I am from a lifelong Democratic, Jewish New York family, although I've lived in Berkeley for decades. I always voted Democrat. But I just voted for Trump. I am aghast at today's Democratic Party, which looks down on average Americans and uses fear to try to scare people of color to vote for them. Why else have I left the Democratic Party? It's just not enough nor even enlightening to simply ask these people why the support Trump. They give some boilerplate, my FIRST follow-up is, "tell me about your parents politics growing up and maybe also now if it's changed." Then "tell me about your childhood." Pretty quick you start figuring out a few things that make these black folks a little different than most.
