Wilma Rudolph deserves a top 5 spot. Overcame childhood polio to not only walk but run faster than ANY woman in the world. First Olympic team while in high school and Olympic relay bronze. Three time Olympic gold her next trip less than 2 years out of high school, childbirth AND STILL destroyed those Australian sprinters who were the standard for 3 decades. Retired on top of her game at a time women in sports and Black women in sports was barely a thing. Also won her gold medals in Rome on a sprained ankle. All respect toEvelyn, Gail, Wyomia and FloJo, but until the 1980s Wilma WAS the American women’s sprinting standard.

100% Correct. Im going to put out a true top 10 ranking soon and Wilma is definitely on my list. The fact that she overcame so much to become the Olympic gold triple gold medalist in 1960, and from what I remember, went home and was initially not even properly celebrated in her hometown because she was Black. Wilma is undoubtedly one of the GOATS of track and field. Not just sprinting, or in the USA, all of track. True Trailblazer for the sport💯

I'm sure it was all a coincidence that Flo-Jo decided to suddenly retire in her prime @29 in Feb '89 just a few months after winning 3 OLY Golds & 1 Silver when random out-of-competition testing was introduced into the sport beginning July '89 as a result of the Ben Johnson '88 doping scandal when she easily could have gone on for another 4yrs to '91 WC & '92 OLY 🙄 Young US female sprint talent I'm keeping an eye on over the next couple of yrs; Jacious Sears, Tamari Davis, JaMeesia Ford, Shawnti Jackson, Kaila Jackson & Kaylyn Brown in the quarter. Evelyn Ashford with her trailblazing 10.76 & 10.79 WRs is arguably the greatest US W100m Sprinter esp when you consider the number of doped athletes she competed against both at home & from the Soviet Bloc during that era! She was unfortunately prevented from competing @'80 OLY due to the Boycott, won 100m Gold @'84 OLY & would've won 100m Gold instead of Silver @'88 OLY if it wasn't for 'Mrs Sudden Retirement' & could walk anyone down in the 4x1 :) Also, the newly introduced WC were still every 4yrs during that era. @AllInTheGame01 you are misinformed at best, Flojo didn't retire in her prime she was old and had been a Pro for nearly the full decade of the 80s, 29 was ancient in track back then, she had not been making any money running but was going to cash in as an Olympic Gold medalist on multiple endorsements and start her family, makes perfect sense to me, considering she knew how hard it was to get into that form and her stock would only fall If she failed to continue to run extremely fast as she was only getting older.

Evelyn was essentially ahead of her time and to this day, I still am not sure if she is appreciated in the way that she should be. She made every possible Olympic 100m team from 1976-1992. That was unheard of back in those times until Merlene Ottey came around in 1980 (4 years after Evelyn was already competing in the 1976 100m final!). And 10.76 in 1984 means that she would have medaled at every World/Olympic games in history AND there is only 1 race in history where that would have not been top 3 (Monaco DL 2022). Again I dont think people realize how crazy her performances and CONSISTENCY for being in the 70s and 80s.

Ok, so I’m gonna need yall to be a little older! First, we have to give FloJo her Flowers no matter what, because not only was running sub 10.7 like nothing for her, but most importantly, her absolute GROUN-BREAKING mechanics and overall execution alone was so beyond anything we have ever seen back then that most males and females today are still taking bits and pieces from it today, while no one has fully figured out how to put together her full execution. Regardless of the controversy, I think her form settles the dispute! But, ummm, folks…Evelyn fuqqin Ashford!!! I mean…not only did she have an about 16 year career, twice world record holder in the 100M, but she also was extremely dominate in the 200M as well! Whenever she lined up in the 100M or the 200M, she won! None of the huge East German Dopers could ever hang with her in either of these two events…Evelyn and Wilma Rudolph were like Elaine is today, although they were much better than Elaine because they constantly dominated every race…not just championships. Marion Jones is also pur huge champion and I’m pissed she got busted with that little tiny bit of illegal substance, that wasn’t even illegal when she took it anyhow (and it didn’t speed her up…it slowed her down, if anything). Marion was dominant like that since a small child and her shine was blocked thanks to a shady staff doing her dirty. The Jet is my girl…I nearly died when she had to retire, but her thing is she ran too tense. She had the talent of Elaine, if not better, but she never relaxed. Had she been able to relax, I think she would have easily run my 10.6’s or even faster. Shacarri is simply one with the potential. She not yet at her height, but we just have to watch for her over the next few years. We cannot really put her anywhere just yet. Evelyn is overall the best American…there really is no true competition for her for those of we who truly know her talent!

