In the eyes of the Western world, the Philippines was discovered on March 16, 1521. But is it really that simple? Let's learn more about this so-called "discovery" of what is now the Philippines!

It is amusing that History proclaimed it was discovered by Magellan... except it was already inhabited by a very advanced culture. Historians are finding uncovered treasures of a highly advanced Culture that was destroyed for it's Golden Riches. Filipinos wore gold in abundance. Some of the Gold stolen from the Philippines was shipped to places like Madrid and Italy to adorn Churches and Palaces... Our true Greatness is yet to be revealed. Keep up the good work:)

Magellan was perhaps the first to introduce the Philippines to the western world..but it was already inhabited by people for thousands of years before. The negritos, Malays, Chinese, Indians, Arabs, etc were already residing and/or trading in the islands. So no, Magellan was not the first to discover the islands, nor was he the first foreigner to ever set foot on the Philippines. We learned the wrong things in school before. I hope current history teachers correct this error.
@ProximaCentauri88

James The issue is funny and annoyingly dumb. Nothing is wrong with the sentence "Magellan discovered the Philippines." when it is true. He discovered us for the Europeans.
@footlooseunlimited8040
@footlooseunlimited8040 6 жыл бұрын
The very words "___ discovered the___" means the person was the very first person who found it, or invented it, like someone who discovered the vaccine. That is why I said he was the first to introduce it to the western world. But to say he was the first to discover it is not accurate, because many people were already in the country before he even set eyes on its shores. If he found an uninhabited island then yeah, he is the first one to discover it.

Exactly, that is why what you said that the title is annoyingly dumb, is annoyingly wrong. As everyone in the comments below say the same thing, that the Philippines was already inhabited before Europe found the islands, so Magellan was not the one who discovered it, but rather Magellan first introduce it to the western world. Unfortunately, this was not explained accurately in school when I was growing up.

In my opinion Magellan was killed by Spaniards. No doubt about the battle of Mactan and Magellan disappeared in Philippines. I know Magellan was wounded in the battle of Cananore in India at service of kingdom of Portugal. He was lame after that event. He was a good Captain but bad warrior. I was reading the history of that voyage and I know Magellan wasn't accepted as commander of fleet by Spaniards. He faced some motinityes on board. I don't believe what Antonio Pegafeta wrote.

Its all semantics. It would be more accurate to say that it was Magellan's crew that "made the presence of our islands known" to the western world. Of course, saying that "filipinos" inhabited the islands is also inaccurate. Filipino Nationalism would arise late in the spanish colonial period, and these islands were parts of different territories back then. We had the kingdom of Tondo, the various barangays of the visayas, and the sultanate of sulu.

Our history books should be rewritten. Honestly. I'm not sure if you are aware that history is no longer part of the high school curriculum in our country. I really hope that textbook writers, historians and cultural officers would initiate rewriting our history books (among other things that would strengthen our knowledge of "who we are" and what happened before) - this time, complete and correct. Thank you for putting all your clips together. It will bring clarity to many other Filipinos. :) All the best!

OK, a student of history. Good. I have a historical factoid for you that you apparently don't know, Kirby. Magellan's crew did not prove that the world was spherical, as you claimed. That was commonly known since before Christ. American novelist Washington Irving started the myth over a century ago that no one knew the world was a sphere until Columbus & Magellan.

For me, as long as Magellan did not know the existence of the Philippines before he made his landfall, then he has discovered it. He discovered it for Spain, but also for himself. I subscribe to the definition of discovery as "to become aware of the existence of something by way of the senses or through a mental process". Joseph Priestly discovered oxygen as a separate gas from "airs", but it has existed long before he discovered it.

I also agree, long time ago, that Magellan was not the first to discover Philippines. But I still wonder if before the Spanish colonization, are we already existing as ONE NATION or country? I mean, we do have kingdoms from our main islands but are they united as one? Do we already have a name for country before? Can we credit the Spaniards in uniting Luzon, Visayaz, and Mindanao as one nation? Help me answer these questions please. Salamat!

At 55, Magellan did completely circumnavigated the world. And the caveat is "not continuously." Note, he was accompanied by the Malayan slave Enrique when he sailed from Cadiz. Where did Magellan met Enrique, from the East Indies. So from the Spice Islands, Magellan went back to Iberia then sailed westward across the Atlantic and Pacific back to the East Indies.

Let say they may not discover the different kingdoms but they built the Philippines to become a one nation from different kingdoms. Spanish colonialism built this archipelagic state and we became Filipinos.

Efforts of the current generation to learn history should be appreciated, but their obtuse understanding of history is bothering. The Philippines was discovered by Ferdinand Magellan according to the Doctrine of Discovery by the Vatican under Pope Alexander VI for King Philip II and Queen Isabela of Spain. The concept of discovery under the doctrine is different to what we understand now, and to say Ferdinand Magellan did not discover the Philippines is plain false.

