Almost the third part of Russia’s territory is located in the Arctic zone. Let’s visit one of the northernmost and remote settlements of Russia - Khatanga, meet the local ethnic group of Dolgan people and learn about their life on Taimyr peninsula.

Северные люди очень добрые, дружные, искренние. На крайнем севере много разных национальностей и все живут дружно и мирно, уважают друг друга. Чтобы понять северян , надо погрузиться в эту атмосферу! Оно стоит того! Полярная ночь по несколько месяцев (зимой) , северное сияние , белые ночи (летом), комары летом, дикие ягоды , морозы до -40’С и -57’С, вечная мерзлота !!!! ❤ Спасибо за видео !

Similar environment & weather conditions in Nunavut (@ 70* latitude) in Canada’s Arctic, which is home to the Inuit who resemble the Dolgan people. The Inuit also have their own language and culture. Wikipedia has a very fascinating description of the circumpolar people and the Arctic people. The article states that the inhabitants of the Central and East Arctic have been there since 2500 BC . These Circumpolar (or Arctic) peoples of Russia, Greenland , Canadian Arctic, America ie Alaska are descendants of herding nomadic tribes. It is fascinating to read how similar the cultures are. The foods, the skilled needle & beading work on clothes, the heavy coats,fur trim on jackets and coats, all look like an Inuit made them. Recently there has been a Canadian company that purchase older railway box cars,that they shipped by boat to northern port towns. They insulate the boxcar and installed grow light panels inside,and put exterior solar panels with storage batteries on the outside. Then they planted seeds & created a Hydroponic garden where an assortment of vegetables are grown to sell to the local market of a remote region where access to reasonable priced produce has always been limited. It really is problem solving by thinking “outside the box”, but using a railway Boxcar! Brilliant solution! However during the solar night 3 months of darkness, electricity would need be to be used to keep the hydroponic garden alive!

Thousands of years ago during various Ice Ages, it was possible to simply walk across the ice between Asia and Alaska. Once they got to North America as Eskimos or Inuits, the migration to the south was quick and they became tribes of Indians or indigenous people. Meanwhile the Polynesians were sailing across the Pacific, hopping from island to island. They got as far as Easter Island, but beyond that South America was populated by people who had migrated from northern Asia earlier on.

Hi, you don't know the specifics of this area. The distance from Krasnoyarsk (the capital of this region) to Khatanga is about 2 thousand kilometers. No one will lay a railway for such a distance through the impassable taiga and tundra. Most of the way passes through the permafrost zone - it is a mixture of ice and soil, "active soil", which is constantly in motion - freezes and thaws. It is impossible to build paved roads or railways, because of the destruction you will have to build such roads anew every year. Even if such wagons are transported by cargo plane or by river, you will spend a lot of money on coal for their heating and electricity. In Russia, there is a state program of Northern delivery. Every summer from June to September on huge barges (at this time there is no ice on the rivers), coal, diesel fuel, gasoline, construction materials, food, clothing, household chemicals, medicines are transported along Siberian rivers to far territories like Khatanga. There is also an air service, but air delivery is much more expensive, mainly people, correspondence and the most necessary are transported. The Dolgans' organism has adapted to the harsh life in the process of evolution. They get vitamins from berries and plants growing in the tundra. They are also engaged in fishing, hunting, and reindeer breeding. In 3 short summer months, they manage to grow vegetables such as potatoes, cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. But in order for the vegetables to have time to ripen, seedlings are already being grown in January. I learned this information from my own life. I work for a company that deals with northern delivery and my best friend Dolgan by nationality, she told me a lot of stories from the life of her people.

In places where the rivers are big enough, they can also wait until the ice has frozen about two feet thick. Then the frozen rivers become highways you can drive on with semi tractor-trailer trucks. To help beat the Siege of Leningrad, a real railroad was built on the ice of Lake Ladoga to bring in supplies. Where it gets really cold like minus 80 Fahrenheit only a fool would try to build with concrete or brick or steel because of the expansion and contraction of building materials. The only thing that survives long-term is to build with wood, and even then it has to be on stilt posts that go deep below the frost line. So for example you can't hang clothes indoors to dry. That has to happen outdoors where they rapidly become stiff as boards and you have to wait for the moisture to evaporate from ice to vapor by sublimation. Below about minus 60 F you can toss lit matches into gasoline and nothing happens, because there are no gasoline vapors to ignite. Getting a fire started with a wood stove is very difficult, because the dead column of air in the chimney is so cold and heavy the smoke at first won't go up the chimney, so it wants to hover over the fire and snuff it out until you can get some vertical motion to the air in the chimney. In spring the large black caribou flies are very aggressive and will land on your skin to quickly take out a very painful bite of tissue. The best defense is a mesh mask covering your whole head like with a beekeeper, and being otherwise fully clothed all over. If you stand on a patch of ice that is lingering, the air will be cool enough these mega-biting flies won't come your way.@@firegirl24

It’s so interesting to watch your channel and visit parts of Russia I probably would not see if I visited, kind of how people visit the United States to see New York, Disneyland and Los Angeles. Very few visit to see the more remote parts of our country-and the remote areas are generally where you can find unique cultures. Although in big cities like New York, there are often ethnic neighborhoods within the city. Even smaller cities can be like that: I’m from Pittsburgh, a medium-sized city that is kind of where the Midwest begins. With the city, there are some ethnic neighborhoods: Squirrel Hill is Jewish, Polish Hill is, well, Polish, Lawrenceville is Italian, and Highland Park is Irish.
