We uploaded this episode earlier this week on Thursday, and due some technically difficulty, the second half of the podcast was out of sync. Thank you to all the listeners for having pointed out the glitch in the comments. This is a re-upload of that episode after having fixed the issue. Hope you enjoy our picks on "Who are the best Test captains in history?" - The production team.

Frank Worrell guys! There’s a trophy named after him and he was the first black captain of WI (Aus series 1960-61 with the tied test). Other than that, Imran Khan who just brought Pak players together and start winning series. Ian Chappell, Mark Taylor, not to mention Shane Warne (the guy who didn’t captain but should have)!

The captain Behram was thinking of was Brian Close. Recalled to the England team for a series against the West Indies in 1976, at the age of 45, he had to face Michael Holding, Wayne Daniel and Andy Roberts...without a helmet. He had made his test debut 27 years earlier in 1949. You should google pictures of him after the one particular innings where he batted for almost three hours. I would be surprised if a tougher man has ever played for England.

Even as a MSD fan, rating MSD above Virat in Test captaincy makes no sense to me...

Jarrod prefers on field calls and tactics for rating Captaincy, so it shouldn't surprise you to see Dhoni. He is one of the best tactician of the game. People rag on him for away losses and being defensive but he didn't have the bowling strength that Rohit and Kohli had that could take 20 wickets. He also didn't have the spin duo of Ash-Jaddu for most of India's home games, even then his run from 2008-2010 was really good. He was harshly blamed for the 2011 whitewashes in Eng and Aus but India's batting order was aging out and out of form. That tour caused Laxman and Dravid to retire. He had to lead a side that was in transition to play 4 consecutive SENA series.

Dhoni? Donnie literally left us 7th and got whitewashed twice away to England and Australia. That's nowhere close to the others

Stokes? For what? Man has captained 22 tests. I swear folks will jump on any bandwagon. England are 7th in the ICC test championship points table
@ayushsinha18139 ай бұрын
@@shaunakkulhalli I don't judge captains by win percentage, which is still high for Stokes. Think about it, how many teams with 3 spinners in their debut series, who are twitter picks come out relatively unscathed after 4 tests against Indian batting? Also, these are pretty much the same players who had won 1/17 tests before his captaincy, this is a remarkable improvement by any means. I wonder how you would rate Ranatunga as a test captain then.

What Jarrod says and the basis of his picks are straight up opposites. He keeps talking about how changing the slips and bowling changes is not captaincy, but then goes on and on about how his picks are good tactically or how Behram/Estelle's picks aren't that good tactically. Stay with one script mate.

I think A Cricketing View had the right idea about captaincy (touched upon by Jarrod at the very end as well). That it's very difficult to judge captaincy, for a multitude of reasons. Expanding upon (paraphrasing?) that point, I think this is because: (a) a lot of it happens off the field and in concert with the support staff (especially in modern cricket), (b) a lot of it is attitude-matching (i.e., a stick captain won't do well with a team composed of carrot people and vice versa), and (c) most of it is just making the obvious decisions and having the rub of the green. Does that make sense?

Kane Williamson is not rated as the best NZ test captain, good but not great. Fleming is miles ahead of him.