New Subscriber here! your channel is very informative & thank you for that, maybe you can make more informative videos BEFORE Spanish Colonization Period to proved that the so-called Philippines NOW is ALREADY A CIVILIZED NATION long before the European came.

If you are talking to fellow spaniards then you can ask them "Who discovered the Philippines?" it is a rightful question for the Spanish but not to the Filipinos, well you can just ask the filipinos who visited the island in 1521?

As you know Malaysia and Philippines are neighbors in the border Sabah-Palawan. Magellan arrived in Philippines on March 16th of 1521. As you know, Magellan was in conquest of Malacca- Malaysia in 1511 ( 10 years before to hit Philippines) . He got a slave in Malacca called Enrique of Malacca. This slave was baptized with name Enrique in honour to our Prince Henry (Henrique in Portuguese language). Enrique of Mallaca wasn't treated as slave because he was godson of the captain Magellan. This slave was protected by Magellan and traveled around the world with Magellan. I sad before, Malaysia and Philippines are neighbors. In seaport of Malacca arrived ships of all Asia. Maybe Magellan got informations about the existence of Philippines. Magellan discovered Philippines because the European only knew the Mediterranean sea. Than, it was a discover for the people of Europe. You can see the root of Magellan and he navigated in direction of Equator after cross the Strait of Magellan in the South of Argentina. Magellan died but he started the conversation of Country of 100 millions of inhabitants. A hug of a Portuguese.

Dictionary defines "Discover" as "to obtain sight or knowledge of for the first time." So technically the aborigines discovered the islands now known as the Philippines. There is a saying "history is written by the victor" so the Spaniards (the Western world) made the self-serving claim that islands were "discovered" by Magellan/Spain. History is always being re-visited and re-evaluated. The reasonable presentation of Magellan's landing is just to state the event as a historical fact without the embellishment that "Magellan is the discoverer of the Philippines."

Hello Kirby, first off, I wanna congratulate you for creating an interesting channel and for your great interest about our history. You are a brilliant guy. But i just wanna raise some issues about your interpretation of history. After all, history is really about interpreting the events of the past, based on empirical evidence and theories and drawing logical and reasonable conclusions thereat. I agree on many points of your topic. I am familiar about the Magellan Expedition and Perhaps, I, too, have thought of and considered Enrique as the first person who have circumnavigated the world. Now, it is very important to note, that we do not have ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY About this FACT because for thousands or even millennias of human civilization, the possibility of a human being or human beings who have circumnavigated the world is very very likely. But for purposes of historical (Empirical) discussion, we would have to settle that Enrique was, most likely, the first person who had circumnavigated the world, perhaps months earlier than the members of the spanish expedition, when they returned to their original port of call, Spain. On my main point, It is settled that, and indeed, Magellan was the guy who discovered the Philippines. But I would caution that the term that was used - DISCOVERED”, was is a political and legal term or concept, and Not strictly scientific, historical and even literary concepts. Let me explain where my view comes from; . More accurately, He, Magellan, by virtue of the King’s authority, CLAIMED/CREATED THE PHILIPPINES for Spain and through this ACT, he have announced (Constructive Notice) to the whole world, SPAIN’s UNEQUIVOCAL POLITICAL and LEGAL TITLE over our Islands. Now, it was technically an INVASION. But allow me to clarify that Invasion is not a negative term per se. All human civilizations rise and fall on INVASION. Even God commanded Abraham to invade the land of Judea which is presently, ISRAEL, from the early tribes who lived there. Which he did. So for me, it is a natural human behavior/activity to invade but subject to certain conditions. It is a necessary evil just like say hunting or burning a forest (Kaingin), subject to certain exceptions and limitations. So what I am saying is that; Yes, Magellan “discovered” the Philippines for Spain against the known world at that time. Technically, he delineated a piece of earth’s land and sea and De Jure claimed it for the Spanish Monarch against everyone in the world from that point onwards, in March 16, 1521. He named it LAS ISLAS FILIPINAS (the present day The PHILIPPINES). That is the History that is widely accepted back then, until now and into the future. Thank you very much for this chance Kirby and rest assured I really appreciate you doing this for us. Your comment or reply is very welcomed and appreciated. 🖐🏼😀😃

Badlongon, your scholarly thoughts on the matter is very much appreciated! It is sad that many, including the author, think that history can be easily rewritten for the sake of education, but false by all means. Note: A post above says Magellan did not name the archipelago "Las Islas Filipinas." Si Ruy López de Villalobos daw! Baka lang makita ng mga critik! Thanks! :)
