vin2010 Whitney had supported her G5 belts in her prime. She has one of my favorite G5 belts and I like her F5s better than Mariah. Her Eb5 and C#5s are her best belted notes. Mariah I think owns E5 and F#5. All of Mariah's live G#5 belts are lipped. Her hero G5s from the daydream era are AMAZING they are supported. Mariah also has one of the weakest head voices I've heard from a soprano. Whitneys headvoice is extremely developed and her vibrato is amazing. I’ve never found Mariah’s agility that incredible, she has to contort her mouth and larynx to achieve her runs and has even admitted that she was not a gospel singer or riffer, she had to learn how to do it when she went solo. Singers like Brandy, Lauryn Hill & Jasmine Sullivan agility runs circles around both Whitney & Mariah but they had many things those other vocalists don’t have. While Mariah always impresses with her range, just how HIGH her belt & mix can go, imo she had never had the shear POWER that Whitney had in her prime especially in that 5th octave. Whitney’s power moves me to my core and makes me cry like when people cry listening to opera. Also, tone is subjective, but I think Whitney had the purest golden tone I have ever heard in my life. Lows: Mariah despite some of her lows sounding dry, it's amazing how low she can go; Whitney had relatively good lows for a soprano and they were still supported more often than not. Mid belts: Whitney's forte but Mariah is good here too. Upper belts: Mariah, but Whitney had the odd really great one here and there. Head voice: Whitney. Mariah lacks consistent use of it. Overall technique: Mariah but Whitney was still very proficient. Power, stamina and use of dynamics and vibrato: Whitney. Agility and versatility: Mariah. Retaining tonal quality throughout the range as well mastery of range: TIE. The fact is, Mariah still had stronger lower notes and used this area of her voice far more than Whitney. Technique =/= connected range. Yes, having a good connected range requires great technique but that is NOT the be all end all of technique. No, Mariah had the slightly superior technique. Even though everything above D6 was disconnected whistle, it requires amazing technique to access and control the whistle register. In terms of resonance, for a light lyric soprano, Mariah had fantastic resonance. Of course Whitney had great resonance coupled with greater power but it was not unusual since she clearly had the bigger, spinto-like voice in the first place.

Whitney was definitely stronger in middle register, she was born soprano drammatico, Time magazine about her: if her voice was an instrument, hers is a stradivari. Mariah Carey is coloratura soprano, but usually coloratura soprano has 2 octaves, the highest female register. Mariah got 5 octaves, out of this world. Btw both gave us wonderful performances and incredible songs. I love 'em both

If there were also the whistle register, the falsetto, the agility, the vocal skills in general, the versatility and so on, Mariah wins by miles. These aren't the best notes for Mariah, the F#5 in Vanishing in the debut era for example, everyone knows that Mariah in the debut era still had to perfect the technique. With all the perfect F # 5s Mariah has they chose just that lol 3:43, 3:46, 8:16 but Whitney's strains a lot more. 08:04 her voice is shrill and unpleasant, Mariah's voice never gets like this in upperbelts, even her most strained moments are better than this.

Yer again I think Whitneys headvoice shines in the Mezzo range and Mariah begins to soar when she's up in that Soprano range at which point Whitney is kinda just producing a squeal. There's a reason Mariah took the top harmony in when you believe with the Bb5 because she's a Soprano. Overall yes Whitney arguably has a "prettier" headvoice, but Mariah's voice is no doubt fuller and more rounded in the upper range and again Whitneys headvoice is full in the lower.

There's a reason Mariah took the top harmony in when you believe with the Bb5 because she's a Soprano. - considered the fact that - her voice deteriorated since 94, gradually deepened and 'darkened'. She's a Mezzo since 91. if you notice, she could hit up a Bb5 effortlessly anytime she wanted to back in her primedays83-93. When you believe was in 98 where she hardly hit any notes beyond G#5 in both live or studio. So yea, Bb5 is pretty 'normal' for a normal mezzo like celine or beyonce.

Idk for me it’s always gonna be Whitney. Ppl can say that Mariah had the superior technique however I believe that they were pretty tied in that area. They both produced and supported resonant mid and upper belts up to G#5 and portrayed great head voice technique. Mariah has the whistle register and great agility as well. Whitney is no slouch being that she is a spinto and agility is uncharacteristic of her voice type. They were both equally great however they have both had bad days. They’ve both strained and sang unsupported notes. You can hear at 7:27 where Mariah strains her F#5 during vanishing. These women are the greatest vocalists of all time, and we shouldn’t compare such greatness!
