An old Hobo who lived in my hometown had a steam locomotive sitting beside his business my whole life. That loco is now owned by the Alaska Railroad. If you happen to see ol' 557 say a prayer for Monte Holm, local legend and rider of the rails.

One thing I love the most about Shoestring is I can be sitting in my garage in Austin and and zone out watching his videos. Next thing I know I’m not even in Austin, me and Shoestring are sitting in the Woodline off a rail junction and he’s telling me all sorts of stuff I never knew and showing me things I never seen. Then the video ends and I’m on to my next trip. Be safe and stay warm Shoestring!

My wife and i were there around 2010. That tunnel had times of day the traffic would switch directions, so if you missed your time you had to sit and wait about 1/2 hr or so. Cool place as we took a all day ferry ride out to see the sites. Those bald eagle nests and birds were huge to see. Liked the colors on the engines, they were always busy up there on the rails. Everyone should see Alaska in person as you will never forget it, utterly speechless when you see it. God knows how to make a beautiful land.

Hi Mark. Thanks for posting this. Whittier is fascinating. I find it amazing the AK railroad bored such a long hard rock tunnel just to reach it and is still using the port today. Just a little too dark, cold and - above all - snowy in winter for my liking. I couldn't handle all three at the same time for more than a couple weeks. Get rid of the snow, and I could deal with the dark and cold.

Have you ever gone panning for gold during the summertime? Nuggets wash into the creeks and settle under rocks and into crevices under the water. Putting a GoPro into a waterproof case, and probing around these places by submerging the camera on the end of a very secure selfie stick, could allow you to spot the big ones fairly easily, especially in the areas where the water rises during storms but runs shallow and slow the rest of the time.

An old trucker taught me a trick over 50 years ago on how to safely walk on ice that I still use till this day. Instead of wearing spikes and cleats, he would screw a few 1/4" hex head screws into the bottom of each boot using a 1/4 inch nut driver. I've been doing this for decades and never slipped.
