Nobody can really sing The Star Spangled Banner like her. Cream of the crop, she was. I watch this every now and then when it pops up on my feed. I too, once again, paid attention to how she was dressed in nothing flashy, just a simple track suit yet the performance is so extraordinary. Out of this world. Many have tried to sing this, some have done it well, some not so well, some have tried to pump it up with glamour... but the "simple" way she performed this, she really embodied the spirit of the song. No unnecessary embellishments to stand out herself, no distractions. Just a woman singing a song and doing it so beautifully. Singing came so easy to her, the notes just glide out of her and it looks so effortless no matter how high or low she goes. At least that is how she made it look, though singing is hard physical work.

I remember how everyone ran out to buy this rendition on cd. It was jaw-dropping to our nation and the world quite frankly. It has been attempted by so many with some success but this is THE gold standard. From there on in, our National Anthem would never be looked at the same when someone stood at a mic. The national anthem is a hard song to sing with quite a few messing up. I still get chills.
@psycheinc-theSLC3 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree with you more chrome - it was a moment - the hairs on my body literally stood up especially at the end where there are complicated chord changes. The musical arrangement was specifically made with Whitney's range in mind and as you have rightly said, at the very least it is an extremely difficult song to sing, so when they re-worked the musical arrangement it was even more difficult. I loved your comment - superb! x

I remember being 10 in 1991 in a tiny little town in the middle of the country, absolutely terrified of the Persian Gulf War and getting hit with a missile as that was the first scary thing in my lifetime. Whitney brought that peace and love for our country at a pivotal time to settle nerves and anxiety. If she could get out there and smile that mega watt smile and belt out those notes then by God there was nothing to worry about at that moment, just beauty.

That rendition with that queen angel has to be one of the most truly patriotic moments for Americans in public history. I remember seeing it at the time it was performed, (maybe relative’s super bowl party?), everyone remarking, ‘wow, that was incredible!’ At the time, I don’t recall being as much aware of the accompaniment, which was equally incredible for the various reharmonized chords in the orchestration, that created a beautifully padded canvas for Ms. Whitney to work her superior grown artist vocal phrasing. Just absolutely amazing & perfect! Kind of emotional to watch, especially seeing her smile like that…. The radiance. Then to think of what became.😪. When her mom Cissy was younger, she had a smile like that, & she had a rich alto singing voice. When Whitney’s 1st album dropped (like 31 yrs ago, still had vinyl back then), Whitney performed a week long gig at a club where she had sometimes appeared with her mom for a few numbers. Now she was headlining her own gig there. The 1st single had been out for awhile, & while there was quite the buzz on the New York scene, she had not yet attained even a fraction of the iconic popularity she eventually attained, so that’s how this was possible. When she was done, I found myself standing next to her parents while Whitney was making her way from the stage through the crowd to leave. So I congratulated Ms. Cissy, saying she must be quite proud, & she was very gracious & humble, but beaming that smile & said, ‘Yes, thank you.’ I know you can relate to having a good smile. But anyway, I guess I’ll never forget that moment, nor that anthem. Sorry to go long. Another fine reaction on your part. Cheers!

If Whitney was not born for anything else except one thing, this anthem would be it. It was meant to be her! I am 54, and have heard many sing the anthem, but this was the best i've ever heard and probably ever will in my life. When she sang this, America was at war with Iraq, and many whom would like to enjoy 'America's favorite pastime' football were in a land far from home fighting the war. There was also the uncertainty of what was to become of nations that never knew freedom(iron curtain or eastern block nations), that finally had to make decisions on what was to become of their newly found freedom. America was no longer looking over its shoulder, but the work of restoring, or helping to restore was riddled with question marks for many unanswered days to come. But for that brief moment in January in Tampaback in 91, after the beginning ceremony, we were all as one indivisible, no matter where we were, no matter what the uncertainty tomorrow would bring, no matter where we came from, no matter where we were going, and no matter what are background, or no matter what our task..... We were all One Nation Under God!

I was a child when she sang this live and 30 years later I still tear up every time I hear it. This is THE standard when it comes to the anthem and I will be very surprised if anyone tops it in my lifetime. The arrangement took some liberties with the chord progressions, but it was still wholly true to the original. Whitney added her own glorious embellishments,but they were subtle, few, and serviced the pure rendition she was performing. She was and is known as “The Voice.” She can just stand there in a track suit and sing this notoriously difficult song without needing anything else. I don’t think there is a pop singer alive now who could do it this well. There are extraordinarily gifted vocalists now like Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, etc., but no one has the purity, clarity, power, and finesse with their voice that Whitney had. I am not an overtly patriotic person, but this version makes my heart swell with pride. Beautiful reaction and thank you!

My personal experiences as an Afro-American led me to bury my patriotism deep inside due to disrespect and poor representation. When my cultural sister sang the anthem, I felt so undeniably American. I still haven't realized the American dream but Whitney Houston in no small way reminded me of the promise of it.

Bless you Cassandra 🙏🏽🙅🏽♀️- yes it was a dreadful and sorrowful time, and one that we must not forget. But we also have to give thanks that this is a new dawn and a new day and how strong the American people are to have gotten through it, just like you. That is admirable beyond measure. Just remarkable really. It is a wonderful country and will always be. Have a truly blessed Sunday Cassandra, and may it be filled with everything you would wish it to be. Psyche 🙋🏽♀️✨🌹

I agree!!! I only was fixed on her face watching every twitch and gesture she made as every note was sung. I was fixed because l have heard/seen this performance 100X over and seeing the way she reacted, the way she was in awe, was to me...like giving an amazing gift to someone and sharing that feeling of joy as they open it up! Add to that, her detailed description of Whitney's delivery and the pride we the American people have for our country.
