Whitney singing live is a whole other beast than her studio recordings! Many more layers!

"Following her performance during the Super Bowl, Houston decided to carry it over into a concert to honor the troops and their families, and the government and military dignitaries in honor of those returning from the Gulf War. The concert, held live at the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia on March 31, 1991, was broadcast live on HBO. Russell watched the broadcast, along with millions of others, and witnessed her live performance of “A Song For You.” He was so moved that he sat down and wrote her a letter of appreciation on how much he enjoyed her rendition, which he said he never did. He said never in his wildest dreams did he ever imagine one of his songs being performed that both brought tears to his eyes and sent chills up his spine". So Leon Russell who wrote the song loved Whitney's version so much that he wrote her a letter of appreciation for her version....I guess that proves that her version is one of the best!

Whitney was not only one of the best female singers of all times, she was also definitely amongst the best live performing singers. Her interaction with the band/orchestra was really masterful. Check out „I have nothing (billboard 93)“. I luckily had the chance to see her live in concert in the late 90ies. What a waste that we lost her to the drugs. RIP, Whitney!

As usual you feel everything she sings - to me that what sets her apart from other singers. She makes you feel what she sings. Even Leon Russell who wrote the song wrote Whitney a letter of appreciation after this performance. So people who commented that she didn't sing it right or whatever - the damn songwriter think she did!!

I've watched this concert countless times in my lifetime. This is one of my favorite Whitney performances, so thank you for reacting to this! Another one: "All the Man I Need" from the same concert (Welcome Home, Heroes). She's in a red dress. She was in her vocal prime here. If you really wanna see how much her voice changed over the years, compare this version (1991) to her album version (2009). 😭
