No, the economy will not fail, at least not for this reason. But these workers have to be replaced by Americans who will want to be paid the normal wages - which is not much, but way more than the immigrant get paid. Consequently the prices are going up, which has a direct impact on your wallet. You will feel that in a short amount of time. Of course our public - uneducated as it is - does not know these connections, and therefore has no choice but believe whatever it is told. This public has no chance, because it cannot distinguish a lie from the truth. It cannot ask critical questions. ...and then it runs into the trap. Congrats, you did it. Good luck.

It did collapse the economy in the south. They have not recovered to this day. Look at Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, etc... The only exception so far is Texas, but that is because of migrant labor. Enough said!!!

I live in western Oregon, where there are many strawberry fields. Doing the 1970s and earlier, middle school and high school kids picked strawberries alongside migrant workers. By the time my son's generation came along, in the 1980s and 90s, kids were no longer willing to do those jobs. It's back-breaking work, in muddy fields filled with slimy slugs, and the farmers pay per quantity picked, rather than by the hour. Migrant workers and immigrants have the skills to pick quickly without damaging the plants, and can actually make a semi decent amount of money each day. They also have the stamina to work for 12 or more hours s day. For labor intensive jobs like that, farmers can't afford to pay unskilled American workers by the hour, enough for them to earn a living wage Farmers would rather go broke, or have to raise their prices dramatically.. I'm a vegetarian, so I try to eat s lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, but I'm already paying $6 or more for a pound of strawberries, and I'll have to quit buying them if the price goes up much more. That's just an example of over crop. The issue isn't just that the wages would have to be raised to get American workers. Americans as a whole doctor want to do that kind of difficult physical work, that kills your back and arms, most of us just aren't in good enough physical shape to do that kind of work.

I love Richard Wolff on a lot of other issues. I disagree with the Left on this issue because of Richard's example of Jose, the undocumented immigrant who has no legal access to federal benefits and labor law protections. Jose is the scapegoat to access low to free labor so they still pay other legal citizens bare minimum wages. If Jose was here Legally, he could have access to the protections, benefits and join a union to collectively demand more from the employer. I want that for Jose and his family, which is why I believe in legal immigration. The left talks out of both sides of their mouth on this issues.

To be clear he's not advocating for no path to legal immigration. He is describing objective reality, one that the agriculture industry has been fairly open about for decades. It's why the nativist movements in California were quietly pulled back. The elephant in the room between those two realities is that the situation these people are fleeing is so bad that an undocumented status is preferable. Not destroying ourselves to round them up and eject them from the country is literally the least we can do. Creating paths through temporary worker programs or citizenship is the ethical thing we can do.

When they did this in Florida because the Floridians were saying they're taking American jobs. So The governor made it a law that anyone hiring them would be charged with a felony so they left the state. The Farmers tried to replace them with American workers and guess what happened they quit by lunch time. The crops in the fields weren't being tended to construction wasn't being done. They were begging them to come back and they turned against the governor.

Gladly! He didn't say that wages would not be affected in those industries. He said that the entire country benefits from the cost suppression in the critical industries of food and housing. The demand for these things is largely inelastic, which means a shortage will cause prices to rise in a non-linear fashion, which will destroy the poorest Americans. The effects of labor lower cost is the ability to deliver at lower cost for food- not just for American pocketbooks, but for our over all competitiveness in global food production (in which our unique geography and low population density allow us a globally-rare ability for expansion) This larger industry which employs many many people in higher, more desirable jobs, including dock and processing work. I'll add that the jobs that illegal immigrants hold in construction (and food processing) are those that typically are only taken by ex cons, because they are brutal, i.e. drywalling roofing. Most illegals are not in farming. I lived in CA for 40 years and visited many areas with humanitarian agencies. Most live in or within 50 mile radius of cities, collecting benefits. We can issue temporary work visas to farmers with clean criminal record as done in techs and healthcare. There are many starving citizens who would love to work at lower paying jobs. CA allegedly have illegals in farming but we pay one of the highest grocery bills in USA. Explain that to me.

You are right on that. They generally work for sub contractors in construction and lawn services. I once had the idea that I wanted to try laying sod. Figured it's not a high skill job and I enjoy tetris. Unless you are not a citizen you will never get a job laying sod. You might run a crew but they will never hire you for grunt work. All the major contractors in my state use this labor. RYAN construction is the most known.

I thought a refugee was a person that was oppressed or abused escaping from another country. These people are being paid and bused to come here. There's no way it's cheaper to flood one country with all the people from all other countries in the world and think it's less expensive to keep them. It would be cheaper to work with government in other countries to fix their problem. We can't pay for all the housing, jobs, health insurance, food etc. that goes along with millions and millions of new people, especially when our own people need help. As a foreigner trained in America living in my own country happily, I do not buy any extremes, but I can understand rhetoric and strategy. The US has an extremely dangerous situation at its border. Narcotrafic, gangs, terrorism menace, weaponry traffic, violent people, but also normal people escaping from violence hoping for a better life. Many of the immigrants already in the US might be pivotal, some a burden, and many of the upcoming too. Without border control, the US is not a sovereign country, so it is a matter of national security to impose law and order. If done smartly, the deportation should be jerarquized to leave at last the illegal community that works hard and is in need for the USA. It will be intelligent to concede them rights to live, work, health, maybe not citizenship, etc., all based on reciprocity cost/benefit. My point is that US deportation to succeed has to be rational, scalable, and predictable. I hope it will be so, to the best for the honest illegal immigrants families that work hard and for the benefit of the USA.
