Awesome video thinking of doing this I’m in southern Indiana think I can get two crops and I want to use the least chemicals as possible so was wondering i think I’ll plant it may let it go mid June so it seeds then mow it let it go mid July then do it the way Jeff does roll it and spray after seeding you think that’ll work?

In my worst plots I use a rotation of buckwheat and cereal rye. In my bigger plots I use a mix of either sunn hemp or cowpeas along with sunflower and buckwheat. Great tips and advice. People forget that the soil runs out of nutrients if you don't replace it not to mention the need to increase the CEC to unlock nutrients even if they are in the soil. Great video.

Some or all of buckwheat seeds can be harvested too, roasted, cooked it tastes amazing just with salt and butter, add to it some tomato paste and you will want it every day, so many recipes outhere.

The deer hit my buckwheat pretty hard. There is not any Ag by me. The buckwheat handled the browse fairly well. That being said I was wondering if you ever mixed buckwheat and peas ? The buckwheat seed was like $ 67 per 50 lbs by me. I figured I might as well use some peas at that price. Do you have any advice or experience with a pea / buckwheat mix ? Thanks Dave.

Thank you for your info. Got my second rotation of buckwheat in. Going to terminate for Labor Day planting of clover and chicory. Next spring when the clover comes back, can I mow and plant buckwheat again over the summer, and the clover will come up naturally next fall again? Or am going to have to terminate the clover totally to plant clover/brassicas next fall. Still building my soil. Bout an acre. Thank you sir
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Жыл бұрын
You would have to terminate/disc up the clover next spring in order to plant buck wheat again. If you are trying to build up soul a better option would be to plant brassicas this fall and or a annual clover instead of perennial clovers that way you can till in the clover in the spring and do rotations of buckwheat again

I’ve never planted buckwheat I’m a master bee keeper plus a professional hunter so my food plots are for both.90% of my plots are clover with some brassica either annual or bi! I haven’t had to had any fertilizer to my plots in years just normal mow.i do overseed occasionally with durana white clover by broadcast.im wanting to sow or no till buckwheat in a few of food plots will broadcast work I’ve been looking into buying grain drill or no till grain drill!I can usually get 5 years out of my clover plots just don’t want to till my established clover plots.remember im a bee keeper so herbicides pesticides are not going on my plots.buckwheat in my area is hard to find.and I use good seed without a deer or turkey on the bag!

Going to plant BW for the first time this spring here in South Georgia, (sandy soil) if I plant in May(depending on rain) can I mow it and allow it to come back, perhaps in July? Also, when you mow do you mow flat to the ground or raise the mower say 1 foot or so - so as not to cut it too short?, or does it matter? tks!!
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 10 ай бұрын
The idea of buckwheat is not to mow it. You want it to mature and then terminate it ans use for green manure to turn back into the soil. Once it matures in say 55 days then you can mow it and plant something else.

I think it’s a beast of a machine. It’s built like a tank and the weight of it is what makes it so great. I have the 4 ft one so it can be used on a atv or a tractor and it’s like 900 pounds. They don’t pay me but I do work with them. The only complaint I have about it is it’s so heavy lol. Trying to move it around isn’t easy. Never planted switch grass with it but you can.

Dave, thanks for all your help. I am in southern Ohio. Can I plant buckwheat, two rotations in summer, and the last time (late august, early September) while buck is still standing, spread my fall plot mix into the standing buck then just cultipack? Does clover have strength to get through the terminated laying down buck? Or is it necessary to turn buck under, then plant clover, chicory etc….

You can do it that way yes. If you use a cultipacker you will Most likely have to spray as well unless you use a crimper

Is there a best way to terminate buckwheat? I feel like rolling it and spraying it with round up kind of negates why I planted it
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
That’s correct. I never understand why someone would plant something green and growing just to spray it with chemicals. Sadly that’s the correct trend in the food plot world. Buck wheat has a life cycle just like anything else. Once it matured it will go to seed head and then die off. But most times we don’t want it to seed out because it will compete with our fall plot. So what I do is simply mow it and turn it back into the soil so I get the organic matter benefit from it
