Damien Gayle, a Guardian environment correspondent, follows a group of climate activists as they try to paralyse the UK's fossil fuel distribution network.

We film with him as the protesters break into oil terminals, glue themselves to the road, climb onboard oil tankers and let down their tyres. The campaign, called Just Stop Oil, argues the UK has three years to slash its carbon emissions. They have been met with arrests, injunctions and condemnation from politicians - with the government using the Queen’s speech to announce curbs on disruptive protests. But with deep-pocketed supporters, and claims they are signing new volunteers every day, they are vowing to continue

If you have done your research and there is no viable alternative, you've done your due diligence. The next step would be for the legislation to allow if not invite companies that can supply an alternative into your local market. Better still would be to incentivize such businesses to open or create facilities locally, which will not only provide the alternative but also provide sustainable local jobs.
@Carlium
@Carlium Жыл бұрын
@@bryansmith1404 It depends on location and demands. You can't just create a ton of businesses in an area with little to no demand. There's also distance to think about, if you have a specialized store on every corner, it won't be worth it, since not everyone will be buying something special all the time, and there's logistics businesses, creating outposts or offices closer together will reduce the area each has to cover, thus increasing the efficiency, but who are they serving, and does the demand live up to what they deliver? It costs to start up a new business or outpost, and if the demand isn't there, then it's not worth it to create more of those businesses or outposts simply because it's not profitable. Please give an example of a "viable alternative" next time, instead of just stating a statement with nothing to back it up, thanks.

This just goes to show how important it is to improve education. If people can't understand the ramifications of such actions. They are not properly educated. Just that one tanker has the potential to increase petrol prices substantially for an entire suburbian region. Coupled together with interest rate rises, you have a recipe for disaster. Not even going to bother going into electric vehicles.
@johnbrennan7175
@johnbrennan7175 Жыл бұрын
It all comes down to cost. The general public can't afford to spend thousands on electric vehicles etc. Plastics are a byproduct of oil. What is the alternatives? @ocean6462

@@johnbrennan7175 this year or next is when electric cars will reach parity in cost with their gas counterparts for new vehicles so that won't be the case much longer. And that is their goal, to cause fuel shortages at gas stations and general disruption to make people listen and demand more climate action from the government. But yes I agree it's about cost. So the government should raise the carbon fee and dividend if they actually want to reduce oil consumption. This would put money from the tax back into people's pockets. Or they could phase in the mandates for zero emission vehicles more quickly. You're saying they're uneducated but their cause is real, and important, and disruption is their goal

Mate a single tanker is not effecting the oil prices that is total nonsense and vastly oversimplifies not just how markets work but specifically oil. A tanker is a literal drop in the ocean its like saying blocking a single truck of tomatoes will increase tomato prices across that region. It wont its not effecting the actual price but instead the ability to transport (on a tiny and brief scale/timeline) and then just like they have been doing for petrol prices for decades will use literally anything as an excuse to charge more then resist lowering the price again until absolutely forced to do so. It isnt that the prices went up but instead greedy companies see a opening to increase profits. Anyone who tells you a single tanker is that important in the supply chain is lying!

Like it used to be 50 years ago. Also office jobs should all be remote, which cuts down greatly on use of gasoline. We saw during pandemic lockdowns how the air started being cleaner.

I am not talking from a view of knowledge in this area but it will take us a long time to just stop using oil. I understand that there are a lot of ramifications when oil is used. However, currently we just don’t have a suitable alternative. Sadly, when we do they are just too expensive. Money and time needs to be spend carrying out research to find suitable alternatives which will not take a long time to roll out and at an affordable cost. A lot of thing that we use on a daily basis need oil. If we just suddenly stop it it will impact the lives of billions all over the world. However I wish we did not have such a huge dependence on oil. It is sadly a necessary evil for the foreseeable time. Or am I totally wrong in thinking like this?

Unfortunately, I think you're right, but like that oil tanker driver in the video, these types of protest hit the working classes attempting to do their jobs. It's not having any impact on the families flying away to their holiday homes in Tuscany. It's been proven that the wealthiest use a disproportionately large percentage of all the carbon across the planet. I'd be more sympathetic if those people were the targets rather than ordinary people just trying to make a living. Whilst I also accept that unless there's radical changes, everybody is going to be negatively affected by a massive amount. And like most things, the poorest across the planet will be hit the hardest.

Why should the middle class give up the highest standard of living humanity has yet known? Especially when hydraulic fracturing means there are hundreds of years of oil and gas in the ground. Oil isn't an inherent characteristic of a human being being oppressed by bigoted jerks. Oil is ITSELF required to create the technology necessary to end its use, and to stop global warming. If it suddenly wasn't available the world would no longer have the luxury of excess resources to deploy on long term change, nor the will to do so.

where does the electricity come from to power these electric car (and if you say wind and solar my next question is how do you charge then on a windless evening?). And that’s before to start rapeing Africa of it cobalt to produce the batteries. How do you make hydrogen and store it (i’m know quite a bit about this and am in favour with the use of wind power. Problem is you’re still replying on the oil and gas companies in a different way)?
