You did your studies, sir, the Valdivia's earthquake (9.5º) was in 1,960 and was the strongest ever registered. Only a 0,1º of difference with the alaskan one (9.4º). Both were pretty strong! Over here we get a programme called Alaskan Railroad which is basically a documentary series, it doesn't give you any indication that you can drive through the Whittier Tunnel, I was amazed. In the UK if you go anywhere near an active rail tunnel you can end up being arrested!!! Thank you so much for your work on these videos, it's most appreciated.

You might be interested to know that the tunnel has only been open to autos since 2000. Prior to that, to get to Whittier, you would load the family in the car and drive up on a flatbed railroad car. I worked on a passenger train in that area but not a ARR train although our train was pulled by ARR engines. We took cruise ship passengers from Whittier all the way up to Denali Park every weekend and every other Wednesday and Monday. Only in the summer time, May through September. If it was possible, the cruise ships would sail all the way into Anchorage but they cannot because of the shallow water of the Turnagin Arm of the Cook Inlet. That is why the passenger train is needed in Whittier. And there is no rail loop in the rail yard because it is so small so before the train gets to the tunnel, it has to go in backwards after using the rail spur near Portage. That way the train in pointed north when it leaves the cruise ship dock because it is a deep water port.

That was a very interesting video, but it raises some questions. Perhaps you can do a video and answer them. 1. You say it was 7° F., okay, so how come we can't see your breath on camera? Come to think of it, I couldn't see your breath when you were walking out in -42° either. 2. There was no loss of signal to the radios in the tunnel. The business radio had good coverage, and the broadcast radio never missed a beat (unless it was a CD or something). 3. What is the average temperature inside that tunnel? It is cold or warm? Also, how do they maintain the air quality inside there? Finally, better hope you're not inside that tunnel when there's another 9.2 earthquake! I hope I gave you some ideas for more videos with my questions.....:)
