Believe it or not, mariah said that in her prime (when she dished out belted f5s and f#5 like ebt cards during a recession) she was comfortable singing in her middle range. Whitney seems very at ease with belting up high, i just think that both mariah and whitney played it safe and didnt go higher
@Slaychelle5 жыл бұрын
@@evil8569 I agree, I think especially with Whitney's first few albums, she was very restrained in her ad-libbing, so unless the melody or harmonies called for high belts, she wasn't just going to insert them for the sake of like many singers today. Most of her upper belts are from 1990 onwards when her voice had started darkening. Likewise, though Mariah displayed more upper belting from the start, she seemed to show out more on later albums like Charmbracelet whilst Whitney's Preacher's Wife soundtrack had probably the most F5 belts of all of her albums even though her voice was losing that soprano height and tessitura.

@@Jay2k2323 Her tessitura is actually higher than most sopranos. The thing is she decides to use difficult cordinations, such as full head voice or M1 chest voice -even on upper belts-. That's why she sounds metallic hitting those G5's. Also, she has showcased an A5 belt on 1986 San Francisco concert. She has mixed up to C#6 in wanna be starting something. Her full head voice goes up to eb6(and she did it in 1999 out of prime in heart break hotel london). She has showcased whistle up to Bb6-which is countable an mantains her tone-. If you were you would kno of the legendary greatest love tour and it’s legendary upperbelts in every concert, her ICONIC F#5’s In who do you love live 1991 Tokyo dome, and she has more F#5’s here and there like the one F#5 she hits in do you hear what I hear on the jay leno show in 1990, and her F#5 part in all of the performances of hold up the night etc. supported/resonant F#5’s rlly aren’t that rare for her at all...do better
@Slaychelle6 жыл бұрын
KevOnIt You need to check out her 1986-7 live tour performances. She sustains multiple G5s with ringjng vibrato on I Am Changing. In the same concert she belts a live A5 in How Will I Know. She had more ease in this area than most.
@onedollarbleach68916 жыл бұрын
KevOnIt yes Whitney is chesty but it’s stylistic. She was raised in the church so that gritty chesty sound was implemented. Yes sometimes the chestiness got in the way but for the most part she could support and resonate. The Who do you love F#5 was perfectly open, resonate and powerful. You can tell because the sound doesn’t cut off or her tonal quality doesn’t suddenly Change. Her sound gets amplified. Whether your chesty or heady you can still support you just have to have technique behind it. I don’t know why you brought up joy to world, that was out of her vocal prime so it’s obvious it wasn’t supported. The damage caught up with her, and the F#5’s sounded like they were getting cut off by a high larynx. Moral of the story just go listen to sum Whitney concert videos, they have all the supported F#5’s and upperbelts in general
@onedollarbleach68916 жыл бұрын
KevOnIt oof, sounds like you need sum brushing up on Whitney but I’m glad I could show you my point. And yes ik Sohyang but let’s be honest, I’m talking about that authentic black gospel. Idk what kinda gospel Sohyang does but i don’t think Whitney and her are from the same background...also just because if someone is using a certain vocal aspect all the time doesn’t mean it’s not a stylistic choice. I mean Christina has been using the same horrible technique forever and i think it’s safe to say that that’s a (unhealthy) stylistic choice. Now I don’t condone sacrificing technique for a style, but Whitney’s worked for her. The same notes you hear her being very chesty on she can hit them Straight and clean but even still she can maintain a healthy technique using the chesty belt. Btw joy to the world was after her prime in 1996

She is also the benchmark most influencial singer (Besides Aretha) and arguably the greatest live singer in entertainment history. Remember which artist career and sound was originally moulded after who's.. hench their initally "rivalry" Mariah has her number 1's many great award, feats and accompliments is immensenly talented and a Giant in her own right. But if you must compare she is a Giant that came 2nd and will also be 2nd to Whitney Houston. Vocally she has a Whistle register and more prominante lows then Whitney (in both primes). Whitney however was a better live singer, had better control more musical ability (which gets overlooked alot) and could do whatever she wanted vocally within the limits "She set herself".
