Who invented the telephone? How about the airplane? The lightbulb? If you paid attention in high school history class, you’ll probably know the standard answers: Alexander Graham Bell, The Wright Brothers, and Thomas Edison. But if you’ve been watching our channels long enough, you’ll also know that when it comes to the big inventions that have most shaped our modern world, things are never so simple. And the story of the invention of the lightbulb is no different. While perhaps the most famous creation attributed to inventor extraordinaire Thomas Edison, the incandescent light bulb was actually in development for nearly a century before Edison finally perfected it and brought it to the masses. This is the story of the dozens of inventors who struggled to harness the power of electricity to banish the darkness of night and bring about a technological and social revolution.

One issue with traditional light bulbs is that is easy to make them long lasting by making them inefficient. So it made perfect sense to limit life span places like living rooms there they are easy to replace like in an living room. In places like traffic light or train signal lights using less efficient but longer lasting light makes sense. Also places like indicator lights in dashboards. Who was one of the fist places LED was used. And as good LED lights is today, its just +10 time more energy efficient and much longer lasting, its saves on the power bill who is nice it don't change the world.

Fun fact : In 1891, Hammerfest was the very first town in Northern Europe to have electricity. It lasted for one hour, and then the electricity cables froze. It took a year to insulate all the cables before the lights could be turned back on again. So Hammerfest is a pioneering town with long experience of supplying energy. Energihuset, a modern energy science centre housed in a hydropower plant dating from 1946, demonstrates that the Hammerfest area is also quite literally an energetic centre for advancement of the energy supply in the far north of Norway.

For electric distribution Edison lost to Westinghouse. Edisons ideas was totally hopeless, it needed extremely thick copper conductors. Westinghouse used AC and transformers. Initially the problem was motors, they required DC, but it got fixed.
@jamesslick4790

Edison likely thought multiple power plants (Made by Edison of course!) would be more profitable than fewer, but larger plants. George Westinghouse had experience in Natural gas distribution where high pressure was used for distance and low pressure at the user end. When Westinghouse got into electricity, He could see where AC was obviously more efficient an would be the way to go. Westinghouse is not only an underrated inventive genius, but also a good dude all around. He is not as famous as Edison because he let the ACTUAL inventors that worked for him patent under THEIR OWN names. Edison's name is on patents for shit his EMPLOYEES actually invented, Giving him the fame. Edison was Steve Jobs! George Westinghouse was the REAL DEAL. A man worthy of more fame and study!

There was more to the standardization of the light bulb by the cartel than just their bottom line. It also was to stop bulb manufacturers from claiming long life bulbs but putting out unusable illumination like that bulb in the fire station. (seriously, that thing is so dim it's no wonder lasts forever). It actually helped the consumer also since they didn't have to try to figure out brightness, efficiency, and life for every single manufacturer.

Fun fact: 2 Canadian inventors, Henry Woodward and Matthew Evans, successfully produced and patented an electric filament lamp in 1874. However, they couldn’t find enough funding from investors, which called it a “useless invention” and eventually decided to sell their patents to Tomas Edison in 1879, for about $5000 USD, worth about $100,000 USD today. Edison then developed an improved product, and was able to market it accordingly due to his funds. (Edit: I just watched the video and he mentioned everything I mentioned! Lots of scientific/technical advancements weren't created whole cloth by the known inventor, they had key improvements and better circumstances for it. For example, there was moveable type in China and Korea before Gutenberg, but Gutenberg used different metal for it and had a different press design, plus a couple dozen characters in European languages is easier to work with than thousands in Asian languages.

16:16 The longevity of that bulb came completely becasue it was never turned off. Incandescent bulbs almost without exception break when they're switched on. Because a cold tungsten wire has low resistance there's a high inrush current when switching on, which may even be worsened when this happens when the voltage is at its highest.

The cartel story whilst true is mostly innacurate. Bulb life is inversely proportional to efficiency... if you want light that puts out x lumens for y watts it will last for z hours, all else being equal... you can move any of x y and z up but the combination of the other 2 will go down. The co conspiritors just all agreed that a more efficient, brighter light was preferable to a longer lasting one... it actually even helped consumers because the reduction in electricity usage generally exceeds the price of a bulb. If you burn 5c less electricity a day from a more efficient bulb, it only has to last about 30 days to pay for itself (assuming a bulb costs $1.50 which was on the high end for the 30 seconds i spent googling).
@lorensims4846
@lorensims4846 8 ай бұрын
Of course, at the same time, Nikola Tesla had already perfected his fluorescing globes and tubes. There's a photo of Mark Twain holding one of the globes. Edison's "community power," using direct current, would have required a power station every few blocks and was clearly impractical. Tesla had licensed his patents for the AC motor to George Westinghouse who envisioned using the motors as generators of alternating current electricity which could be easily distributed across the country. Realizing Tesla's dream, he built the hydroelectric generating plant at Niagara Falls. This is what powered all those Edison bulbs in New York. But, no, Nikola Tesla wasn't big on self-promotion. He only wanted enough money to continue his work. Oh, they say the Underwood typewriter company went out of business because nobody was replacing their typewriters. They still work well.

