Good for you. As for the wrist pain, it’s ok to take little breaks every so often. I remember my wrist being like that at first
@DIYAtoZ6 жыл бұрын
@@KevinCoates98 Thanks kevin. Now will take break after every half hour. Well when I start whittling I didn't realize the time and just do whittling. I'm beginner so jave to work for 4-5 hour on one piece.

Thanks. I use white pine pretty much all the time. Usually I buy 3/4” pine boards and laminate them to whatever size I need. Last week I managed to get a 6ft x 12” pine board that was a little over 1” thick. Now I have lots of material for my carving videos
@roosterscreations6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that Kevin, your pine must be different to ours here in Scotland as ours are full of big knots :( looking forward to your next...cheers

Kevin, I saw you talking about the fish knife. I’m trying to use a roughing knife with a point. When I wear gloves, they seem to get in the way and I can’t feel the wood as good. When I pull them off, I knick my finger with the point of the blade. Maybe a cut down fillet could work for me too. Just curious. What brand are you using? I really like the shape of the handle. Old Hickory doesn’t have the same shape , at least what I can find. And the fillet knives that do are stainless not high carbon steel.
@KevinCoates986 жыл бұрын
Bruce I cut myself so many times when I was learning to carve. Pretty much everyday. I was just careless and didn’t wear any protection. I have two fish knives. The longer blade one I think is a Green River. Not quite sure on the name. The shorter blade one that I mostly use now I haven’t a clue on the name. This knife is 40 odd yrs old. The Green River boning knife I think is available on Amazon.
@brucelindsey73626 жыл бұрын
Kevin Coates Thanks Kevin. I’ll have a look at the Green River. Looks like that you just cut them down to 2.5 to 3 inches. I’m just guessing of course. I appreciate your patience and response.

Do you ever have any problem with your peices splitting I carved a little guy the other day had a crack end up right down the center on his backside, you can guess how I managed to salvage it but seems like just about every piece I carve ends up splitting.

You have some killer skills. It would be great if you would talk a little and explain what your doing. Getting closer on the fine details might help too.. I don't know if anything would let me produce a carving like that. I just don't see how you wind up with that carving using the knife you use. One minute its ripping through wood like crazy and the next your cutting in details that I can't replicate with a detail knife.
@KevinCoates986 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. As for me talking and trying to explain what I’m doin with words wouldn’t help anyone. I’m not big on talking. Last year someone asked me if I would put a video on KZbin of myself carving. There were people interested in what I did so I kept doing the videos. If someone gets some benefit from this that’s fine with me. It takes little effort from me because I’m carving everyday anyway. With regards to the knives I use what’s available to me. I don’t do everything by the book. I taught myself this way using what tools was available to me. I try to do as much as I can with the fish knife and use the flexcut for the detail. I can probably grind the tip of the fish knife to a point and do it all with it. Maybe one day. In my opinion carving is like anything else. Just keep practicing and you will get better.
