I havel used curly willow which seems SOFTER than basswood. We had to cut the tree limbs an i am delighted that it is lightweight AND SOFT.

Good to know. So far I've mostly used goat willow and European aspen, which are decent too.

How do you sharpen your whittling knives so effectively?

I just use a normal kitchen knife sharpener. However, it would be good to get some honing equipment at some point too.
