I think Corelli sounded much better with the fast vibrato but he got so much flack for it they said he sounded like a goat that it sounded wobbly and unstable he ended up changing to a slower vibrato with an even lower larynx in the later recordings after 1958 resulting in a darker more scooping sound which I don't really prefer. Even though his vibrato was faster his voice sounded brighter and much more effortless before he made the changes.

@@chezbe Nope, that is because you don't understand operatic voices. No, offence meant to you, opera is not exactly the best known genre and it is really difficult to tell the size of the voice from recordings. Corelli's voice was 5 times as large as Kaufman's voice, and 3 times the size of Pavarotti's voice. You might wonder why that would matter. It is because opera singers have to sing without a microphone. You have to be heard. Corelli had some of the biggest and loudest high notes of all tenors in living memory. He had a real dramatic voice. His recording is just a very low quality, that only captures the squillo in his voice, and not his full voice. Squillo makes your voice ring and project in a large space, it is the bright pining sound, and it gives a tenor a bright sound, to balance out the dark sound. A tenor should have squillo, Kaufman doesn't have squillo, his voice is more on the smaller side and does not project that well. Pavarotti obviously had squillo but nowhere not nearly as much as Corelli. Pavarotti was a great tenor but a different type of tenor. I wasn't familiar with Corelli's performance and it blew me away. His voice is powerful and sweeping and yet also majestic and agile. Having said that, Pavarotti's expression and intensity gives me goosebumps every single time. He truly and completely embodies the most profound essence of the emotion conveyed by the music and lyrics, for a moment you can catch a glimpse of unmitigated and almost blinding triumph in his eyes which I am just transfixed by.

The pitch battle with Opera has always been a thing.

I saw both Corelli and Pavarotti live…two different voices. Corelli has the edge. Bigger sound, more heroic sound. One of the more beautiful Nessun Dorrmas was sung by Bjoerling, but he could not have sung it on stage.

Corelli's voice is more flying, sonorous, even on the old recording he sings much more loudly than Pavarotti and Kaufmann. Kaufmann sings in a mask, he is very tense and you can see it on his face. This can be traced in Pavarotti. Corelli sings correctly, his face is relaxed, and his voice fits the aria. Old school is better

The funny part is that Corelli initially trained as a Baritone, no less. I'm not even kidding. And later as a Spinto tenor he became legendary not only for the sheer power and beauty of his voice in general, but specifically for his tremendous high notes. Let that sink in, a natural Baritone. Pavarotti, of course! I mean, his version of Nessun Dorma will forever remain in our hearts for the sheer passion he brings to the aria as he does with every aria. But I must make a point of highlighting an attribute Corelli has that nobody else, including Pavarotti, seems to have for this one. Notice how effortless his movements are. He reaches that note (it’s a high B, yes?) almost without seeming to move his body. It floats from him effortlessly, seamlessly… It seems as though he could reach that note as easily as any other, like it’s nothing! Unfortunately, this effortlessness doesn’t have the visual impact of Pavarotti, regardless of his beautiful sound, but there’s no denying the incredible skills needed to produce such a vocal feat!
