I love how you included this. It’s not in mainland China culture but is recognized worldwide. I also love how you find these authentic generational people keeping traditions alive. This channel is so awesome 👏

I'm going to disagree with the fortune cookies recognised worldwide thing. They're literally unheard of in South East Asia. I've heard of them because I'm very attuned to American pop culture. But regardless it's a good video .

I love this man's heart. He really cares about what he does and his cookies and it shows. Actually, a lot of the people Goldthread find to interview have really beautiful hearts

Fortune cookies are a vital part of Chinese-American culinary history and culture. And, I hope Mr. Chan's handmade fortune cookie factory perseveres and preserves that history and tradition.

Whoa, what an unexpected twist! I didn't expect fortune cookies to have their origins in Japan at all, I just assumed it was an American-Chinese invention my whole life

China introduced martial arts to Japan, Japanese man invents fortune cookies in America. Americans read fortune cookies at Chinese restaurants. Full circle.

@chisaomusician7752 Actually, fortune cookies were invented in Japan. They were then brought over to America by Japanese people who owned Chinese restaurants located in the US. The fortune cookie the US is familiar with is just a modified version of the fortune cookie invented in Japan.

@@HirokiMatsuoka-yl8eg I learned that after I wrote this comment. It's ok because "Black, White, Asian, and Hispanic" are the only breed in America. Fry Bread with fortune cookies are the next big thing.

I use to visit San Francisco Chinatown once or twice a year with my family and extended family. Now we go to Lake Tahoe or Reno. It costs too much for hotels in San Francisco and your car will get broken into. Just a weekend there for the family cost more than a month's worth of bills and mortgage here in Sacramento.

Picture of the wrong San Francisco earthquake in this video. That picture was from 1906, well before the first Chinese-made fortune cookie.

Cookie and a dumpling? I can see the parallels of the folding with the cookies and dumplings. But, in my opinion, it’s more similar to a cookie and a cracker.

I can't believe an ABC has an accent that's not even Californian. I'm so confused. Ps. I grew up in SF, that's not a SF accent, because there isn't one.

It all depends on where you grow up in the US. I didn't grew up in a Chinese centric community like China Town. Even though I'm not an ABC, I barely have any accent at all. I spend most if not all of my childhood in a mixed community where the main language that's being spoken is English. If you grew up in China Town, you'll go to school where the majority of the students are Chinese. It'll be a lot harder to drop the Chinese English accent when everyone around you have the same accent.

Okay Bobby Moss. I’m not doubting your bona fides but I’m going to say there definitely is a San Francisco accent, depending on what part of San Francisco. It’s really a San Francisco Latino accent or even Bay Area Latino with some spillover to people like me who grew up in that environment. I grew up in the Mission and I’ve heard that accent in places outside of California and know immediately these are my people and I’m always right. I was in Cairo one time and heard it and went up to the guy. Didn’t take a minute before we found acquaintances in common. It’s getting pretty rare now. I’m 52 and don’t hear it around town much. I don’t really have it unless I’m hanging out with all old school Mission guys who do. Also, my wife is from the Bronx. Definitely an accent with her family. I love it. They commented on my California accent when they met me. I didn’t think that was a thing, it 3 generations in CA have an impact I guess.
