Whitewater Bay, Flamingo - Stranded in the Florida Everglades

What can possibly go wrong on a small boat in Flamingo, Florida Evergaldes? When you prepare with gear and forget to pack extra gas you can only hope the local park rangers can help. Unfortunately we never saw the blue boat with white interior ever again.

One day the outboard of my very little boat was damaged just crossing the Tarpon Creek channel between Coot and White water Bay Bay and nobody wanted to help me. One fishing boat stopped and asked what happened to me and when He realized that I was a Fu.... Cuban he started and run away I had to row all the way up to Flamingo I will never forget that incident I hope that God will bless that guy that run away and left me alone in the middle of nowhere

Mid 1980s in shark river started taking on water , went to leave and moter started acting up, had to drive and p up pump bulb all the way to ramp. Got there right at dark only to find keys locked in truck. Mosquitos made me break the window, fun day

OMG, what an awful feeling... running out of gas. Out there in the middle of the glades. I've boated out of Flamingo a few times. The overwhelming feeling I get when I set out from Flamingo is that I am in a truly wild place. You must have been out of your mids facing a night out there with no power, no ability to control the boat. Good on you that you had the cojones to share the story with us. No question, that could have happened to any one of us.

Sorry you lost the boat. The smartest thing you did was to carry that VHF. I haven't been out of Flamingo in several months, but always monitor 16/68 when I'm out there. There is more traffic in the area than used to be and yet it is still a desolate place. Captains rule of thumb: burn no more than 1/3 of your fuel capacity to reach your destination, 1/3 fuel to return back and 1/3 reserve. If you haven't reached your intended destination within 1/3 fuel, turn around. Sometimes even that isn't enough but is the rule of thumb most good captains abide by.

NPS got the wrong coordinates or understood them wrong from coast guard and that was the biggest delay because we could not hear NPS but we could hear coast guard. NPS ended up in the wrong spot first but stuck it out in the channel.