I think that, in order to fundamentally have these goat conversations in a meaningful way, you are going to have to ultimately decide/define whether records and fast times are weighted more heavily than the quantity of titles and world-stage medals or vice versa. You also have to decide what weight to give the 200 alongside the 100. Gail Devers, for instance, never broke 10.82 and has no resume in the 200 but has a good load of medals.

I've never understood why we celebrate Carl Lewis and we throw shade at Flo-Jo. All serious track fans know the 80s was worst decade in the history of the sport because the USSR and the US decided to compete over who had the best PEDs. This is the historical context for Flo-Jo's groundbreaking achievement and even though she never failed a test and Carl Lewis did, she is the one who gets tainted by the era. Personally, I don't care about the record books. I simply love great sports stories and the more dramatic, the better. Flo-Jo has a powerful and moving story. Her memory is far more exciting and dramatic than all the achievments of Shelly-Anne Fraser-Price or Elaine Thompson. For me, Flo-Jo is the GOAT of all female sprinters.

I think you're mistaking the Soviet Union with the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The USSR was one of the first countries (if not, the first country) to implement AAS's into elite sports, and continued to do so, but the GDR went above and beyond to where athletes were forced to take higher and higher dosages to compete properly. I 100% agree though with the general hypocrisy surrounding how we treat certain athletes compared to other despite being from an era where doping was by virtually all accounts, a systemic effort supported by governmental powers.

