Who Buys Mitchell Guitars?

I've played several at my local Guitar Center. I was surprised at how well they felt and played. Maybe they were set up in store. I bought a Mitchell bass in the box. After setting up, it was fine. I kept it and sold my Squier P bass.

As a beginner, I bought a Mitchell. I did not know it was made by guitar center. And yes the price is why I bought it. I'm happy with it and I don't play often.

Just bought a mitchell today and didn't even know it was guitar centers brand. I bought it because it sounded the best in my price range. Super happy with it.

I has a MS470, impulse bought it for $199 new. It's a solid budget piece.

some are great with their pickups you have to file the burs off the fret ends and the head stocks are ugly but the gutiar itself is pretty good for the money. If you are trying to save money I'd go with that or a good used guitar there. I would like to see guitar center making signature guitars for famous youtube gutiarists etc. to colaborate and make designs to suit what the artist has in mind with the design etc. including a better head stock design

Great video and I agree about the set up as my Jackson JS22 came set up perfectly on factory spec which is very mid for taste right from the box that guitar center got from Fender and was $200 to me... So I just don't get how any big name brand can't set up a guitar out of the box.... And really cool my jets on getting anything but a a Jackson or a husk/kit guitar like if I have to set it up I might as well make me the whole guitar.

Guitar Center has techs at their warehouse to to do minor setup work for house brand guitars... I've seen the job ads on their site. This probably within the last year or two.

I got a mitchell md200 once for under 100. black. would have kept it, but the thing had back bow only an archer could love. there was no fixing that back bow. so i gave it away. i would be willing to give the MD 200 another chance. I just bought a hd 400 i always wanted in green, and thought I was getting a great deal for under 200 in great condition .. till fedEx pulled some BS and nocked two chips out of the back, and a dent leading to the chip on the lower bottom. I decided to keep the axe. I am sure it will be a great player once i set it up, but it's like this brand and me are not meant to gel.

I bought one of Mitchell's super short scale guitars, hoping to get something to play while traveling. It didn't work, but I think the guitar itself is pretty good.

I agree that learning to do your own setup is always a good thing. The only problem is that to do it properly means leveling frets and crowning them. These days, concave crowing files have made it so that anyone with no skill can crown a fret beautifully. However, to do a setup well requires the investment of several hundred dollars in tools. Great if you are going to do multiple guitars for yourself or your friends, but hardly worth it if you are going to do one or two guitars. Schecter also does brilliant setups on their $700 guitars - made in Korea and final setup at their factory in California.

You're undeniably correct. It's dumpy and has an uncanny valley resemblance to a guitar, like AI art or something. I applaud them for trying something different from everyone else though.

@@onlyusernameleft2 The best copy made is strat copies, but the SG copies are the worst. Like even ESP's Viper looks weird. Not sure why, but all SG clones never look right.

Did not realize Michael Kelly was Sam Ash. Love my MK Patriot Decree. Plays great. Overwound pickups put out lot of sweet sound. 2 coil taps add to the variety. My number 1 right now.

It took me a while to appreciate the look, but I now have 4 Michael Kelly Patriots, and they are absolutely fantastic guitars. I also have a Michael Kelly 53DB (tele style) and it is killer, too. I don't think you can do much better for the money. I've also purchased 7 new Gibsons and 1 new Heritage this year, and I still find myself reaching for a Michael Kelly more often. Yep.

For the money I would get one of the EART offerings that give way more guitar for the money like stainless steel frets, bone nut, roasted maple necks, etc.

Any guitar purchased from any box store like guitar center should be set up from the jump. You should never have to pay for a setup from a brick and mortar retailer in person. Online stores could get a pass, since a set up can be compromised when shipping.

I agree. I think they're missing out on sales because of bad setups. That includes fret sprout - I bought a used Gibson Les Paul Tribute for $600 (a while ago) - it sat on the sales floor for months with a few sharp fret ends. I fixed them in about 3 minutes.

Last year, GC kept having sales for $149 to $199, and I never had ANY extra money during those sales. Nowadays they're selling for $399 (except one color) and I won't pay THAT for one, but next time I see a purple one for 150-200 I'm pulling the trigger. I'm a lifelong pro and own several very expensive guitars, but I think Mitchells play terrific and I can set them up myself. I do that with all my guitars anyway!

I have a Mitchell LP model; probably my favorite guitar. Feels great, sounds great, and go it at a good price. I have other guitars in the same price range, but imo Mitchell quality is above those.

I have the MS400 too, one of the first run models. I've had it a while and it is absolutely on par with my LTD EC256. Actually, the finish work on the Mitchell is better than my EC256. My EC has a gap between the body binding and the neck on the low E side as well as a few other tiny blemishes. The Mitchell is flawless. I think the Mitchell MS400 one of the best budget guitars ever made. Quite a few people that have played mine have made some pretty decent offers trying to buy it, but I'm not selling. Maybe I just lucked up and got a really exceptional one, but regardless, it isn't going anywhere.

No guitar company should ever partner with GC they kill them all. I had a Laguna guitar which was soooo well engineered and had more modern features than Fender. GC never promoted them. I liked the Mitchell strat but they killed it….by they I mean GC.

They have a proper rep for being junk guitars. People don’t even use them as modding platforms.

I got a REALLY nice MS470 used (and setup fantastically!) for $160. Plays great. Thinking about sticking some Gibson pickups in it.

Dude, if you're going to hang your shingle as a 'budget guitarist', don't EVER wear a fender shirt, because they're the kings of rip-off, and every guitar player that knows how to make a bar chord knows it. Most less expensive guitars need some attention, so don't crucify Mitchell for that reason. I saw you missed the most important points about the brand.