I am disappointed with Simon here for brushing over the Phoebus Cartel. The detail everyone casually omits about that the lightbulb in New York is that it’s extremely dull. Reducing lifespan had the side effect of increasing brightness, and the fact that is rarely mentioned in any discussion of this issue. As with any cartel, there is ample evidence the group’s primary objective was to protect profits, but it is not as simple as they all just agreed to make a thing worse. They agreed making brighter, shorter lifespan bulbs would be better for their industry and bottom lines. It’s debatable if this truly qualifies as planned obsolescence since reducing lifespan had positives associated with it, but it doesn’t change the fact that the goal was to force all parties involved to agree to the option that worked our best for them.

I am not a fan of Edison. He was only interested in making money. Tesla was a greater inventor than Edison (think AC Current delivery rather than DC, look it up) but was not interested in making money from his inventions, which was not good for Tesla. Having stated this, while inventing something is great it is also less than useless if that invention could not be used in any practical sense. Edison took the idea of the lightbulb and made it a product that people could use and there is the difference. Practicality.

Thomas Edison was an American business man who leveraged the knowledge and work of others, claiming it as his own. His feud with former employee Nikola Tesla, who was able to invent an electrical distribution system that was cost effective, that showed Edison's true colors. The genius of Tesla's system was it lowered transmission losses through voltage transformation and provided a method of changing the electrical power to mechanical power with more efficient motor design. Telsa claimed to have the entire notional system running in his imagination before approaching George Westinghouse with the idea. Telsa had negotiated what appeared be a genius contract too, which would have paid him a dollar for each horsepower of rating as compensation from Westinghouse. When he was made aware that he would bankrupt Westinghouse with the deal, he voluntarily gave up his earnings. He eventually died New York, a pauper who owed a very large sum a money to his landlord in rent.

This is a popular narrative, but has very little basis in reality. We've partially covered this in our Tesla video, but we have one on Edison coming up as well. A lot of this narative has been spurred by the supposed feud between Tesla and Edison which never was. Again, go see our Tesla video. :-) We'll have much more on Edison specifically soon. :-) But suffice it to say, Tesla himself greatly admired Edison's work, just thought he was insanely inefficient and lacked technical expertise which would have made his achievements greater and faster. One of Tesla's examples was essentially if there was a needle in a haystack, Edison would meticulously sort threw every straw to find it instead of finding it in more sensible ways. :-)

His bulb lasted for 1 month of continuous use but probably 3 months normal..so you'd need 4 per year?

Switching on and off causes significant wear. This is because when a light bulb turns on or off, there is a huge temperature change. Think about what happens when you put ice into a bath of room temperature water: it cracks. This is due to rapid warming. That temperature change is very very very small compared to what a light bulb filament goes through. A big part of the reason LEDs last so much longer is that they heat up (and cool down) much less. This also explains why the longest running light bulb has been able to run so long: they never turn it off and on again.

Edison pushed DC current as Tesla, the Genius he was, saw the inherent superiority if Alternating Current like we use today. Tesla want free electricity for all, Edison wanted to be rich. Like friends Firestone and Ford.

Edison didn't actually invent very much. He was more a businessman who bought other people's ideas, then patented them as his own. I think we have laws against that now.

The planned obsolescence comment isn't necessarily 100% correct or true, 1000 our life on the bulb is because the brighter it burns the faster it breaks but the less electricity required to make it Glow so it's cheaper and electricity than it is to get new bulbs.

You have that the wrong way around. Filament bulbs require (in civilized countries) 240v to work properly. I don't think there's a person alive who would consider 240v safe (even 110v 'murica! isn't safe). LEDs on the other hand, only requires about 2v. Yes two volts. You're not even going to feel that! The reason they work in 240v sockets is because of the electronics inside. The actual LED element only needs 2v. I think you need to brush up on your electrical knowledge before commenting again.
