That's how I got here too -and in the meditation that first mentions Douglas Harding, and introduces this concept, I had a very very fleeting moment, less than a split second, of feeling that I had no head and it was more than enough for me to want - and need - to know more!

I've been obsessed with this teaching lately. But it's like a spiral, where I reach a peak of staying with the headless awareness and then sort of burn out on it and return to the identification with the body and thought for a while, and then come back at it fresh.

Not to start a fight but, I do not simply "disappear". At center, I am "something" other than or beyond what is seen or not seen. When I no longer "see" an object called "me", at the center, I still FEELING like a "something" I will call 'me" or my self. At the center, there is a "void" yet it's not a Void.... not a dead, empty, lifeless, invisible "no thing". I experience this Void as a full, indescribable, essence or living space. I'm not dead in here! I'm alive & yet quite impossible to describe in this moment. This is my current experience based on what this video proclaims. Everything that apparently exists is IN ME yet it's not a Nothing or NO Thing.

Been waiting patiently since I got the first email that it was coming. LOVE IT! Great graphics too. My occasional termite is “ok, I get this, also have real-time experience with the conceptual understanding of it but, as many of my teachers have said, the difficulty is in being the actor in the play and being the open awareness too. Pain is real even if it’s not happening “to anyone.” (No self) Sadness, war, poverty, animal slaughterhouses, pedophiles, murderers, rape, destroying the planet etc. What of that? This mind cannot reconcile that by being headless or by being pure awareness etc. Wtf is god doing?
@headexchange3 жыл бұрын
Well, in your terms, if you are God, then you must ask yourself, since you are the Author. I suggest that God wanted 'others'. Others to talk to, others to love. The presence of others, real others, involves 'free will'. 'We' are not puppets of God. The consequence is that people are free to do evil as well as good. it is a very high price to pay for a universe, for the presence of real 'others'. But as I say, in the last resort, you being the Author are responsible. It is up to you to decide if the price is too high. No 'free' others, then no universe...
@youarewhatyourelookingfor44963 жыл бұрын
@@headexchange thank you. That’s a reasonable answer. As the author in my own little universe within the universe, I do my very human best to bring no harm to any living beings. Human selfishness continues to impede the efforts , yet “failure” is always just the solution wrapped in unpleasant experience. Blessings ❤️

@@headexchange I don’t understand what you mean here. When I do the experiment, pointing inwards, there is just now, THIS !….the observer, observing itself, as it were ! It’s like the universe, Mother Nature is inside me, looking out ! Yet, there are no thoughts of horror or past or future. Have I misunderstood something and gone into denial ?

Thank you for the animation. I found you on Sam Harris's app and gone through your instructions there. I've done the pointing experiment so many different times. I understand it conceptually. There's just consciousness and feelings, images, sights, sounds appear in it. However I just can't experience that centreless, headless state of being. It always feels like there is something "here" receiving, processing and experiencing the world. Any advice?
@headexchange3 жыл бұрын
You don't see your head, instead you see the world. That's the non-verbal experience. Sometimes it doesn't 'feel' like anything, but it's still true. The idea of 'something here' is itself arising in the Space.
@CL-he4jz3 жыл бұрын
i know what you mean i think! so wide wide open blown-apart space is here atop my shoulders (wayyy to the sides of visual field) ... and THAT is the "thing here" that is receiving & processing & collapsing itself into the perception of a hard little head?!
@Pamela-nr2oj3 жыл бұрын
Regarding the feeling you have that there is something "here" receiving - if you investigate those 'feelings', you will see that they are just sensations that like everything else is arising in awareness. No different from all the other images, sights, sounds and body sensations you experience. Shinzen Young's meditation techniques were very helpful for me to clearly investigate sensations after which I was more easily able to experience what Richard is pointing to here. Rupert Spira conversation on Stillness Speaks also helpful.

This _would be_ totally wonderful, _except_ the one salient point _(which Douglas Harding equally seems to have sidestepped)_ that the transition at 0:10 fundamentally changes the meaning of "distance" and "center" both of which were previously defined by the body and now become ill-defined. It suddenly turns into a descent into the micro-levels _of the body_ _(and at which place of that body would that be, please ?)_ and ignores the fact that there is no reason to assume that this would be identical to the approach to the witnessing subject.
