but when is it time to replace a licking branch? When the bark is been rubbed off, when you start seeing lack of use, other? I appreciate your insight!

What mines up nutrients better winter rye or buckwheat? Always was told nothing compares to rye. Your thoughts? Never grown buckwheat but use this method with winter rye every other year with awesome results

Im doing your no-till with your seeds in WV. Only 5 weeks and my BW has little whitish/red seeds already that crush and release a white sap. I wasnt expecting that so soon. I was hoping to plant your brassica and greens around 8/15. How long do I have until they are viable seeds?
@bjm83155 ай бұрын
At what point did you decide not to broadcast the seed into the standing buckwheat before crushing it over and killing it Just curious what made you decide to switch it up?

In the process of clearing 6 acres of pines eventually for horse pastures. Just got the weeds cut and sprayed and in 2 months it’ll be stumped. Hopefully just in time to plane a buckwheat cover crop in October. Maybe it’ll attract some more deer to the property until we can have a more permanent food plot solution.

Can I mow if I dont have a crimper?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97516 ай бұрын
You don't need a crimper in any way ..and best not to mow. A Packermax, lawn roller, ATV tires, truck tires, car tires...I've used them all! They all work. Buckwheat is the one planting you in no way need a crimper for.

Jeff, i live in upstate NY, our buckwheat is about 8", it was planted almost a month ago, is there something to help it grow? We only have a few inches of soil, we fertilized it when we planted

Just finished seeding a 1/4 acre clover plot and a 1/4 acre cereal oats for pass through plots. Ive got more buckwheat then i can handle around so i dont need to do any buckwheat planting. As of now anyways.

My buckwheat was knee high n the deer have come in n they have eaten it half way to the ground so that I don't have hardly any leaves left n now the grass is coming on.
@Schooloutdoors6 ай бұрын
When did you plant it?
@richstafford12456 ай бұрын
I have not been able to grow a successful stand of buckwheat. The deer mow it down before it gets a foot tall. This is confusing considering AG beans are only a couple hundred yards away. I would literally have to electric fence in the buckwheat to get a viable acre plot…

Actually having deer eat a bunch of the tops off of my buckwheat!
