It's interesting nobody even considered Raina in this list, he is one of the very few Indian fielders who can field anywhere on the ground and by far the best Indian fielder from 2005- 2014.Even Jonty Rhodes rated Raina as better fielder than ABD and Jadeja
@TheNeo3499 ай бұрын
Yuvraj as well, a live wire in the field. probably the best point fielder of his era and a gun arm who could get runouts from any place in the field.
@nooneknows199 ай бұрын
I think Jonty rated him highly cos Raina reminded him of himself. Scrappy and basically a dive first and think later attitude. Doesn’t mean he was a better fielder than others on the list.
@shrirams32429 ай бұрын
@@nooneknows19 i agree to that, but I can't agree to that Raina is not in the top 15 list of best fielders, also there is reason why Jonty Rhodes rated that particular aspect of raina highly, because you don't come across fielders like that in cricket considering the time he debuted

Also just wanted to mention I was there at Hagley Oval for the Jadeja catch that Behram is referring to. Neil Wagner was looking in better touch than most of our batters, and absolutely nailed a back-foot hook shot. The TV replay doesn't do it justice, because the camera hadn't caught up with the ball. Jadeja was halfway between the inner circle and the boundary, leaps half backwards and plucks it out of the air at the top of his jump, one handed. Even the home fans just stood up and applauded. Ian Smith said it's quite possibly the greatest catch in the history of the game.

For a nation traditionally pegged as a 'great fielding team' - I was a bit disappointed not to hear more Kiwis mentioned. Agree that McCullum was more effort than talent, but Chris Harris was an all-timer. Absolute sniper from cover/point. There's a great compilation of his runouts on a channel called Kiwi Seamers. Nathan Astle has a resume of screamers in the deep, and more recently, Guptill is probably the best we've had in the last 20 years. Phillips will probably go down as one of our best ever. Others I'd put ahead of Baz: Neesham, Henry, Southee.
@TheNeo3499 ай бұрын
Totally agree with Glenn Phillips, that guy is a superman in the field
@Si_fighter9 ай бұрын
I think Harris is our best ever. Absolute gun across the ground and deadly accurate. Also a really great fielder of own bowling with amazing reflexes. Pleased to see Flem get a shout out for good slippers. Had great anticipation. I'd also throw in a mention for Jacob Oram at gully.
@ConradMcBad9 ай бұрын
Yeah, Oram was surprisingly athletic for his size. He played as a goalkeeper in soccer, so carried those reflexes through to his gully and slip fielding. My memories of 90's cricket is littered with cries of "Catch it Harry!"

I'm late here but I saw Jim Foat play! I once saw him run out Alan Butcher with a direct hit from cover off the first ball of a 40 over match! A decent top five Gloucestershire fielders would include the aforementioned Symonds, Rhodes,as well as Foat, Ian Harvey and Alistair Hignell (an international Rugby full back). Surprised no mention for Derek Randall....

I don't agree with the thing of fielders as being very good at all positions because teams might not use some fielders in different positions, nor with hitting the stumps. Getting run outs depends on batters making mistakes but someone with the energy of Jonty saves more runs per game by planting doubts, covering ground and lifts the energy in his team. I'll go with Estelle.

I know Constantine got dismissed because there just isn't enough reporting about fielding in the games he played. But one of the things that came up was the value of fielders who viewed fielding as a skill worth perfecting, and CLR James was very adamant about how much Constantine worked at his fielding and really how he used his fielding to sell himself as a professional cricketer.

Would be interesting to look at how many of the picks are left handed and or ambidextrous … being ambidextrous obviously makes for a good fielder but somehow left handed tend to be better fielder … similarly left footed footballers tend to do better … 😇

Left handers are only better in the sense that there are less of them so they often get more run outs because batsmen can easily forget that the left is their dominant arm.