Flo Jo didn't have the longevity especially in the 100m. With Evelyn Ashford to run 10.7 in the early 1980's was magnificent. I feel, the 1983 world 100m title was Evelyn title to win but she pulled up in the final injured. At least she made up for that disappointment, she went on to win her first title the following year in 1984 Olympics. I knew Jeter was fast when I first saw her run in her heats at the 2007 world championship in Osaka. I saw the potential in Jeter as a 18 year old kid. Before watching the video: I'd probably pick Marion Jones. She's joint 5th fastest all-time with Shericka Jackson & Sha'Carri, if we're only looking at US she's joint 2nd fastest all-time with Sha'Carri & only 0.04 behind Flo-Jo's "actual" American Record. 1997 World Champion in the 100m, 1999 World Champion in the 100m, 2000 Olympic Gold medalist. While doping is bad, shouldn't be encouraged & likely isn't safe for the athletes I fairly strongly believe that pretty much everyone at the top is doping, so I'm not going to discount her win, she destroyed that field. Evelyn Ashford I have 2nd. She has a 1984 gold & a 1988 silver. I'd put her above Jeter & Sha'Carri even though her individual medals are the same as Sha'Carri's & 1 less than Jeter. I do feel like 10.7x in her time would be 10.6x now (similarly Flo-Jo with today's technology likely could actually beat Elaine Thompson's 10.54 & may actually get close to a 10.49 wind legal), & her silver was a more impressive silver in 1988 as she was behind Flo-Jo, similar to Tyson Gay getting a silver behind Bolt's 9.58, where it's a silver, but it'd beat basically anyone, except you're racing in the same time as the fastest ever. If Sha'Carri or Jeter or even Marion Jones were in that race they'd be getting a silver instead of a gold. While Flo-Jo is probably the best sprinter (48.xx 4x400 split, 21.34 200m, 100m American Record) if we're solely looking at 100m, I actually don't have her at number 1. Caveat, I don't consider the 10.49 legit, I've read enough articles about it & it seems there is a 95%+ chance that it's wind aided, so imo her actual PB is 10.61, 10.61 would be the WR until Elaine Thompson's 10.54 in 2021, 10.61 still the American Record, & 10.62 is still her Olympic Record. I put her 3rd. I'd have Jeter in 4th, 10.64 PB, so very similar to Flo-Jo, Marion Jones & Sha'Carri's PB, 2011 gold, 2012 silver, 2013 bronze. Sha'Carri is on pace to surpass Jeter, similar PB 10.65, she has a 2023 gold, 2024 silver, so she's a medal behind Jeter, however she's young so I do think she'll pass her on the list at some point, as soon as this year if she gets better than a Bronze. So for now she's 5th. 6th I have Tori Bowie, she has a 2016 silver, 2017 gold, 2015 bronze. So medals she's tied with Jeter, so she is ahead of Sha'Carri, however 10.78 isn't close enough to 10.65 to put her ahead. Sha'Carri has multiple runs under 10.78. 7th I have Torri Edwards, also a 10.78 PB, slightly more impressive as it's a decade earlier. 1 individual gold in the 100m in 2003, so lacking the consistency to get individual medals more than once to be higher on the list. Edit: Now that I've watched some of the video I for sure have to add Gail Devers onto the list. I knew she did very well int he 100m, but I was incorrectly under the impression that she was more-so a hurdler. She hasn't run sub-10.80 while everyone else on the list did, so I kind of discounted her, however 10.82 is quite close & she does have 1992, 1993 & 1996 gold. It's hard for me to place her because 10.61~10.65 from the top 5 is just much faster, but 3 golds & back to back Olympic golds is crazy. I'd for sure put her above Tori & Torri, so they would move to 7th & 8th. I wouldn't put her above Flo-Jo, so she's somewhere in 4th~6th alongside Jeter & Sha'Carri. I'll tentatively say 6th because I'm someone who strongly believe times matter. If she ran against Flo-Jo or Ashford or basically any of the top 5 I don't think she gets 3 golds, those maybe become 1 gold, 2 silvers, or 3 silvers if any of those individuals were in her era. To me a 10.65 PB, 2 medals, even if only 1 gold beats a 10.82 PB triple gold (where it would be less golds if running against a 10.6x~10.7x runner). Now she'd likely be sub-10.8, even sub-10.75 with today's technology, but that's still a full tenth of a second behind Sha'Carri. Edit 2: Wow, I didn't know Jeter also had Bronze in 2007 & 2009. I don't think this is enough to put her in 3rd, but it more solidifies her 4th place. I think Sha'Carri needs another gold to pass this, a silver in 2025 wouldn't be enough, she'd need either another gold or multiple silver/bronzes. I see Sha'Carri does have the World Junior & NCAA records so I feel that more solidifies her 5th place, but she'll need a bit more to surpass Jeter. Edit 3: Apparently Elaine Thompson has the Olympic Record now at 10.61, forgot about that, so Flo-Jo doesn't have the OR anymore, I still have her in 3rd though as this chart is just US 100m sprinters. Edit 4: Lol, so many edits. I hadn't heard of Wyomia Tyus before. I'll tentatively put her 7th. Pushing Tori & Torri to 8th/9th. Double gold is certainly amazing, however I do roughly attempt to estimate how impressive times are relative to the era. To me if 10.8 was broken in the 80s by Evelyn (or was that late 70s?), then in the late 60s breaking 11.00 or even 10.89~10.95 sounds possible to me. As a random throwaway guess I'd say 10.65 today = 10.75 in the 80s = 10.89~10.95 in the 60s, so imo at 11.08, she's maybe equivalent to mid~high 10.7s today. So that combined with double gold puts her just above more recent 10.7x athlete's who have medals, but only have 1 gold. She could very well be near Devers times if she ran in her era, however Evers has a gold at WC as well so I'd put her ahead. The top 5 are simply too fast time wise, Wyomia would need a 10.9x imo in the 60s to be roughly equivalent to 10.6x runners today to be in the conversation for top 5. Men did break 10 in the 60s, & breaking 10 for men is slightly higher caliber than breaking 11.00 for women (I believe it's closer to 10.00/10.90 being roughly equal) so this leads me to believe a similar caliber woman would be sub-11.00, closer to 10.90. Edit 5...: For current women imo don't sleep on Jacious Sears. It suuuucks that she got injured, but she ran 10.76. I'm not sure much about her recovery, but if she's recovering well she has a bright future. She has ran faster than some of the women on this list. Maybe McKenzie Long as well, she's ran 10.82, however I think she'll more-so be a force to be reckoned with in the 200m. Edit 6: I hadn't thought of Lauryn Williams, maybe I'll throw in her 10th to have a top 10 list. She was in elite form like 2002 at Juniors up to 4x100 2012 Olympics & I do think longevity matters, however compared to the other 9 she doesn't have the times (10.88 base is a fairly recent era).

Evelyn is the GOAT hands down. Florence had one questionable good season.

Flo-Jo is Fastest all-time, nothing more. After Shelly-Ann and Elaine I don’t even know why we went way back to Evelyn. We have had faster and more competitive finals and two double champions. There is not even a close comparison. 🤷🏽♂️

No. Evelyn Ashford is. Longest sustained career of greatness in sprinting. 1976 - 1988. FloJo was a drug cheat. I know people don't want to hear that, but it is very evident and I remember seeing the radical improvement not just in her times, but in her physique and it all happened between 1987 and 1988.

@mssha1980 America wants to be the best in everything. If Jamaicans were juicing, America would be the first to expose Jamaica because they wanted to be the powerhouse , everyone was suspicious, of Flo Jo , which athlete would be at the top of their prime in sports then retire in such a short time without illness ? mind you she came back to athletics in 1987 shoot to the top 1988 and retire after her world record win , 1988 was when Ben Johnson get caught and people keep saying there were more people doing the ish , funny enough Ben was the only one get caught but am not one to judge.

Flo-Jo lacks the longevity to be considered the greatest.
