Unless there was a drastic change in a decade, I question your description of radio in the 80s. I grew up in the 60s and 70s and even then the "white" airwaves were full of The Temptations, Dionne Warwick, The Supremes / Diana Ross, Sly & The Family Stone, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, The O'Jays, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Earth, Wind & Fire, Commodores, and lots more. Obviously, Black radio has always played more Black artists but saying, "Whitney was one of the only black artist being played on white radio" in the 80s ignores some of the above singers along with artists like Michael Jackson, Prince, Tina Turner, James Ingram, Anita Baker, New Edition, Luther Vandross, Billy Ocean, The Pointer Sisters, Lionel Ritchie, The Gap Band, Rick James, Janet Jackson, etc. You may be thinking of MTV which originally aired pretty much no videos of Black performers in the early 80s.

Clive spoke a lot about how they needed the "right songs" and the "right production". They made many classic hits together, so I won't say he should have handled it differently. I think it would have been interesting if he had allowed her to take a few more musical risks. Everything was very clean and polished on record, but her live performances were completely soul stirring. It would have been nice if she had 1 album during her prime where she could just let loose vocally with some intricate instrumentation.

The music industry needs to formulate a plan to care and nurture this type of talent throughout the lifecycle of the artist not to just focus on the good times when money is to be made. They all need support at different stages in their careers . A single promoter like Clive cannot do it ,.
